Braids - Eclipse (Ashley).

Montreal-based indie art rock band Braids announce the release of their new song "Eclipse (Ashley)." Along with the official video, "Eclipse (Ashley)" marks the trio's long-awaited return and the first taste of their forthcoming new album releasing next year on Secret City Records. Dedicated to the singer's best friend, it's a song that sinks deep into a feeling of reverie for nature, the love found in friendship, and the vital essence of personal reflection.

"'Eclipse (Ashley)' is a love song made for my best friend Ashley Obscura," stated singer Raphaelle Standell-Preston. "During the car ride to go and view the total solar eclipse, we were fretting about not having glasses to stare at the sun, you know, those funny ones that look like you’re sitting down to watch a 3D movie. Amongst the chatter Ashley said 'we should take this opportunity to think about what eclipses us in our lives.' BAM. REFOCUS. We all took this sentiment with us as we sat on the side of the quarry, as the moon came to hug the sun. We sat in silence perched amongst the tall grass, the wildflowers, the rocks and glistening water, closed eyes, reflecting. Returning to the studio, the song poured out of us in one shot."

The definition of an eclipse is "the total or partial obscuring of one celestial body by another." With effortless beauty, Braids have crafted a balm to combat the dark forces that cross us. To overcome the fears that plague us, the planets eclipsing our planetary bodies, the patterns that bind us, the anxiety that grips us, the heartbreak that breaks us. The balm is the perfect antidote to such darkness and chaos: that of hope, pleasure and, above all, always love.

Braids is comprised of Standell-Preston, Austin Tufts, and Taylor Smith. Formed in 2007 in Alberta, they have solidified a decade-long reputation for their musical ingenuity and established themselves as one of Canada's most acclaimed art rock bands, garnering two Polaris Prize shortlists and winning the 2016 Juno Award for Alternative Album of the Year. With Standell-Preston's vocals as the pillar of their sound, Braids weave organic and electronic elements together amidst a lyrical landscape that is intimate, explosive, and emotionally-immersive. Their albums have earned praise from Pitchfork, NPR, New York Times, T Magazine, NME, and The Guardian among many others. They have supported or toured with artists such as Toro Y Moi, The Antlers, Wye Oak, Purity Ring, and Friendly Fires along with festival appearances around the world including Glastonbury, Primavera, Osheaga, Hopscotch, and SXSW.

13//ali_fawn - Future Swim.

Detroit-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Alister Fawnwoda AKA 13//ali_fawn releases ‘Future Swim’, the first single lifted from forthcoming album ‘Ruby Beach’, due in Summer 2020 and mixed by Welsh powerhouse David Wrench (Caribou, FKA Twigs, Sampha, Shura, The xx, Young Fathers, +++). Born in Motor City, Fawnwoda cultivated his musicianship through learning violin and piano from a young age. Honing his métier, he studied music, poetry and visual arts at The University of Miami and then the Tibetan Buddhist-founded Naropa University.

In 2016 he moved to LA to work under the tutelage of Hans Zimmer as an intern for the following three years. In 2019, Ali moved back to Detroit to quench a hankering for eclectic collaborations, both as a producer and as a musician. To date, he’s worked on projects with producers Cole M. Greif-Neil (Beck, Ariel Pink), Gordon Raphael (The Strokes), Sonny DiPerri (DIIV, Animal Collective), Marta Salogni (Björk, The xx), and many more. Additionally, he’s joined forces with musicians including Alex Carapetis (Nine Inch Nails, The Voidz), Jenny Lee Lindberg and Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint), Mauro Refosco (Talking Heads, Atoms for Peace), and Philip Peterson (Portugal. The Man).

"’Future Swim’ is about time-travel and death, and contemplates whether or not the two are intertwined as one thing," notes Fawnwoda.

"Musically and instrumentally we wanted to give the feeling of time warping and stretching as in the intro, and then skyrocketing forward in a linear fashion. Lyrically, the song is about a man who stands at the edge of a sea cliff, and hears the ocean beckons him in. In his head he hears this as an invitation into a portal in which he can go to another time and place; specifically the past to prevent the death of his loved one."

With a keen eye for aesthetics, Fawnwoda enlisted photographer Daisuke Yokota to curate the visual side of the project. Daisuke and www.anothersomething.org share some words regarding the colour photographs, “With this series,” Yokota explains, he “tried not to take pictures,” and instead sought to “draw out the physical aspect of film.” Another Something talk through the physical process,“Yokota layered sheets of unused large format colour film and applied unorthodox developing methods before scanning the results. Here, documentation is replaced with darkroom alchemy in order to show that the essence of photography rests not necessarily with the camera, but in film itself.”

