Sohodolls - The Gilhooly's - The Hengles - Gillie

Sohodolls - Bad.

London's influential electro-rockers Sohodolls are back! After being out of the limelight for more than a decade, a globally enforced lockdown revived one of their classics ‘Bang Bang Bang Bang’ into an unexpected viral TikTok hit among the Gen Z glitterati, which has inspired the band to reform and release some stunning new music.

Following last month’s unveiling of new track ‘Letter To My Ex (Thank You, Goodbye)’, new single ‘Bad’ sees Maya Von Doll giving advice to her younger self on rebelling against gender specific advice:

“I regret not trusting my instinct to stand up for myself. So, this song is about understanding and accepting that fight instinct. About standing up for yourself and rejecting advice that I think is mostly given to young women in my line of work. You shouldn’t always act on it, but you shouldn’t deny its existence. We are all animals - females included!”, she further explains.

‘I can be good and sometimes clever, but when I’m bad I’m so much better’, is the seductive refrain of this stomping rock banger, which embeds catchy hooks under a thick gloss of gothic riffs. Pounding drums, whirring synths and fuzzy guitars melt into an infectious sludge earworm for all of us out there who are inherently bad!

“It took me years to realise I was being walked all over by bigger fish in the music industry. For example, as a burgeoning songwriter writing for other artists, I was given unfair deals that my then management justified as a way of getting on the ladder. Looking back, it was total rubbish and it basically amounted to intellectual property theft! I knew at the time that I could have fought for fairness, but I was told over and over again that to do so would give me a reputation of being difficult and I might not get to work with certain labels again.”, she reveals.

The Gilhooly's - The Score.

This is one impressive indie rocker where the band are naturally slick and the vocals exude emotion and add an additional layer of power to the track. The bands promo tells us:

The Ex Cosmic’s Bass Player, James Clifford is now fully entrenched in the Gilhooly’s line up, adding Basslines and Harmonies.

With their old songs gaining attention, praise and Airplay, they have re-emerged from the shadows. Having  signed to Main St Records they released their first Single - STAR  ( No 1 Indy chart) in June 21 and followed up with - WILL GOD FORGIVE - ( No 2 Rock Chart). 

Along with a  new album release in November 21 - G10 - ( No 6 Rock Chart ) and touring Scotland with new songs, It’s been an incredibly busy year for the band. The Fans are back, talking and listening.

Gillie - I ti.

‘i ti’ is a song that announces a new beginning and a new creative chapter for Gillie, an intuitively gifted songwriter, guitarist and producer, Libertino are overjoyed to welcome onto the label. It is the first material the Carmarthenshire born artist has written in the Welsh language and the first song written and recorded after her return to live in Wales after spending her late teens and early twenties in London.

Deeply influenced by place, Gillie blends musically on ‘i ti’  the serenity of the Welsh countryside with the industrial undergrowth of city life, to create something hauntingly serene. Blending gold-flecked guitar loops into a ambient haze, Gillie harnesses the anxieties, stress and struggles that had congregated within her and weaves them into something unapologetic yet inherently intimate.

As Gillie explains: "This song centres around a period in my life where I was looking for a change of direction and hoping to rectify frustrations of feeling overwhelmed and worn out. The rhythm is an attempt to reflect the fast pace of a city life that I was ready to leave, whilst the dreamy vocals reflect escapism, and a yearning for something more. I began writing this track in my last month of living in London, but the song itself came to life and was fully realised once I made the move back to my homeland.

"Some of the lyrics are quite disjointed. It doesn’t so much tell a story as it tries to capture a feeling of making decisions. I (kind of) wrote it as a stream of consciousness and didn’t think too much about the concept. I wanted to capture a feeling without over analysing it. The first verse touches on how I often feel that I am pointlessly shouting into the ether, trying to be heard, whilst I slowly get older, collecting defects along the way. The second verse sees me trying to leave some of these thoughts behind, looking toward a new start as things gently begin to fall into place.

