Leahy - Hannah Scott - Tamara Willamson - Kill The Giants - Palberta

Leahy have shared the title track from their new album 'Good Water' and what a superb piece it is with wonderful vocals and harmonies. ==== Our third feature this year for Hannah Scott comes in the form of 'Untangling' where once again her beautifully crafted music and distinctive vocals impress. ==== It's been quite some time since Tamara Willamson last graced our pages and it's a warm welcome back as we feature her new single 'Swim' along with another recent one 'Flashback' both of which confirm she can and still does deliver creative and fabulous music. ==== Kill The Giants have released a poignant video for the title track of their new album 'Three Word Phrase'. This eclectic and genre defying band have produced a gem of an album of which this track is but one dimension. ==== Palberta are getting plenty of attention with the new song and video for 'Before I Got Here' where melody, harmonies and punk sensibilities come together wonderfully.

===================================================

Leahy - Good Water.

If you think you know what the music of Canadian band Leahy sounds like, it’s time to think again.

Their new album Good Water brings the five women members of the group – Leahy sisters Julie, Erin, Maria, Siobheann, and Denise – freshly to the fore, in singing and especially songwriting, along with brother Frank on drums. As the songs on Good Water took shape, a new edge to their sound began to emerge with the addition of electric guitars which – as played by new band member Xavier Leahy (as well as guest musicians on the recording Bill Dillon, Nick Johnson and Adam Agati) – spurred the band on to explore the outer edges of their traditional/Celtic/folk/roots musical origins, pushing well beyond that footing.

In another new development, Good Water finds the band working under the sharp, exacting hand of Grammy-winning Canadian producer David Bottrill (Peter Gabriel, Rush, Smashing Pumpkins, Afro Celt Sound System), who brought an additional new intensity to the sonic palette. The result is a wide-ranging collection of songs that newly ignite the many musical influences that motivate the band members – from rock to choral, country to classical, and beyond.

As an example, the first single and title track, “Good Water,” is an entirely contemporary song of hope; a timely message to a generation of “people called to be together” in a world stricken by anxiety, turmoil, and uncertainty. Although it expresses a universal sentiment, it’s as relevant a song as you’ll hear in 2020. With “Good Water,” Leahy have caught the eternal in the commonplace, and captured a feeling we can all recognize now, across the globe.

Hannah Scott - Untangling.

London-Based independent artist Hannah Scott is fast cementing her place as one of the country’s most exciting new songwriters, with her emotive songs and striking voice. Untangling, the third single from her forthcoming album, showcases her powerful and personal storytelling.

The song expresses the dismantling of a life and home following the breakdown of a long term relationship. Co-written and produced with long-standing creative partner Stefano Della Casa (Ultra Music Publishing), Untangling expertly combines organic, live elements with electronic sounds.

The two artists have struck a perfect balance between Hannah’s traditional songwriting craft and Stefano’s unique cinematic production. Recent highlights for the pair include being awarded funding by Help Musicians UK to go towards the production of the album, opening for Madeleine Peyroux to an audience of 2000 at
Edinburgh’s Festival Theatre and travelling across Ireland with Paddy Casey to open shows for him in Dublin and in a tiny Irish speaking village near Galway!

Their music has also been featured on BBC Radio 2 including a live session with Dermot O’Leary, BBC 6 Music, BB Introducing, The Guardian, MOJO and Clash Magazine.

Tamara Willamson - Swim / Flashback.

Swim is single number four this year and is a ten minute sound journey. Collaborating this month with award winning HBO and Canadian Screen film composer Tom Third. This single is not a single but rather an ocean of self adulation. And why not...

Dubbed the Godmother of indie Tamara Williamson has opened for Oasis,
been told she is Feists inspiration and beat Bjork in the listings of best show in NOW mag.

Tamara Williamson has been a mainstay in the Toronto music scene since the early 90s. She released 3 albums with her band Mrs.Torrance on the major label BMG. Mrs.Torrance toured extensively in Canada opening for such acts as Oasis, The Beautiful South, Talk Talk, and Jewel. They toured with bands such as The Crash Test Dummies, The Pursuit of Happiness, The Waltons, The Rheostatics, Hayden and King Cobb Steelie. Their single Mrs. Torrance broke into radio with their single and were mainstays in Much Music rotation.

In 2000 Mrs. Torrance disbanded and Tamara started a solo career. Her music is ethereal and sensitive. Using many effects and layers she was one of the first artists to start live looping and was known for her experimentation using both vocal effects and looping. Tamara was featured in The New Music Show in 2000 and her first independent single went into rotation on MUCH Music.