Fawnwoda was influenced by Daft Punk’s breakthrough album, Homework in addition to electronic artists like Suzanne Ciani, Aphex Twin, Helena Hauff and composer Arvo Pärt. Alister’s work is a combination of all these interests, with a deep passion for production processes that harkens back to his love for The Beatles’ White Album.

Wojtek the bear - Some States.

Scottish Fiction are delighted to present some states, the latest and last of this year's releases from Glasgow's five-piece wojtek the bear. some states completes the band's quartet of singles released during 2019, all of which are now collected on a limited edition 12" vinyl, old names for new shapes.

some states sees the band continue their fruitful working relationship with acclaimed producer Jamie Savage at Chem19 Studios [The Twilight Sad, Miaoux Miaoux, The Phantom Band, RM Hubbert]. some states taps straight into a rich vein of melancholy with it's early '90's alternative guitar line and laid back vocals.  The addition of strings to the bands permanent sound, once again serves to enrich and lift the track with soaring runs that create a lasting smile that only just the right piece of music can do.

Lead singer, and chief lyricist Tam Killean explains how the song came about, "it's a song about that particuarly painful end section of a failing relationship when it feels like all you're doing is arguing with the other person over the most ridiculous things, look who used the last of the toothpaste and didn't replace it.  The title comes from that old(ish) Scottish expression - "I've never been to America, but I've been in some states!"  I just really liked that dark, self-depreciating humour of it.  I think it's that ability to see the humour in the darkest of times that allows us to get through things sometimes."

The video for the single, shot by Kris Boyle, sees the band expand on the darkly-comic theme of failure with a Nigel Mansell obsessed Killean trying, and failing, to emulate his hero's exploits on the track.

The Small Press - Is This What You Want? (E.P).

Packing a punch with their bright pop-punk bravado, Sydney’s The Small Press are back, releasing their debut EP Is This What You Want?

Energetic and upbeat, the four-piece’s radiant take on pop-punk shines across the project’s five tracks. Opening the EP with their three previously released singles, now remastered for this project, the opening is a brilliant introduction into The Small Press' clever indie punk mix. Whether it be the fast paced ‘Not Afraid to Love You’, boppy ‘Console Kids’ or feel-good ‘Remona’, each single stands out with it's own individual aesthetic.

Easing into ‘This Is Falling’, the first of the unreleased tracks, the group’s versatility is demonstrated brilliantly as they slow things down for this heartfelt piece. Ending on a bang, ‘8 Bit Summer’ is a scorcher which boasts gritty guitar lines and an addictive melody. Contrasting with the lively instrumental, lyrically the track is about a terrible relationship, the emotions during, and the aftermath. "It’s a song about those days when you should be outside basking in the sun, but instead you just can’t help but do nothing, stay inside, sleep in and play videos games," singer Maddie Gilholme explains.

Their three aforementioned singles were released last year, and saw spins on triple j’s Short.Fast Loud and Lunchtime shows, alongside praise across triple j Unearthed. Spending the majority of the year relentlessly gigging and honing their sound, the band have gone on to support the likes of Thelma Plum, dave and High Tropics.

Mother Mariposa - Pilot Light.

Mother Mariposa is the new project of Jsun Atoms (The Upsidedown, Daydream Machine, PIA) and Thomas Mudrick. For those unfamiliar, Atoms' band The Upsidedown made a name for themselves with TV placements on shows that include HBO's True Blood, Showtime's Ray Donovan, and most recently FX's Animal Kingdom. The band went on to tour extensively with artists such as The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Raveonettes, Psychedelic Furs, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Echo, and the Bunnymen, Allah Las, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Jagwar Ma, and friends Hope Sandoval, Luna, and The Black Angels.

As one could imagine, being around such an esteemed group of artists has to have some effect on a person. Out of The Upsidedown comes a band two years in the making. Joining forces with New Zealand’s Dan Fernie-Harper (Ride Into the Sun, The Dunes), Austin Barone (Lola Buzzkill), and Trask Schulte (Paste), Mother Mariposa have created a melding of electronica, psychedelia, and post-punk brilliance.

The band is proud to announce their debut album titled The Monarch Key. On first listen, many people think the music draws comparisons to dance music, but the spacious, droning tracks are actually the product of a five-piece band with guitar, bass, keyboards, and drums.  Lead single "Pilot Light" was written with consultation from legendary indie artist Dean Wareham (Galaxie 500) who described the new record as "Epic." The Monarch Key by Mother Mariposa is out everywhere now via Little Cloud Records.

Alexandria Miallot - Someone To Keep You Warm.

