Johnny Cash - Live in Amsterdam 1972

Image
By the early 1970s, Johnny Cash had established his public image as 'The Man in Black' . He regularly performed dressed all in black, wearing a long black knee-length coat. This outfit stood in contrast to the costumes worn by most of the major country acts in his day, that is rhinestone suit and cowboy boots . In 1971, Cash wrote the song 'Man in Black' to help explain his dress code, "We're doing mighty fine I do suppose/In our streak of lightning cars and fancy clothes/But just so we're reminded of the ones who are held back/Up front there ought to be a man in black." He and his band had initially worn black shirts because that was the only matching color they had among their various outfits, and he claimed to like wearing black both on and off stage. From the 'Man in Black' era this is Johnny Cash live at The Nieuwe RAI, Amsterdam, Holland, on the 26th February 1972. Set list is: 1. I Walk the Line intro / A boy Named Sue. 2. Ramblin...

Emmylou Harris and the Hot Band - Washington DC 1976

Image
This is Emmylou Harris and the Hot Band at the opening night of the Warner Theater, Washington DC, USA on the 28th March 1976. 'Elite Hotel ', released in December 1975, established that the buzz created by the previous album 'Pieces of the Sky' was well-founded. Unusual for country albums at the time, which largely revolved around a hit single, Emmylou's' albums borrowed their approach from the album-oriented rock market, in terms of quality and artistic merit. Tracks like "Sin City" , "Wheels" , and "Till I Gain Control Again" , which weren't singles, easily stood against tracks like "Together Again", "Sweet Dreams" , and "One of These Days" , which were. While 'Elite Hotel ' was a number 1 country album, the album did sufficiently well with the rock audience. ' Elite Hotel ' won a Grammy in 1976 for Best Country Vocal Performance, Female . Legendary DC Concert Promoter Mike Sch...

Third World - Amsterdam 1979

Image
Third World are a Jamaican reggae band formed in 1973. Third World's greatest success came in the late 1970s and early 1980s, peaking with their cover version of The O'Jays 'Now That We Found Love' , a hit single on both sides of the Atlantic in 1979. Their music may be a little too commercial for some reggae purists, however as their website states 'the band was born out of a drive to write and perform original material incorporating reggae, rock and funk, and a desire to tour and take music to a wider audience'. From the peak of their success this is Third World live in Jaap Edenhal, Amsterdam, on the 9th June 1979. Set list is: 1.One cold vibe. 2.Rhythm of life. 3.Cold sweat. 4.Thirld World Man. 5.1865 (96 Degrees in the shade). 6.Cool meditation. 7.Now that we found love. 8.Talk to me. Sound quality is very good (from a FM stereo recording). DOWNLOAD LINK IS IN COMMENTS BELOW. For more on Third World check their website HERE . There are a few Cd's in ...

Uncle Tupelo - Beloit, WI, USA 1992

Image
Although Uncle Tupelo broke up before they achieved significant commercial success, as mentioned on the recent Wilco concert posting , the band are renowned for their impact on the alternative country music scene. The group's first album, No Depression , became a byword for the genre and was widely influential. Uncle Tupelo's sound was unlike popular country music of the time, drawing inspiration from styles as diverse as the hardcore punk of The Minutemen and the country instrumentation and harmony of the Carter Family and Hank Williams. Farrar and Tweedy lyrics frequently referenced Middle America and the working class of home town Belleville. What was very surprising, though, is that, unlike the band's previous country-meets-punk releases, 'No Depression' and 'Still Feel Gone' , the third album was performed almost exclusively on acoustic instruments. It's a testament to the group's courage and integrity that, in a time when Nirvana's '...

Girlschool - Cologne - Germany 1991

Image
When featuring the Go Go's recently, I came across the fact that Kathy Valentine had for a short while been a member of Girlschool . A small piece of trivia, that gives a tenuous link to sharing a Girlschool concert. The make you feel old fact, is that Girlschool have been around for thirty years, as of this year. This is only part of a concert from 1991, the band have released three official live albums, more details on their website's discography HERE . Performing at Music Hall, Cologne, Germany during December 1991, this is brimming with their usual live energy. The setlist for this recording is: 1. Uh, All Night 2. Screamin' Blue Murder 3. Demolition Boys 4. C'mon Let's Go 5. Emergency 6. Tush 7. Play With Fire This is from a stereo FM recording of very good quality. DOWNLOAD LINK IN COMMENTS BELOW. James - Live in London 1993

Image
James have just released the superb new album 'Hey Ma' , more about that in the next round up of all things new 'whats up doc'. This is James back in 1993. Part of the whole Factory records and 'Madchester' scene, by the early 1990's the band had achieved much deserved success, releasing some excellent albums and singles along the way. This concert was recorded by Radio One in the UK and was also syndicated to the Westwood One network in the US. Leonard Cohen - Gothenburg Sweden 1993