Her first recording Nightmare on Queen Street was very well received and Tamara played at many folk festivals such as Hillside, The Regina Folk Festival, and NXNE. She also went down the West Coast touring with Bob Wiseman and Matt Nathensen.

Kill The Giants - Three Word Phrase.

St Albans's genre bending collective Kill The Giants are back with their third LP - Three Word Phrase.

The album has been recorded in response to the extreme pressures put on society and individuals casued by the continuing lockdown restrictions imposed by the government. Freedom and democracy have been surrendered to an increasingly authoritarian government bent on creating mass fear in the population so that they can be controlled. The band are focusing on celebrating and cherishing our freedoms.

One of these tools of control is the repetitive use of a Three Word Phrase devised by behavioural scientists on the SAGE committee these are an effective tool of mind control and the likes of Adolus Huxley (whom the band sample) warned about this over 70 years ago. CONTROL THE VIRUS, STAY AT HOME, HANDS FACE SPACE - to name a few.

The band also sample Charlie Chaplin (from his famous speech in The Great Dictator), Geroge Orwell, Donald Trump & even Boris Johnson.

KTG frontman Mark Christopher Lee has had a traumatic time during lockdown and is wanting to raise awareness of all those with mental health issues who have suffered as a result of continuing lockdown with treatments being cancelled and suicides increasing.

Palberta - Before I Got Here.

NYC punk trio, Palberta are set to release their new album, Palberta5000 on January 22, 2021. They have a new single and video, ‘Before I Got Here’ – it’s out via Wharf Cat Records (Bambara, Public Practice).

I'm not sure if you're aware of the band already but if not, they're an NYC-based trio who've developed a combination of a really devoted cult audience and critical acclaim over the last few years in the US, earning comparisons to some of the legends of left-field music like Captain Beefheart (Rolling Stone), ESG (Pitchfork), CAN and Yoko Ono (FADER), and Pitchfork called their last LP, 2018's Roach Going Down "a leap to another level...[that] suggests even higher peaks to come."

Their new LP really delivers on the promise that their last album's direction implied, upping the production and reconciling their sound with more traditional pop forms while sacrificing absolutely none of the Palberta-ness that has endeared them to people over their catalog to date. The band opened for Bikini Kill on some of their US dates last year and were supposed to tour the UK and Europe for the first time earlier this year before COVID hit – hopefully, these dates will now come next year.

Zachary Kibbee - Jody and the Jerms

Zachary Kibbee has a new video for his single 'Somewhere To Put My Gold'. The video captures the sheer vibrance and energy of the song which is a funky, riff driven affair with a mass of musical hooks to dig in deep. ==== Jody and the Jerms make their third appearance on Beehive Candy with 'It's All Up To You' a song that exudes charm, energy, melody and just plain gorgeous vibes.

===================================================

Zachary Kibbee - Somewhere To Put My Gold.

Los Angeles rocker Zachary Kibbee has released the new video for his single, “Somewhere To Put My Gold.” The track is a part of his new album Life In Low Fidelity, released earlier this summer. Kibbee exhibits sincere enthusiasm for music with his unique combination of modern alternative rock elements with his authentic gritty, bluesy style in his video. Zachary Kibbee’s “Somewhere To Put My Gold” video is now available to view on his YouTube channel.

Zachary Kibbee and his fellow band members, Derrick Wong and Jessica Goodwin, passionately jam out together in the video for “Somewhere To Put My Gold.” Wong and Goodwin provide energetic bass playing and exuberant drumming that accentuate Kibbee’s rangy vocals and heavy guitar playing. The video is brimming with confident rockstar energy. Kibbee struts around while zealously rocking out; “Somewhere To Put My Gold” is a thrilling experience both visually and acoustically. The song’s inspiration came from one of Kibbee’s co-writers, Frank Palazzolo, commenting on his swagger.

"Frank said he really liked my swagger and had a lyric that he thought would fit my style, 'somewhere to put my gold.' I loved the idea, so we ran with that concept: swagger and gold," explains Kibbee. The video was directed by Danny Herb and produced by Eric McNeely, who also co-wrote the song with Frank Palazzolo and Kibbee. With COVID-19 still running rampant, it’s not an ideal time to gather as a group, so Kibbee wanted to ensure that everyone involved in the shoot was operating with the best Covid prevention practices.

“It’s definitely an interesting time to shoot a music video. We opted for a skeleton crew and made sure to maintain social distancing between and even during takes. I asked that everyone wear masks and get tested,” explains Kibbee. “I was so grateful that everyone was on the same page as far as keeping everyone safe and healthy while getting the job done with such a minimal crew.”