Hailing from Vancouver Island, the genre-blending “swoon rock” artist Alexandria Maillot released her sophomore album ‘Benevolence’ on November 22nd 2019. Armed with razor-sharp wit and hopeless romanticism, Alexandria dissects narratives from personal life-experiences and delivers through sometimes schmaltzy and sometimes electropoppy instrumentation and arrangements. For this, she’s often been compared to heavyweights such as Feist, Stevie Nicks and Alabama Shakes’ Brittany Howard.

Maillot has already accumulated an impressive list of credits including being scouted by esteemed Canadian producer and songwriter David Foster (Christina Aguilera, Madonna, Whitney Houston) aged twelve, collaborating with Randy Bachman (Ringo Starr, The Beach Boys), and securing a feature on the Opera Winfrey network.

Touring extensively across Europe and Canada performing at festivals such as Reeperbahn and Iceland Airwaves, Alexandria is no stranger to the live-circuit. Her debut album ‘Time’ also saw her playlisted across national radio and gained her critical acclaim internationally across industry peers and fans.

With her second full-length ‘Benevolence’, we see a change in the Canadian singer-songwriter. On tracks like ‘I Never Liked Your Friends’, we see her exploring a more sardonic side to her songwriting, while ‘Make It Out’ comes from a darker place; she says it’s “a song about depression; the lack of motivation that plagues the day, where solace is only found in sleep at night.”

‘Someone To Keep You Warm’ sees the soloist showcasing menacing synthesisers after a Kelsey Lu-esque introduction. Themed around the joy she gained after seeing her ex struggle to find a lover, the singer had this to say about the schadenfreudian number; “It’s a song about watching a former partner struggle to find companionship and getting enjoyment out of it.”

Approachable Members Of Your Local Community & Dulcie - Strangest Places.

Approachable Members Of Your Local Community invite you to join them in another cathartic boogie as they release new single and accompanying video today for ‘Strangest Places’ - a collaboration with fellow Australian indie-poppers, all-female 4-piece, Dulcie. The new release proceeds their forthcoming, Love Thy Neighbour EP, out Jan 31st and comes as the band prepares to showcase at SXSW in 2020.

From the depths of suburban Australia has emerged a commercial partnership so robust, so well-negotiated, that the foundations of our earthly existence have indeed been shaken. ‘Strangest Places’ captures the essence of the band collaborative spirit, “The story of our interstate partnership (with Dulcie) began in the greenrooms of Australia, in what we call the Bitter Winter of 2019. We immediately developed a collaborative commercial relationship with a strong grounding in mutual respect and synergies. Hands were firmly shaken, and the deal was done: a song was to be made. 'Strangest Places' is about making new friends, being in wacky places, and getting up to the business of life.” says Micky Fisher (Bassist) AMOYLC.

Following standout sets at BIGSOUND 2019 and support slots for Polish Club, half•alive (USA), Kira Puru and Joyride and more, the EP marks a culmination of their growth as a band over the last 24 months and features the previously released singles ‘On + On’ and ‘Citrus Fruit’. Working with creative director Giulia McGauran on visuals and writing with the likes of Japanese Wallpaper and Alex Lahey, Approachable Members know that collaboration is key to a successful community. Whatever you come for, Approachable Members Of Your Local Community just want to make you feel at home, and share their little slice of suburban paradise with you.

Annabel Allum - Wojtek the bear - Frankiie - The Channel - The Switch

Yep we are featuring Annabel Allum again, this time we have the brand new E.P 'Gravel Not The Grave'. We have already featured three songs from the collection and a couple of days ago she added 'Baby Berlin' as another separate release, anyhow it's good to have the full E.P. from this very talented multi-genre artist.

Wojtek the bear have been featured here in the past and today's release 'slow tv' is a splendid and upbeat pop song where the musical arrangement and vocals are oh so refreshing.

Frankiie return for a third time on Beehive Candy with 'Funny Feelings' and once again their mixture of indie dream rock is notable to say the least, this time there are some surf vibes thrown in for good measure and the hooks are everywhere.

We have the new single 'Days Ind' from The Channel a family band where the music might be produced between work and looking after their young ones, however they create some absolutely charming and extremely professional music.

Norwegian band The Switch have shared the wonderfully titled song 'Spring In The Forest Of Time'. The music is rightly described as sophisticated pop, it's also full of character and more importantly catchy and addictive listening.

Annabel Allum - Gravel Not The Grave (E.P).

Annabel Allum’s startling development from punk-folk roots to slacker-pop sensation continues to gather pace as she gears up to release her new EP Gravel Not The Grave, out 13th September via cult London label Killing Moon.