Image
This is Leonard Cohen from 1993 touring around the time of 'The Future' being released, (his last tour until now). Due to appear at Glastonbury this year and also touring from June 2008 in Canada and Europe, if you get a chance to see him live, take it! Having released three 'official' live albums, this is the first live material I have heard from 'The Future' era, and it is extremely good. The man remains a massive influence in music, and now in his seventies, is as eagerly anticipated, as at any other time in his forty year musical career. This was recorded from an FM broadcast of the concert at the Lisebergshallen, Gothenburg, Sweden, on the 2nd May 1993. The set list was: 01. [6:56.67] The Future 02. [5:00.68] Ain't No Cure for Love 03. [6:23.33] Bird on the Wire (radio announcer) 04. [6:44.43] First We Take Manhattan 05. [4:14.05] Suzanne 06. [5:47.54] I'm Your Man 07. [6:58.47] Joan of Arc 08. The Go-Go's - Live In LA 1984

Image
This is the Go-Go's in their 1980's hey day. They made rock history as the first all-woman band that both wrote their own songs and played their own instruments to top the Billboard album charts in the USA. Their energetic music spanned surf, new wave , pop-punk , power pop, and rock. Although Belinda Carlisle has had considerable success as a solo artist, the Go-Go's are very much on equal terms with each other, as is evidenced by this concert. I do not have the precise location or exact date for this gig, beyond LA, California in 1984. This is a superb and lively performance. Set list is: 01 Get Up and Go 02 Head Over Heels 03 Our Lips Are Sealed 04 Forget That Day 05 We Got The Beat 06 Turn To You 07 Tonight 08 You Thought 09 Yes Or No 10 I'm With You 11 This Town 12 Can't Stop The World 13 Vacation - I'm The Only One Band Line Up: Belinda Carlisle Jane Wiedlin Charlotte Caffey Kathy Valentine Gina Schock This is probably FM stereo rather than soundboard, ...

Nick Drake - Second Grace

Image
I do not intend to write about Nick Drake here, except to echo the common view held by so many, who have come across his music down the years, of 'what could have been' . His short life is well documented HERE , and I would only end up copy and pasting excerpts, so spend a few minutes at Wikipedia if you choose. His three studio albums remain firm favorites of mine, and fall into that very special 'timeless' category. The unofficial releases of Nick Drake tend to be demo's and home recordings, as is the case of 'Second Grace'. Bootlegs in circulation include 'Tamworth-In-Arden', 'Complete Home Recordings' and variations on that theme. Second Grace has appeared in at least three different forms, this version is originally from a 25 track CD circulated by 'Mirrorglass Music'. These are home recordings probably at Tamworth and possibly Hampstead, and cover all three album releases in part, along with some unreleased tracks...

Abba - Live Compilation

Image
This particular recording is circulated as 'Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This'. Probably better as a recording band, Abba none the less were highly successful on their tours, and with Anni-Frid and Agnetha fronting the performances, were not short of glamour! This live performance is as I understand, recorded from the 1981 concerts taped for the Dick Cavett Meets Abba TV special, in the USA. Some of the cuts are I think commercially available on Thank You For The Music and Abba Live, however for completeness I have included all of the boot here. Apart from that I do not have any other information on this particular bootleg. As a whole this is possibly better than the official releases, and some have said is the best Abba live album never made. Set list: 1. Voulez-Vous (4:44) 2. Knowing Me Knowing You (4:30) 3. Chiquitita (5:29) 4. Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) (5:06) 5. Super Trouper (4:31) 6. I Have A Dream (6:35) 7. The Name Of The Game/Eagle (...

INXS - Concert For Life - Sydney Australia 1992

Image
I was one of 72000 people who enjoyed INXS at Wembley Stadium, London, eight months prior to this concert. They were pretty cool in London, and still rocking, when they got back home to Australia at this event. The London concert was released officially, this boot really compliments that release. Their Sydney performance was broadcast locally on FM, however their final song of the show was not aired. A rare audience recording of the last song has been included here for completeness, and is a must for any INXS fan. This then is INXS performing at the Concert for Life, in Centennial Park, Sydney on the 28th March 1992. Set list: 01. Guns in the Sky 02. Send a Message 03. The Stairs 04. Mystify 05. Bitter Tears 06. Taste It 07. Need You Tonight 08. Mediate 09. Disappear 10. All Around 11. Suicide Blonde 12. What You Need 13. Kick 14. Never Tear Us Apart 15. Baby Don't Cry (Audience - partially remastered) With the exception of the final track this is a...

Whats Up Doc - Number Nine - April 2008

Image
A second helping of 'Whats Up Doc' this month, exclusively for The Puppini Sisters . OK I am a little late as their second album was released in February, and yes, they have received considerable attention in the UK media, however just in case you have missed them, here's an unashamed plug from the Beehive! The Puppini Sisters led the British retro wave in 2006 with their 1940’s-influenced blend of pop with swing, a gorgeous sense of glamour, and fun. Their debut record, Betcha Bottom Dollar , was the fastest selling jazz debut in Britain on its release, also debuting at number 2 on the US jazz charts and in the Top 10 of Billboard’s Heatseekers chart. In that vein, their second album The Rise & Fall Of Ruby Woo is a collection of highly original songs written by the trio, including “I Can’t Believe I’m Not A Millionaire” and “Jilted,” as well as extraordinary covers of tunes by artists ranging from Barry Manilow to BeyoncÈ. The Puppinis’ trademark watertight harmonie...