Jody and the Jerms - It's All Up To You.

Oxford, England's Jody and the Jerms have released their debut full length album, Deeper, featuring the single 'It's All Up to You', a track that singer Jody describes as "A bit of a dichotomy - an upbeat fast-paced track with an infectious country tinged guitar riff and British Summertime Hammond organ-laden chorus. The words kinda reflect our mood as we  came out of lockdown, and how we need to adapt and be better."

Released September 4th, the album has already been met with critical praise."Jody & the Jerms' sound harks back to those untouchable days indie music enjoyed in the 90s, possessing seemingly effortlessness melodies and choruses which embed themselves in your head for days,"  said XS Noize in their review. "The new album immediately brings to mind a merge of Doves and Mazzy Star," says Medium.com, "Comparable to the likes of Best Coast and even The Cars...an album bringing together 90’s indie-pop with a fresh, airy sound touching on dream-pop."

Formed in Oxford, England, in the Fall of 2019, Jody and the Jerms have been writing, recording and playing their blend of melodic and uplifting indie/alt pop ever since. They started as a trio 10 months ago - two veteran indie rockers, who boast Radiohead and Supergrass to their credits, and freshly recruited newcomer Jody. Jody had never sung professionally before, but had agreed to a rehearsal and quickly the band took shape. With a few quick release singles, they soon grew to a five piece after picking up national airtime on Radio X (UK), Sirius XM (USA), RTVE (Spain) and BBC (UK), had a European tour locked and loaded - then COVID hit. So they wrote an album instead. Deeper was released on September 4.

Starveya - Billie Jo - Mags On Earth - This Frontier Needs Heroes - Carmanah

Starveya are a Los Angeles-based psychedelic indie rock band who have just released 'Let You In' and it's a well cultivated, melodic and soothing piece. ==== Billie Jo has a new single entitled 'Simpler Way Of Life' where crafted country music is well matched with Billie Jo's passionately delivered vocals. ==== Mags On Earth appeared here a couple of times last year and makes a welcome return with 'The Good Man In Town' which is another "inventive and alluring song" to quote our previous description. ==== This Frontier Needs Heroes is the moniker of Brad Lauretti and 'Go With The Flow' is the title track for his fifth album and it's something of a genre defying but nonetheless hook filled song that could loosely fall under the Americana umbrella.  ==== As stated before we don't often feature cover versions however Carmanah have just released their take on the classic 'Bang Bang' and as they have already impressed us a lot this year, it's no surprise that this really is a fabulous new version.

===================================================

Starveya - Let You In.

Los Angeles-based psychedelic indie rock outfit Starveya return with heady ambient vibrations laced with post-Summer melancholy on new single "Let You In".

The new release is described by the band as "Sort of an anti love song, it is loosely about love and relationships. Not so much about a love lost as it is about a love that never was. Or never was what you thought it to be or dreamt it to be."

Starveya is currently in the studio working on their upcoming full-length album Abandon All Muses, which is slated for a 2021 release.

"I never felt this way before but my dreams were so much more"...

"When we are young, love is a concept we don't fully understand and is often driven by impulses, physical attraction, ego and other things that are not conducive to a lasting relationship. So as we get older and mature, we can grow apart from a person because the relationship you had with that person was not built on a secure foundation."

"couldnt tell a soul; what lies within but somehow i can only let you in" refers to the fear of opening up to someone and never fully being able to let them truly know you but somehow still letting that person into your life and becoming a part of your story for such a significant amount of time."

"so i walk this endless land, leave my footprints in the sand until I return again".

Mags On Earth - The Good Man In Town.

The new single ‘The Good Man In Town’  is the first song and video to be shared from the upcoming debut album 'For What Began by Putney Bridge’ (out October 16th), a visual album about journey of coming to terms with the loss of a relationship.

Following her visual EP last year, Mags has again self-produced all videos for this album, which will be dropped on her channel in the coming couple of weeks, before the full album is made available.

Produced by good friend and long time collaborator producer Jose Manuel Cubides, who also produced the previous EP ‘Girl in the City’.

‘The Good Man in Town’ is a song about coping with being left by acknowledging the idealisation of that person.

Carmanah - Bang Bang.

Carmanah is crafting a musical niche of their very own, a vintage blend of the intuitive and the technical; a blend that lies somewhere among roots, rock and blues — all seamlessly woven together by Laura Mina Mitic’s soulfully luminous vocals.