Alex Amor - The Hengles - Wy - Carmody

Alex Amor - Colour Me.

Up-and-coming London-based, Glaswegian indie-pop artist Alex Amor releases her new single "Colour Me" on UK Indie label Young Poet. Fresh off the road after supporting Thomas Headon on his recent UK tour, Alex Amor teamed up with Mack Jamieson and Gianluca Buccellati who produced “Colour Me”, the latter known for his work on Arlo Parks' Grammy-nominated album Collapsed In Sunbeams.

Glowing with star quality, Alex Amor finds a delicate balance between indie and dreamlike alt-pop as she gracefully describes the arrival of a special person using a lyrical pallet awash with colour: "Pocket full of sunshine / Need shades to see her / Golden in the day time".

Speaking on the release of “Colour Me”, Alex Amor said: "When you’re in a dark place, life can seem grey, monotonous and stale. But sometimes, all it takes is for one person to come crashing into your life for the world to come back in blazing colour. Falling in love makes the leaves turn greener, the sky bolder and the sun shine brighter. It’s like you’re viewing the world through a saturated lens, where the boring parts of life become not only bearable but enjoyable again with this person by your side."

Hailing from suburban Glasgow, Alex Amor takes an uncompromisingly direct and emotionally honest approach to songwriting, marrying together an alt-pop aesthetic with biographical accounts of her experiences growing up; combining the sincerity of Billie Marten, the versatility of Phoebe Bridgers and the pop sensibilities of Olivia Dean.

Wy - High Score.

Wy are a band strongest at their most vulnerable. The Malmö indie duo, Ebba and Michel Gustafsson Ågren, have showcased their musical skills across three albums, 2017’s Okay, 2019’s Softie and 2021’s Marriage which gained them recognition from KEXP, Line of Best Fit, NBHAP, Tonspion, CLASH and more as well as tours in Germany, Scandinavia and the UK. But what makes them stand out as a band is the raw, brutal emotion they capture in their music. A Wy song at their best sounds like opening it all up, and letting the feelings flow where they will, letting the pain, anger, fear, hope and love steer the song. Those emotions are spun into the band’s skyscaping, cinematic sound, and turned into music that has a force behind it, a power that hits you, even when it's at its softest. High Score is the second song from new EP Something Amazing which is out on all platforms and a limited CD including a six page booklet (which also includes Marriage) on June 17th.

High Score "expresses some sort of catharsis. Letting go of that control and letting things be the way they are. It’s a message for everyone who, like the both of us, have been struggling all their life to conform and fit in."

Something Amazing picks up where Marriage left off, exploring dramatic life changes, including the experience of knowing that there soon will be a third person in the family. It is the second release since signing to Rama Lama Records (Melby, Steve Buscemi's Dreamy Eyes, Chez Ali etc.) and continues the path from last years Marriage, leaving the more produced style of second album Softie behind, it turns to the simpler sound of their earlier work for music that’s rawer and sharper.

Carmody - Trespasser.

London based singer/songwriter Carmody has released her new single "Trespasser", the latest taster of upcoming debut album Imperfect Constellations out 6th July via Young Poet, which will feature collaborations with artists including Alfa Mist, Tom Misch, Conor Albert, and Laura Misch.

Carmody has long been using music as a way to uncover her subconscious, examining the complex web of relationships that surround her. Rich in detail and emotional substance, her music evokes the timelessness of Joni Mitchell and Joan Armatrading while nodding to the modern alt-folk of Laura Marling and Big Thief. In the face of memory and generational grief, Imperfect Constellations is split into four main parts (or 'Constellations') and draws on her own experiences of alternative therapy, entering a world of discovery and recognition.

Co-written with and produced by Young Poet label-mate Conor Albert, "Trespasser" merges captivating folk songwriting with modern production flourishes to stunning effect; written about relationships that leave a lasting imprint on you: "I can’t forgive my mind / summons you at night"

Speaking more on the lyrical meaning behind the track, Carmody said: "It’s about the frustration you feel when your body still remembers, despite the passing of time. Even if you would like to forget them, there is always a constant pull towards their memory. I took this track to Conor Albert who produced it and added some beautiful piano lines that really brought the track to life."

