2015 - Out Of Our Inbox - Edition Four

Image
Buckle up boys and girls, things could get real loud and KABOOM!!!  Starting off this edition loud and proud, with The Unknown . When I saw Tim Myers name mentioned I was keen to hear this new album (released a couple of weeks back), as the last work with his involvement registered positive so this was a must hear. The promo had this to say - Get to know The Unknown, an impressive alternative band fronted by multi-instrumentalist and former One Republic member, Tim Myers. The Unknown is gearing up for the release of it’s debut album, Album One which effortlessly combines modern-alt swagger (Cage The Elephant, Black Keys) and 60s mod rock (Jimi Hendrix, The Who, The Doors).  The leading single “Are You Ready for Me” has already generated significant buzz and been featured on Showtime, MLB TV, Brooklyn 99, General Hospital and a host of other TV shows.  Additionally, the band’s song, “Come & Get It” has been showcase on commercials for the Windows Phone, Nissa...

Kraftwerk - Toccata Electronica 1995

Image
Reloaded 14/May/2015 One of my favourite 'unofficial' recordings by any artist. The various remixes are clearly very professional and also quite intriguing. The bands minimalist approach on their website and other searches I have made don't give much away about this recording. It is clear however that some mainstream music websites are unaware this was never officially released by the band.  ----------------------------------------------- Toccata Electronica is possibly the most stunning bootleg of Kraftwerk ever 'released'. Comprising of rare and different remixes of many well known Kraftwerk songs this bootleg first surfaced in 1995 as a CD with professional looking packaging and high quality audio. Different pressings including differing artwork and CD labels are in circulation however the front cover is usually the one shown opposite. On one CD version the band are called 'Kundendienst' and Kraftwerk are not mentioned on this CD at all. On anothe...

Renaissance - Academy Of Music 1974

Image
Reloaded 14/May/2015 - This has been requested for re-posting many times, however I do not know of any other file that has corrupted as much as part one of this recording, that said I am now hopeful that part one will work fine. One of my all time favorite (officially released) live albums has to be Renaissance Live At Carnegie Hall from 1976. Despite the emergence of punk and the associated back lash to the 'millionaire rock stars' and the music business excesses, somehow Renaissance seemed to sit outside of the fury. For me it was simply a band that were both astonishing musicians and writers rather than posers and pretentious, and their live performances reflected this. Annie Haslam's five octave range, and the balanced use of a live orchestra just added to the bands credibility' This is a recording originally broadcast live on WNEW from a concert at the Academy of Music, New York on the 17th May 1974. It makes a great companion to the subsequent Carnegie Hal...

Sandy Denny - London 1972

Image
Reloaded 13/May/2015 - I am delighted to be able to share this rare recording of Sandy Denny again, this is a treasure for all Sandy Denny fans.  This is a recording of Sandy Denny live at the Eltham Well Hall Open Theatre, London, back on May 5th, 1972. This was apparently an open air gig with folding chairs provided for the audience. The recording was made on a Radio Shack $20 cassette recorder with a built in condenser mic, and considering this, the sound quality is surprisingly listenable with clear vocals and instruments and very little 'noise or hiss'. The recording made it on to DAT and kept the quality as close to the original standard as possible. For fans of Sandy this really is a must have. Richard Thompson was also in the band.  Sandy Denny's second solo album, Sandy (with a cover photograph by David Bailey) was released in 1972 and for many remains her most cohesive musical statement as a singer and songwriter. 2015 - Out Of Our Inbox - Edition Three

Image
Edition three already , well there have been some real gems come our way and so to share them seems reasonable, would you not agree, anyway enough tripping over my own words and down to business or music if you prefer... Well if this round up is called 'Out Of Our Inbox' and a glance above confirms that it it, then  King of the Travellers  did not so much come out of it, more they leaped, charged and flew out, taking no prisoners, with the fantastic track 'Trenches'. An absolute powerhouse of a song, genre busting, energising and what's more there from Freemantle, Australia, so once again Australia is throwing up another great band for the world to discover. They have been described as follows - Having already established themselves as one of Fremantle’s most exciting up and coming bands, King of the Travellers are set to explode onto the national scene with the release of their upcoming single ‘Trenches’. A band that’s almost impossible to pin down to a single ...

Parliament - Funkadelic - Live in Detroit USA - 1978

Image
Reloaded 11/May/2015 - This feature first appeared on Beehive Candy back in March 2008, we were a young music blog, full of excitement that people were actually visiting us, sometimes as many as 25 in one week (yes a whole 25). To be honest we enjoyed being a part of the party back then, although I think we took ourselves a little to seriously! This remains a good recording of George Clinton & his many fine band members. Not sure if all the links still work, however this has been requested for re-uploading many times by passers by so the one that matters does! -----------------------------------------------------------  I first became aware of Parliament through the album 'Mothership Connection'. All things Funkadelic, George Clinton, and P Funk naturally would follow. To be honest at that time in the 1970's my personal music taste was dominated by rock and punk and the whole new wave thing here in the UK. However Parliament were one of those 'cross over...

Sly and The Family Stone - Fillmore East 1968

Image
Reloaded 10/May/2015 - This is   Sly and The Family Stone  The band formed in 1966, and by the time of these concerts in 1968, were highly regarded following their ground breaking hit 'Dance To The Music'. Active from 1966 to 1983, the band was pivotal in the development of soul, funk, and psychedelic music, they attracted a multi national following from Soul fans to Rock fans. Headed by Sly Stone, and containing several of his family members and friends, the band was the first major American rock (soul, funk, psychedelic...) band to have an integrated lineup in both race and gender. Oh, and the hair kinda grew longer and wider and taller after the release of 'dance to the music'. This then is Sly and The family Stone, still in the ascendancy, on the 5th October 1968, at the Fillmore East in New York City. The recordings are of both Early and Late show. Early Show: 1. Life 2. Color Me True 3. It Wont Be Long 4. Are You Ready 5. Dance To The Music - Musi...