As a collective, Carmanah — who’s lineup also includes guitarist and vocalist Pat Ferguson, keyboardist Mike Baker, bassist Jamil Demers, drummer Graham Keehn and backup vocalist Lo Waight — share a reverence and respect for humanity and the earth. This shared ethos guides the decisions they make as a band; from being ambassadors for The Jellyfish Project, an educational and movement-building environmental organization represented by a global coalition of musicians; to touring in a retrofitted vegetable-oil driven tour bus, an ambitious project that Ferguson himself has taken on in his own backyard. Woven into their music is contemporary comment on the current political climate, environmental issues and the human condition; “I get really excited when I think about music as a way to spark action,” Mitic explains.

The passion and authenticity Carmanah brings to all that they do has certainly caught the attention of audiences and media alike. Jon Williams of The Zone 91.3 Victoria calls Mitic “the Stevie Nicks of our generation,” and Mike Devlin of The Times Colonist states that “Very few bands in Canada fuse harmony with adventure in the way Carmanah does in concert.” Vancouver’s Daily Hive recently ranked the band among B.C.’s top acts to look out for, and with the band playing to rapidly growing audiences there are plenty who agree. Appearances at notable festivals such as Edmonton Folk Festival, Hillside Festival and Winnipeg Folk Festival, as well as tours and shows throughout Canada and the US supporting Current Swell, KD Lang, Ziggy Marley and others, have allowed the band to hone their craft, while their natural chemistry as musicians electrifies the crowd. “The thrill of making a connection with an audience — any audience — is what keeps me going,” says Ferguson.

CF Watkins - Teen Creeps - Lavender Diamond - Charlie Kaplan - Tracy Layne

CF Watkins has shared the title track 'Babygirl' ahead of the album due October 18 and it's an upbeat folk pop track that bodes well for the full collection. === Belgian indie rockers Teen Creeps have just shared 'Seeing Shapes' which is a full on and hook filled track. === Lavender Diamond announced their first studio album in 8 years 'Now Is The Time' with the new single 'This Is How We Rise'. The song itself is beautiful, with sublime vocals and a superb musical arrangement. === Charlie Kaplan has just released 'Pete Williams' ahead of his November album release 'Sunday', the song has been described as "gripping and impassioned" which is a fair and fine description. === Tracy Layne has a brand new single entitled 'Smoke And Mirrors' where her refined vocals are more than capable of powering up, adding passion and drama to a really fine song.

===================================================

CF Watkins - Babygirl.

Americana-pop singer-songwriter, Cf Watkins, has released “Babygirl,” the title track from her upcoming album, due out October 16, 2020, on Whatever’s Clever Records.

“Babygirl” turns the typical love song on its head - instead of focusing on romantic love, Watkins wrote the song as an ode to her best girlfriends. “When I thought of the purest love I know, these relationships were the first to come to mind,” she says. “In romance, I've always been very confused- but love was so clear, magic, and eternal with my best friends, those I called babygirl - who have danced with me in the early morning rain, laughing through the confusion.” She continues, “This is an album meant for other women to hear -- with songs that are vulnerable and powerful.”

Based in Brooklyn for the past nine years, Watkins’ Americana-pop style embodies the influences of her North Carolina roots. Performing since the age of fourteen, she has shared the stage with acts like Langhorne Slim, Future Birds, Chatham County Line, Wilder Maker, Lowland Hum, and Alpenglow. Her 2016 debut release, I Am New, as well as the single, “Frances and Jack,” were produced by Daniel Goans of Lowland Hum at White Star Studios.

For the recording of Babygirl, Watkins collaborated with Max Hart, a producer and multi-instrumentalist who has previously worked with artists like The War On Drugs, Katy Perry, and Melissa Etheridge. The album portrays her growth as both a person and a woman. “When I think about my last album, I feel I was writing songs about weakness,” Watkins says. “With this album, I made a conscious effort to write songs about the power of choosing yourself.”

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Teen Creeps - Seeing Shapes.

‘SEEING SHAPES’ is the first single taken from ‘FOREVER’, the new album by Belgian indie rockers TEEN CREEPS, set for release on 22 January 2021 on [PIAS] Recordings. One thing’s for sure; TEEN CREEPS love the 1990s! The Belgian’s 3 piece’s sound is a high five to the fuzzy guitars, melancholic vocals and fast-paced drums of era defining bands like DINOSAUR JR, SUPERCHUNK or SONIC YOUTH.

Safe to say TC’s debut album (2018) pushed the right buttons. Sophomore album ‘FOREVER’ is gearing up to be as intense as their previous outing, but with room for more melody and a little sprinkle of pop fairy dust.