Thematically linked all the way through, Annabel uses each song to tell a short story, all linking together to weave a treatise on personal and societal change. She documents the listen as such: "You are immersed in the process of revolutionising one's life. Conceptually it’s about getting up and changing the thing you’re most miserable about, whether that be an unhealthy relationship, political injustice, or addiction."

Swapping shows at local pubs in her hometown six nights a week for acclaimed performances around the world, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to ignore the rise of the emerging songwriter. Her glaring potential continues to show few boundaries, with the Guildford native’s fierce indie licks scrawled across an expanding punk repertoire of vital, snarling songs that resonate deeply throughout her growing fan base.

Long marked out as one to watch, the swell of praise for Annabel Allum from all corners is resounding. Long-time championed by BBC Radio 1 (Huw Stephens, Jack Saunders), she’s hit the daytime playlist, performed a live session at the iconic Maida Vale studios and featured on their SXSW stage, a festival she’s now taken by storm twice. Other notable shows include a dream-come-true emotional performance at Reading festival, as well as The Great Escape & Live At Leeds.

Tours with Nadine Shah, Alex Lahey and Beth Ditto have been the perfect way to cut her teeth in the presence of esteemed artists, each offering their own sage advice, with several more opportunities lined up this autumn. She’s now passing on her own influence as a growing artist by curating her own Perceptible Festival in Guildford this September.

Press-wise, commendation is significant, key praise coming from FADER, DIY, The Independent, The Line Of Best Fit, Clash and NME, who named the British singer-songwriter as one of their top discoveries at SXSW earlier this year. Beyond music Annabel keeps a well maintained, genuine aesthetic – leading to deals with indie clothing companies Bastien Classics and Cheap Monday. She has also had acoustic tracks included in feature film Spaceship (BFI, BBC).

Wojtek the bear - slow tv.

Scottish Fiction are delighted to present slow tv, the new single from Glasgow's five-piece wojtek the bear. slow tv is the third of four singles being released by wojtek the bear during 2019, all of which will be collected on a limited edition 12" vinyl, old names for new shapes, in November 2019.

As with their last two singles, slow tv was once again recorded with acclaimed producer Jamie Savage at Chem19 Studios [The Twilight Sad, Miaoux Miaoux, The Phantom Band, RM Hubbert].  With slow tv, wojtek the bear chart a course through upbeat pop melodies, driven by a C86 influenced guitar line and a chorus hook so infectious it should come with a World Health Organisation warning.  In true Scottish fashion however, the uplifting music is juxtaposed with a somewhat morose underbelly.

The song was inspired, as many are, by past relationships, especially those ones where at their close you no longer have any connection to the other person.  Lead singer, and chief songwriter Tam Killean explains, "I guess the track is a rumination on the total opposite ends of the spectrum you can end up at with people you've been in relationships with.  There are people I've been with before who at the time are your entire world, yet now if they got wiped out by the 267 bus to Possilpark, I'd probably only find out about it if it was in the Evening Times the next day."

Accompanied by a gruesomly hilarious video by Scottish artist David Galletly, slow tv will be released digitally on all platforms on today, 13th September 2019 via Scottish Fiction.

Frankiie - Funny Feelings.

Frankiie is a Vancouver-based indie dream-rock group. With live shows from Mexico City to Haida Gwaii, an east coast tour supporting The Charlatans UK, and recording with Jason Corbett of Jacknife Sound, their journey over the last year has been non-stop.

Ahead of their upcoming album, Forget Your Head (out on 9/20 via Paper Bag Records), the band have shared new single/video "Funny Feelings."

“Funny Feelings" embraces the surf-rock sound the band found through exploring tone and working with new guitars and pedals, as the ominous yet playful track encourages the listener to “feel your intuition.”

It’s lush, full band instrumentation recalls the group’s live show, where each player imbues the group with strength and the joy they find in performance.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Channel - Days Ind.

The Channel is excited to announce their new single "Days Ind" and the release of their fourth album, Multi Goods & Services, which was recorded in various band members’ bedrooms, bathrooms, and closets over the course of the last seven years in Austin, Texas.

The band, comprised of three siblings and their spouses, shares songwriting credits between Brent & Colby Pennington (brothers), Heather McAllister (sister), and Heather’s husband, Andy McAllister. Each songwriter and contributor brings their own unique voice to the mix, with influences ranging from the Everly Brothers to Sebadoh.

Music is a passion and not a profession for The Channel, so recording had to be squeezed in between working their day jobs and taking care of the new babies that were born during the album’s making (five in total). This relaxed and leisurely approach gave the members of The Channel a creative escape during one of life’s busiest seasons, while simultaneously creating their most accomplished album to date.