Elvis Costello and The Attractions - Live In The USA - 1978

Image
Declan Patrick MacManus aka Elvis Costello was one of a good number of energetic performers on the London 'pub' circuit in the mid 1970's. He was linked to the 'punk' scene and perhaps more fittingly to the development of 'new wave' music. This recording is from his first USA tour in 1978, with material from his 1977 debut (My Aim Is True), and his then forthcoming new album 'This Years Model'. The frenetic energy of Elvis Costello and The Attractions is recaptured in full on this recording. Performing live at The Warner Theater, Washington DC, USA on the 28th February 1978, the concert was broadcast on WHFS-FM. Set List is: 1.Pump it up. 2.Waiting for the end of the world. 3.No action. 4.Less than zero. 5.The beat. 6.(The angels wanna wear my) Red shoes. 7.(I don't want to go to) Chelsea. 8.Hand in hand. 9.Little triggers. 10.Radio radio. 11.You belong to me. 12.Lipstick vogue. 13.Watching the detectives. 14.Mystery dance. 15.Miracle man 16.Bl...

Wilco - Live In Seattle - 2002

Image
This is what the UK's Uncut Magazine had to say about Wilco in 2007. 'Sometime in the late 1980s, Jeff Tweedy and some friends from Belleville, Illinois, formed a band called Uncle Tupelo. They were pretty good, as it happens, but the impact they had was phenomenal. By fusing American roots music with the scrappy vigour of punk and grunge, Uncle Tupelo accidentally kicked off the entire alternative country scene. Quite an achievement. But that wasn’t good enough for Jeff Tweedy. In 1994, Uncle Tupelo split up, and Tweedy began a quest to stretch the parameters of what we could loosely call Americana - though he’d probably baulk at the term himself. Tweedy put together Wilco and, over the course of six studio albums, various elaborate and rewarding projects and multiple gifted line-ups, the band have become one of the most inventive and popular bands in America'. Praise indeed, and having listened to their music over the years, I tend to agree that Wilco are one high quali...

Franz Ferdinand - Live In Amsterdam 2006

Image
Franz Ferdinand seem to have survived the curse of the 'Mercury Music Prize' and a third album is due out later this year (October 08). The new album will apparently have an 'African' feel to it (they recently performed at the Africa Express show in Liverpool). Anyway this particular concert has a Franz Ferdinand feel to it (music that girls can dance to), and reminds us that they breathed life back into the British music scene not so long ago, even if they do remind me of The Jam. Performing in Amsterdam on the 11th March 2006 this set comprises of songs from the first two albums: 01 - Cheating On You 02 - Jacqueline 03 - Tell Her Tonight 04 - Shopping For Blood 05 - Take Me Out 06 - Love And Destroy 07 - Truck Stop 08 - This Fire 09 - Michael 10 - Darts Of Pleasure Band Line up: Alex Kapranos - lead vocals, guitar Nick McCarthy - rhythm guitar, keyboards Bob Hardy - bass guitar Paul Thomson - drums This is a 192kbps - stereo FM recording. Bob Marley - Paris Theatre London 1973

Image
Bob Marley and the Wailers undertook the 'Catch A Fire' tour from April 27th to July 21st 1973, in the UK and then finishing in the USA. The set list varied from show to show on this tour, however this gig captures those songs most frequently performed, and includes both Peter Tosh compositions (Stop That Train and 400 Years). The running order is also fairly typical of the gigs where these songs were performed. This concert was at The BBC's Paris Theatre in London, the line up included Wailers stalwarts Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer. The concert lasted just 45 minutes and an additional performance of Jammin' recorded at Pittsburgh in 1980 is included at the end. This then is Bob Marley and the Wailers live at the BBC Paris Theatre, on the 24th May 1973. Set list is: 1. Rastafarian Chant 2. Slave Driver 3. Stop The Train 4. No More Trouble 5. 400 Years 6. Midnight Raver 7. Stir It Up 8. Concrete Jungle 9. Get Up Stand Up 10. Kinky Reggae Re broa...

America - Live In Boston 1975

Image
America (the band) formed in 1970. By the time of this concert in 1975, they were in the process of releasing their first 'greatest hits' album. With five albums released by 1975 (the first two went platinum, the following three gold), the band who formed in London (UK), had achieved popularity and commercial success both sides of the Atlantic. The band continue to tour and record, this concert however is from their first era of success. Performing at the Boston Music Hall, Boston, MA, USA on the 4th May 1975 this is a full concert from America . Set list: 01. Intro 02. Tin Man 03. Muskrat Love 04. Baby It's Up To You 05.