‘SEEING SHAPES’, the first track to whet your appetite, kicks off with the sort of fast paced guitar riffs and frantic drumming the band’s known for, but it’s by far their most catchy release to date.

In the accompanying video we see the trio getting ready for a show: rehearsing, checking the sound and finally playing said live show. It was filmed before the covid-pandemic hit. That makes it an unintentional testament of the importance of live music. Something we can hopefully return to sooner rather than later.

The whole video was shot on old school video cameras. The VCR quality gives the video a charm and 90s touch that suits the band and their sound.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lavender Diamond - This Is How We Rise.

Lavender Diamond announced their first studio album in 8 years Now Is The Time with the new single "This Is How We Rise." The Los Angeles-based trio of Becky Stark, Steve Gregoropoulos, and Ron Regé, Jr. will release the album on December 4, 2020 via Petaluma Records.

"Right before our current storm of catastrophe these songs came pouring in to us. These songs of healing for a world in crisis," explains Becky Stark. "Crisis holds profound opportunity for healing and transformation. Now is the most powerful time we have ever known to transform our world and to build justice, peace and prosperity for all by living in harmony and with love for the earth, embodying the wisdom of equality and respect for all."

The band captured the core of the album in just two days, relying on gut instinct to guide their every move, and while the material was written well before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the result is a particularly timely, vital collection, one that couldn’t have come along at a more necessary moment.

"I came to this realization that there’s medicine in the music itself," says Stark. "It can lift people up and heal them and point them toward transformation, and that led me to this tremendously powerful need to start writing and recording again."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Charlie Kaplan - Pete Williams.

New York based musician and singer-songwriter Charlie Kaplan (Office Culture) has shared "Pete Williams" – the gripping, impassioned second single from his forthcoming debut album Sunday, out November 13.

Kaplan wrote the songs on Sunday in the wake of his father's death. "Each song was an exercise in conjuring light, warmth, insight, guidance, release – my life’s absent emotional palette,” he explains. “I used music as a way to induce feelings that no longer occurred naturally.”

Despite the origin of these songs, the central coping strategy on Sunday is not escapism. On "Pete Williams," Kaplan grapples directly with loss and existential dread, while grinning back into the void. Inspired by finding his high school transcript while going through his childhood bedroom following his dad's passing, Kaplan solicits the voice of his guidance counselor: "He's a man who judges things with his heart/I came to him when shame was tearing me apart," Kaplan sings. The exuberant chorus – "Should I relax?/And take it slow?" – crystallizes a central dilemma that crops up throughout Sunday: will life ever be the same again? How can I find joy, or regain my sense of control? How can I find a new place in the world?

"Pete Williams" features Andrew Daly-Frank on guitars and Ben Wagner on drums, as well as contributions from Kaplan's Office Culture bandmate Winston Cook-Wilson on piano, and Cole Kamen-Green and Alec Spiegelman (of Cuddle Magic) on trumpet and saxophone. "Pete Williams" follows the serene "California Days," and is now available on all streaming platforms.

Tracy Layne - Smoke And Mirrors.

From coast to coast, and across the ocean, soul singer Tracy Layne has pursued music just as much as music pursued her. This time, she's taking on Nashville as a solo artist.

“Music has followed me through all the stages of my life."

Layne moved to Nashville last year, and instantly began working on her solo debut EP. She puts a modern twist on a dark, folk vibe with her latest single Smoke & Mirrors. The soulful tune reflects on a past relationship that left her “paralyzed." Once she had the lyrics and the concept down, she reached out to her musician brother to help create something truly unique. She's coined the sound "moon-eyed soul."

“The happy fantasy I always wanted felt like it was right in front of me - only just out of reach. When the ugly reality kicked in, I was left with anger and confusion - hence Smoke & Mirrors."

Layne's upcoming EP, Smoke & Mirrors, touches on the five stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance). The title track represents the second stage: anger. "It paints a picture of the instability I felt during my long term relationship with an alcoholic.”

She hopes for this single and EP to connect with her audience in a relatable way, and that the sound peaks their curiosity to hear more. "Each song on this record has a unique feel - so there's something for everyone. Smoke & Mirrors has a dissonant, angsty vibe that I hope draws in listeners."

Layne didn’t stop there once the song was recorded and ready to be released. She brought the lyrics to life in a music video, with husband and wife duo CreateWell LLC.

The video takes place in a dilapidated and smoky house, representing the internal confusion in Layne's mind. She finds herself searching the mirror and the house for answers, and reflecting on the burns and scars inflicted on her.