Josienne Clarke - Alphanaut - The Hengles - Lia D'Sau - Tacsidermi

Josienne Clarke - The Collector.

“You’re the collector / You’ll keep me forever / A small unknowable thing / With you as preceptor,” Josienne Clarke sings on new single ‘The Collector’, a song inspired by writer John Fowles' novel of the same name. For her new album A Small Unknowable Thing, due out this Friday, Clarke is flying solo. No label, no musical partner, no producer. For the first time since her early beginnings, Clarke is in complete control of her songwriting, arranging, producing, release schedule and musical direction.

On 'The Collector', Clarke experimented with unusual sounds, marrying earthy folk with cutting industrial noise. Recording the sound of her phone interface via her Cornell amp, Clarke processed it using some Logic pre-sets to make a sound that eventually resembled an angle-grinder. It’s heavy noise grates and cuts, reflecting the horror of the woman’s treatment.  “Having read [Fowles’] book again, I just identified with some of the themes of it. [The protagonist] doesn’t see her as a human being. She has all this power and then none at all, because her’s was a power she’s unable to use for anything; the man’s was always greater. It’s a power that makes you really very vulnerable.”

It’s an experience the vast majority of women making music today can identify with. Despite writing a plethora of critically acclaimed songs, winning a BBC Folk Award, opening for Robert Plant on his European tour, playing prominent slots on some of the UK’s biggest festivals or even taking a leading role in The National Theatre’s revival of Timberlake Wertenbaker’s Our Country’s Good (after being personally chosen by Cerys Matthews no less), Clarke felt daily self-doubt as a result of an industry that variously gas-lit, put-down, questioned and othered. A Small Unknowable Thing is, at least in part, about recognising there are still existing structures to keep women in their place – but it’s also about having the courage to break those structures down too.

After leaving her label, musical partnership and home (Clarke moved to a small village on the outskirts of Glasgow with her husband), she started afresh. Gradually, as she slowly began to write and record once more, the album’s narrative arc emerged and Clarke found herself again. “It’s an empowered narrative, not a weak and vulnerable one,” Clarke says of the album. “It was a conscious decision to walk away from my career as it was and there’s a positive message on this record: there’s a lot of reclaiming the narrative.”

Alphanaut - Shake the Rhythm

Avant-garde Southern Californian music collective, Alphanaut, are back with a dynamic new track. ‘Shake The Rhythm’ follows the release of lead single, ‘Virtual Love,’ along with the announcement of their album out on October 15th. 

As the second single, the bright horn section lends a big band influence, while the pizzicato chorus hook adds a playful pop element. This special album edit features a gradual chorus fade towards the end that’s taken over by a jazzy improv jam session where the musicians let go of traditional song structure and have some fun showing off their chemistry as a band.

Told through Mark Alan’s colorful vocals dripping with TLC, ‘Shake The Rhythm’ is about embracing your individuality and dancing to the beat of your own drum, even when it seems like everything is trying to stifle your shine. 

The uplifting animated video that accompanies the track is by artist, Matt Brown. Staying true to themselves and to the theme of the album, each track tells the stories of fictional characters that embrace their own unique place in the world; even if it is different than those around them.

Lia D'Sau - Bird.

For Lia D’Sau, songwriting is a declaration. The 18-year-old singer-songwriter explores her thoughts on womanhood, relationships and social issues with maturity and curiosity, using music as her toolkit. “Having other people write songs for me seemed daunting, terrible,” says D’Sau. “I’ve been taught to look deeper at the world since I was a child, and I have things I want to say.” 

Born and raised in Tel Aviv, Israel, D’sau grew up listening to her parents’ favorite R&B records, with her father being a former boy band member himself. D’sau began singing at age eight, eventually attending music camp in New York City at age fifteen.