Lead single "Days Ind" is a song Colby wrote 23 years ago about a long night shift all alone, feeling abandoned in multiple ways, but hoping love could fix it all.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Switch - Spring In The Forest Of Time.

Following the outfit’s previous bodies of work “We’re Fooling No-One” and the Norwegian Grammy-awarded “The Switch Album”, they return with fifth full-length “Birds of Paradise”. Lead-vocalist Thomas Sagbråten and co-author of the bulk of the album says “We tried to make a musical universe with slightly different laws of nature than real life. A bit less gravitation. The air is thicker. It’s hyper realistic, but also unreal.”

From budding seeds to the overarching themes of this viridescent volume, the septet hones something every-bit stylistically varied, surrealistically inclined and tactile, like a brightly plumaged exotic bird lost in the upper stretches of the northern hemisphere.

With its soft vocals, and casino-style jazz undertones, ‘Spring in the Forest of Time’ isn’t confined to a single genre, with parts that seem to almost incorporate Muzak – that’s ‘elevator music’ in layman’s terms – through it’s odd time-signature and syncopated instrumental and percussion melodies.

The last single before the release of ‘Birds of Paradise’, the band says it’s the most hi-fi record of the album, and lyrically Peter Vollset daubs surreal brushstrokes; “The forest of time is budding now, tiny moments on every branch, they’re waiting to have their moment in the sunshine of your mind.”

Sound technician and repeat The Switch-collaborator Christian Engfelt (Serena Maneesh, Fieh, Band of Gold etc.) decided to make this his most meticulous work with the band yet, blowing by every self-imposed deadline in a year-long on-and-off series of recording sessions which resulted in an extraordinary sounding album; coherent and tight, but with great attention to detail.

The Switch was formed in 2010, made out of members from Oslo’s jazz, indie, artrock and folk scenes. They started out playing pretty regular pop rock, thinking that Norway, and this part of the world in general, produces an overflow of eclectic and hyphenated quality music, so someone had to deal with the basic stuff. The Switch decided to start in the dead centre, the almost generic, and work their way out from there. Slowly but surely the songs got more ambitious, the arrangements followed, the productions value had to step up and so forth.

Their debut album “Big If” (2014) was an eager meditation on psychedelic west-coast pop, the follow-up “B for the Beast” (2015) was an atmospheric prog homage to their hometown of Oslo, “We’re Fooling No One” (also 2015) made forays into the more painterly and improvised corners of the pop and ““The Switch Album” tried to get at the core of “classic pop-rock”: crystal clear sound, deft melodies, precise harmonies, sheer-drop middle eights and get-to-the-point storytelling. It was the band’s most successful album to date, it was included in several album of the year charts in Norwegian newspapers and got them a Spellemann - the Norwegian Grammy equivalent - in the indie category.

The ‘Birds of Paradise’ LP drops 27th September 2019.

Jesse Jo Stark - Joey Sweeney & The Neon Grease - Wojtek the bear

Jesse Jo Stark - Dandelion.

Background - Los Angeles-based rock goddess Jesse Jo Stark releases her highly anticipated debut EP Dandelion today. The album was written and produced by Jesse Jo, her guitarist Thomas Hunter and Dan Taylor (The Heavy). Steve Jones (Sex Pistols) also makes a special appearance on guitar for the lead track, “Dandelion.” The vibe of Dandelion is on brand – spooky and beguiling, with nods to rock and roll, blues, and old country.

Jesse Jo Stark is the femme fatale alternative music has been starving for. If Nick Cave and Elvira had a one-night stand, she might be the resulting progeny. Her last 5 singles – “Down Your Drain,” “Driftwood,” “April Flowers,” “Deadly Doll” and “Fire of Love” – have generated over 1 million Spotify plays and earned praise from fans and critics alike.

Jesse Jo has also secured her place as an emerging voice in rock with her scorching live shows, opening for Guns N’ Roses, Jane’s Addiction, headlining her own month-long residency at The Echo in Los Angeles and supporting indie darlings Sunflower Bean on a six-date domestic tour.

A lifetime music obsessive schooled at the altar of David Bowie and Fleetwood Mac and a born rock star, she represents the future of rock with a wink to its past. Jesse Jo Stark will release her first full length record this September. TWITTER.

We featured Jesse Jo Stark a couple of times in 2017 and the new song 'Dandelion' is the first of five tracks on the EP of the same name. Once again the atmospheric rock vibes are present throughout, as are the melodic hooks and her natural and appealing rock vocals.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Joey Sweeney & The Neon Grease - And Soon.