Arcade Fire - I-Day Festival 2010.

Image
Reloaded 10/May/2015 - This is Arcade Fire in concert at the I-Day Festival in Bologna, Italy, back on the 2nd September 2010. The tour in support of the release of The Suburbs album was in my opinion their best yet and musically this is a very good example. However be warned, a rather annoying Italian DJ pops up on occasion practicing his skills (or inflating his ego even further) as this concert was broadcast live on FM and this recording sourced from that broadcast.   From wikipedia regarding recent events for the band - On January 13, 2011 it was announced that Arcade Fire would perform at the 53rd Grammy Awards in February 2011. The band was nominated for Grammy Awards in three categories: Album of the Year, Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, and Best Alternative Music Album (for The Suburbs). Out of the three nominations, they won the award for Album of the Year. At the 2011 BRIT Awards, "The Suburbs" won Best International Album, and Arcade Fire...

2015 - Out Of Our Inbox - Edition Two

Image
Welcome to our second new music round up for May 2015 and we begin with  Brontosaurus . The song 'Safe To Surface' came my way a few days back without very much other information. A quick listen to the song had me wanting to know more and thankfully this was followed up by more detail on the band. A quote from ' redeyeChicago ' makes my life easier they described the bands music as - "Combining disparate elements of folk, chamber pop, math rock and more, it’s difficult to pick up echoes of other acts, as the band’s music is wholly its own". Brontosaurus add more to the story -   “Wail, and we might wake the dead” warns drummer/guitarist/vocalist Nicholas Kelley midway through Brontosaurus' second album, Our Animal Ways, but with all the menacing organ, fuzz-heavy bass and ground-rumbling percussion that's carefully littered throughout the record's forty-some minutes, this is much more of a promise than a warning. Along with keyboardist/guitaris...

Emmylou Harris - Live In London - 1995

Image
Reloaded 08/May/2015 -   Emmylou Harris contributions to country-rock, the bluegrass revival, folk music, and the Americana movement are widely lauded. I am always pleased that I got to read a review of 'Elite Hotel' her second solo album, back in 1976 when it was first released. Not only did I love the album, it helped me discover the country rock genre of that time, and set high standards, that helped me avoid the more 'cheesy' country artists. She remains a firm favorite of mine. This concert was Emmylou Harris and The Daniel Lanois Band at the Shepherds Bush Empire, London, England on the November 23rd 1995. This is a republication of an Emmylou Harris concert we first featured in October 2007 and the download includes four tracks missing from the original feature, which therefore now makes this a full concert archive recording . Genre: Americana, country, country rock, alt country. Set: Full Set. Source: Soundboard and FM Stereo (BBC Radio Two). ...

Gillian Welch and David Rawlings - Nashville 1994

Image
Reloaded 08/May/2015 - This is the second live performance from Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings to be featured on Beehive Candy, because it's just a great selection of songs and a superb gig. The notes that came with it suggest that this is "one of the (and possibly the) earliest circulating Gillian Welch/David Rawlings live performances, sourced from a soundboard recording. Essential listening, including a range of pre-Revival material no longer played live, in much better quality than the San Francisco pub gig that forms part of  the Working On A Building set" . The concert took place at the Station Inn, Nashville, TN, back on May 19th 1994. Biography material by Jason Ankeny tells us that Gillian Welch first appeared on the folk scene as a young singer/songwriter armed with a voice and sensibility far beyond her years, earning widespread acclaim for her deft, evocative resurrection of the musical styles most commonly associated with rural Appalachia of ...

Pree - New Album - Rima

Image
This is an unashamed plug for Pree. Totally unashamed and I do not care!   I will add that Paper Garden Records who released Pree's latest album Rima earlier this week, seem to have a knack in finding great artists, Little Tybee and Eli Mardock to name just two others. So what's all this Beehive Candy being even more upbeat about a new recording than normal, bearing in mind we tend to write only about music we like anyway! Well cards on the table, I have loved Pree's music since the above mentioned record label first introduced them to me a few years back. As regards the new album here are the eloquent words that came my way a week or so ago -  Known for their unique and vibrant pop songs, Rima  was crafted after returning to DC following touring, and a time of reorientation and reexamination of relationships. The ten tracks of Rima  (which takes its name from geologic fissures on the Moon) are a series of confrontations--perceptions enhanced and at t...

Hawkwind - Live, Demos and Sessions

Image
This is Hawkwind  in three parts, concentrating on rarities from 1970 to 1980. It is also an introduction to another website that if you enjoy Hawkwind's music should know about ( perhaps you already do, but no harm in sharing the details ). One of the fascinating things about unofficial recordings is the various sources they come from and the levels of audio quality available. These three recordings kind of demonstrate this. The first one is clearly a home recording of BBC radio sessions and the music is joined by the wonders of 'radio' noise. That said, I reckon any self respecting Hawkwind fan may well have a copy of this somewhere, for the sake of completeness if nothing else. Don't get me wrong, it is quite listenable, it's just that there is a considerable amount of far better material around, more about later. Audio quality - Average, listenable Part One: BBC Radio One Sessions 1970-71 John Peel Intro Paranoia See It As You Really Are I Do It ...