Background - Joey Sweeney is a Philadelphia-based songwriter who has been writing songs and prose since in the 1980s. Over the years, he has fronted the influential Philly bands The Trouble With Sweeney and The Barnabys, as well as recording and performing as a solo artist. The Neon Grease’s sound is rooted in a nighttime city vibe of rain-slicked streets with neon signs’ glow reflecting off them. It’s an album very much about the cities, and the way Sweeney's city or your city is changing. You could say the city is the central character, but there’s also much about falling in and out of love, being with your friends and not being with your friends... all against the backdrop of looking for some kind of grace, while down the street, they’re tearing the old church down.

His songs and records have received widespread critical acclaim over the years; of his last record with The Trouble With Sweeney, Fishtown Briefcase. Sweeney’s songwriting draws inspiration from sources as disparate as 1970s Philly nightlife folklore and Denis Johnson’s The Incognito Lounge. In their new songs, chiming guitars, classic rock sax solos and rainy bedroom Velvet Underground listening sessions all blend together. In these songs are little stories of triumph over dirty circumstance and grace under pressure, with the friendship of an urban family “street band” woven throughout.

Joey’s sharing “And Soon” the lead single from Catholic School that features Renée LoBue of Elk City on vocals (whose new album Everybody's Insecure is out now on Bar/None). Sweeney wanted to write something beautiful and hopeful about the experience of coming out of loss, saying “I liked the idea that ghosts could turn friendly, and that in grief you could have the kind of grace that Sandy Denny has on Who Knows Where The Time Goes? (which is referenced in the song)."
  FACEBOOK.

The musical arrangement is thoughtful and beautifully laid out, giving distinction to each instrument as they shine through with style. 'And Soon' is a gently flowing song, where the vocals and duet are peaceful and dreamy, an alt rocker of sorts, this is music of real class.

Wojtek the bear - strong suit.

Background - Scottish Fiction Records are proud to present strong suit; the third single to be taken from Glasgow indie four piece wojtek the bear's debut album a talent for being unreasonable.

Previous singles made out of maps and oil & water have both received airplay from the likes of Roddy Hart and Janice Forsyth on BBC Radio Scotland, Tom Robinson on BBC 6Music, and Amazing Radio.

strong suit is a stripped back duet weaving the tale of a warring couple trading lyrical blows and features an incredible vocal performance from the band's Scottish Fiction label-mate Annie Booth.  Of the lyrics lead singer Tam Killean describes the track as being "probably the most viscerally honest thing I've ever written.  I think we've all been in fights or arguments in relationships before where if we were to stop for even just a second we'd realise how pointless or unproductive it was.  I'd wanted to write an old style country & western duet for a while now and when we got Annie in to work with us we knew we had something special."

strong suit is released digitally on 27th July 2018 via Scottish Fiction Records. TWITTER.

We shared 'oil & water' back in May and are really pleased to be able to feature the third single 'strong suit' ahead of the bands debut album release. The band have developed a consistently distinct and attractive sound, that lingers somewhere between indie and alt rock. The vocals and harmonies are notable, there is a sense of earnest intent that adds a level of drama, and the music might be slightly understated, yet it remains fabulous.

Jamie Lynn Vessels - wojtek the bear - Rue Snider

Jamie Lynn Vessels - Dear Love.

Background - "Storm Coming" is Jamie Lynn Vessels' new blues-rock album, released last month. Jamie Lynn Vessels is a soulful rock and blues artist with her roots in songwriting. Likened to Bonnie Raitt and Sheryl Crow, this six-foot tall rocker will captivate the audience and command the stage as a solo act or with her full band. She has embraced New Orleans as her musical hometown, and the city has done her the same, affording her the opportunity to add grit and soul to her style and music.

No matter where JLV travels and plays, there is something undeniable about her songs and musical appeal... whatever your taste, Jamie's voice and presence will capture you. Her music is soulful, bluesy, filled with intricate lyrics and beautiful stories, and delivers a stunningly intoxicating ride of rock 'n' roll.

Jamie has had the opportunity to play with local celebrities at Jazz Fest, French Quarter Fest, and the Mahalia Jackson Theatre. Jamie has opened for Dilana, Roxie Watson, Grayson Capps, and others. She has played around the country and has regular solo and full band shows in and around the Crescent City.

Jamie’s first full-length album “Home” and EP were released in 2013. Her new all-original sophomore album was released April 19th, 2018, featuring Cranston Clements (Cyril Neville, Boz Scaggs, Irma Thomas, Twangorama), David Brouillette (Gal Holiday and the Honky Tonk Revue, Vivaz!, Kyper, Dick Deluxe, Voodoo Grove), Sam Shahin (Naughty Professor), and other New Orleans locals as guest musicians, engineers, and artists. Blues-rock and songwriting are just the beginning. Jamie's live performances and her raw, soulful sound have evolved since her start in live music in 2012. It's not just a concert -- It's an experience. WEBSITE.

With fourteen tracks 'Storm Coming' is packed full of some refined blues rock material. The moods and momentum vary along the way, sometimes full on with rock energy, other times more restrained and sensitive. 'Dear Love' is a more blues ballad orientated piece, which helps showcase Jamie Lynn Vessels vocals well, however expect a whole load more in terms of variety and you can be sure the musicianship is consistently high in calibre.

Wojtek the bear - oil & water.

Background - Scottish Fiction Records are proud to present oil & water; the second single from Glasgow indie four piece wojtek the bear's forthcoming album a talent for being unreasonable.

Following on from the success of their maiden EP, wojtek the bear tucked themselves away to work with in-demand producer Chris McCrory (Catholic Action) to record a talent for being unreasonable at Shady Lane Studios in late 2017.

oil & water deftly mixes pointed percussion with gentle instrumentation as lead single Tam Killean calmly broods that "one's too many, but a hundred's never enough."  Of the lyrics, Killean describes the track as being a song about addiction, be that to something or someone.  "I think we all have those low-level addictions that we probably don't even realise are there so it's about sort of being aware of what you're doing whilst also feeling like you can't actually, or maybe don't want to, stop it."

oil & water is out now digitally via Scottish Fiction Records. A talent for being unreasonable will be released on limited edition blue vinyl and digitally on 25th May 2018 via Scottish Fiction Records. TWITTER.

You have to go back to June 2016 for Beehive Candy's only other feature for wojtek the bear, that said as soon as we received the new song 'oil & water,' I remembered them and had a feeling, it would be a good one. Last time around we had a "breezy indie pop" piece, the new song is a little more towards alt rock, that said the melodic vibes are there and the hooks gently dig in deep.

Rue Snider - Experiment In Love.

Background - Timeless and genre-bending singer songwriter Rue Snider releases "Experiment In Love", the second single off of his forthcoming record, City Living. The track follows the sucess of the first single off of the album, "Vamonos."

Of "Experiment in Love" Rue valiantly proclaims, "Experiment In Love is one of several songs on my forthcoming record City Living that deal with heartbreak, loss, and obsession. The record is a snap shot of life in New York in the mid 2000s and that picture would be incomplete without presenting a good bit of sadness. New York City is a magical place that affords boundless opportunity but very often everyone is moving so fast that fundamental human needs get ignored or pushed aside. It can wreak havoc on one's emotions and mind. Heartbreak and loss are part of the experience of being alive and they are especially part of the experience of living in New York where ambition often trumps love."

Heavily influenced by the sounds of the 80s, from Cyndi Lauper to R.E.M, Rue's new album City Living presents an aural experience of the downtown Manhattan scene in the mid-2000s brought to living color in 2018. Rue's lyrics are informed more often that not by his personal life experiences. Broken Window, released in 2016, speaks of his journey to sobriety - a time defined by a hunger for consciousness and by dramatic emotional battles. City Living now serves as the musical prequel to Broken Window. A more upbeat record, City Living is colored by the sometimes blissful ignorance of living life unintentionally before waking up to an awareness of the reckoning and difficult choices that are ahead. We featured the first single 'Vamonos' just a month ago, and hot on it's heels is the second single 'Experiment In Love'. Rue Snider crafts some excellent music, his attention to detail is equally matched by his interpretation of human experiences, and turned out as engaging and honest musical journeys. Fresh and always intriguing, his genre sliding music is proving to be very addictive.

Friday Five: Wojtek the bear - Twin Graves - Tiergarten - Brooklyn Doran - Ranch Ghost

Wojtek the bear - Dead from the waist up.

Background promo - Glasgow four piece wojtek the bear release their debut single “dead from the waistup” on 17th June. Their debut offering marries quintessential indie pop songwriting with melodies and hooks as big as mountains.

The single was recorded and produced by Chris McCrory of band catholic action and is accompanied by a video shot in the wilds of South Lanarkshire by Beth Chalmers whose recent clients include Low and Martha Ffion.

The band will be playing a number of shows in the coming months to support the release including a launch gig on 16th June at Govanill Baths in Glasgow and 19th August at DF Concerts catapult showcase at the Record Factory in Glasgow.

'Dead from the waist up' is my introduction to Wojtek The Bear. It's a breezy indie pop song and for me it's just a delight. Catchy and with lyrics worth taking in, it's a fine way to get to know a bands music.

Twin Graves - Strife.

Background promo - After emerging last year with debut EP ‘Walk In Circles’ and singles ‘Love You To Death’ & ‘No Future’, Irish/Blackpool duo Twin Graves return with brand new single ‘Strife’ which will impact 17th June.

‘Strife’ is taken from the bands forthcoming second EP ‘Exiled’, produced by Matt Peel (Eagulls, Bad Breeding) and recorded at The Nave studios in Leeds. ‘Strife’ is about reaching a crossroad in life and questioning the choices in front of you but ultimately following your heart rather than head. ‘Strife’ captures the post punk attitude of previous releases but also nods to the avant-garde pop sounds of bands such as Talking Heads.

Twin Graves are: Jeremy Aris Polychronopoulos (vocals/guitar) Zarah Lawless (vocals/bass/synth).

The duo Twin Graves create quite a powerful sound with the new song 'Strife'. Vocals are really good and a key feature, as the song develops they are slowly engulfed by the ever growing soundtrack.

Tiergarten - Der Zorn Gottes.

Background promo - It was late 2013, when Mats Rybø, a songwriter for the girls in the famous band Katzenjammer started to get serious attention for forming the band Tiergarten. His delicate vocals may garner much of the attention but the electronic sound wrapped in an effortless power-perormance is what unifies the sound's entirety.

Tiergarten has refined and perfected their style into a new sound that they feel encapsulates the essence of pop music with a rock dynamic, alternating between moments full of drama and a delightful energy. The Oslo based band members are: Mats Rybø, Anne Marit Bergheim, Odd Kristian Svedal, Stian Sveen and Trine Skullestad Hølland.

The first single, "Der Zorn Gottes", is driven by the two lead vocals and its perfectly balanced synths. The topic concerns megalomaniacs, the driven and twisted individuals who think they act on behalf of higher powers. It fuels a passion within the person that is simultaneously righteous and reviled, a dangerous dichotomy that plays perfectly into the strengths on display within the song.

According to the band 'Der Zorn Gottes' "concerns the megalomaniacs, the angry and twisted avengers who think they act on behalf of higher powers". They then add that "catchy synth pop" follows. Well I completely agree with the song being catchy, in fact it's something of an epic. Very impressive!

Brooklyn Doran - Paper Wings.

Background from Brooklyn - “Paper Wings” is the first single from my forthcoming album “These Paper Wings”. The song began as a poem that I wrote several years ago, that I revisited when writing for the album.

The single and the album were recorded over 2015 and 2016 at Catherine North Studios in Hamilton Ontario. Produced, mixed and recorded by Dan Hosh (City and Colour, Arkells, Rose Cousins) and mastered by Elliott Brood's Stephen Pitkin at Modest Heights Recording.

The track tells the story of Icarus, but is told from the perspective of the sun. I feel like this song, while still in the realm of indie-folk is a truer representation of where I feel I am musically right now.

A big part of the process for me is creating a conversation through music. And it's something I am incredibly interested in. It's one of the main reasons that I make music and put it out into the world. 'These Paper Wings' is set for release in September 2016.

'Paper Wings' is a gentle song, that demonstrates just what a really fine voice Brooklyn Doran has. Musically it's a quite laid back, acoustic piece, just right and in all a delightful song.

Ranch Ghost - Ragged Mile.

Background promo - Lookin was recorded almost entirely live and produced by Mitch Jones (Fly Golden Eagle, Thunderbitch, Majestico) at his studio in East Nashville. This album was Ranch Ghost's first endeavor into recording the sonic incarnation of each of its member's thoughts, inspirations, and creative energy. The band has been audibly molded by the vibrations of Link Wray and Captain Beefheart's Magic Band, while the influence of Nina Simone, Hank Williams, and Miles Davis remains slightly obscured underneath the murky surface.

Jones helped bring forth into the world a musical apparition, simultaneously bearing the primal growl of The Velvet Underground and the punctured speaker cones of The Kinks. Deliberately injected within this chaos, there lies the necessary space for singer Joshua Meador’s prose to be able to stand comfortably, but with canines bared.

Upcoming Ranch Ghost Tour Dates:

6/18 - Nashville, TN - The East Room (album release show, w/ Clear Plastic Masks and Sun Seeker)
7/15 - Memphis, TN - Mud Island Amphitheater (w/ Alabama Shakes).

There's plenty of energy and rock'n'roll vibes in 'Ragged Mile' a song that thumps along, taking the listener with it. The band do indeed have a live feel about them, and the music is all the richer for that.