Lia is excited to share her new single, out August 13th. Here's what she had to say about it: "This song means a lot to me, especially after these last 2 years of isolation and feeling trapped: in our homes, our countries, our heads. 

I wrote this song after I came home from watching the sunset at the beach one day, which is something i started doing daily during these times, and I was listening to "good days" by SZA. I think it was the day it came out, and I just felt so free, and alive like I hadn't felt in a long time. This song is meant to be like a breath of fresh air after being stuck in a basement for a year".

Tacsidermi - Ble Pierre.

Tacsidermi are back and how we have missed them! Gwenllian Anthony from the ‘Welsh Music Prize’ winning band Adwaith and multi instrumentalist Matthew Kilgariff have crafted a sublime pop song in ‘Ble Pierre’. Every note played is powerfully evocative of never-ending, carefree summers and romantic escape and wonder.

Tacsidermi with the support of David Newington (Boy Azooga) on drums and mixing by Matthew Evans (KEYS) find a perfect marriage of Jane Birkin / Serge Gainsbourg 60s French pop, Stereolab’s 90s dreaminess and The Happy Mondays, Paul Oakenfold infused Balearic heartbeat.

With Gwenllian’s beautiful restrained vocal delivery set at the centre of the mix the listener falls yet again under Tacsidermi’s spell!

Marriage is the first record since signing to Rama Lama Records (Melby, Steve Buscemi's Dreamy Eyes, Chez Ali etc.) and the  sound of Wy moving forward and backwards at once. Leaving the more produced style of last album Softie behind, it turns to the simpler sound of their earlier work for music that’s rawer and sharper. On both the indie-rock and the pop songs of this album, there’s less between the listener and the heart of the song - this is music that’s very direct, both in theme and sound, with melodies that hit cleanly and leave nothing even trying to hide. It’s the work of a band that have grown into themselves and what they do, and making the strongest songs of their career.

That album, in a way, begins with a wedding. Ebba and Michel have been together since their schooldays, but a couple of years ago they tied the knot. The songs on Marriage have all been made since their wedding, and so in that sense the timing made it a natural title for a record that’s something of a scrapbook from the first two years of that marriage. But there’s also a deeper sense to it. Both in sound and theme, Marriage is more of a conceptual record than their earlier work. Ebba writes the band’s lyrics, and on the previous albums her themes were specific to her. But on this album, their relationship is at the heart of the songs. 

The lyrics have come from the experiences they’ve shared together, which they’ve then worked together into what they want to say, to each other and to everyone else.  “I have always written the lyrics”, says Ebba. “But this time they feel like our lyrics, and not just my diary set to our music. We've talked a lot with each other about what we want to say. About who we are and where we can find our place in the world. The title has been in place since we started, and that was because a lot of the songs revolved around our relationship since we got married. Not so much the relationship between us, but more about the internal conflicts that appear when you’re in a long-term, safe relationship, where you’re really sure about each other, but you’re not sure about yourself”.

The journey to the record has been a difficult one. The band started work on Marriage not intending to make an album. They went into the studio with the idea of making an EP, wrote some songs, but couldn’t quite nail what they were going for - the songs didn’t quite feel right together. So they went into overdrive, wrote a bunch more songs, and suddenly found themselves with over 20, and within those 20 what they realised was an album.

Carly Opacic - Luna.

From Carly - A little bit about my music and the song: This is a song on a two part album called Luna. The first part of the two part album is about a break up and the second part of the album to come is about finding yourself again. This specific song is a precursor to the break up songs that are in the rest of the album as it explains the break up while its happening. 

I was influenced by a poem about a break up that explained it with space and then another quote about how the sun sees your body, but the moon sees your soul. I resonated with this and have always been obsessed with the moon so it just clicked perfectly.

A little bit about myself, I originate from Orange County, California but moved to Nashville 6 years ago to pursue music. Since then I have found my sound. I released an EP in 2016 when I was still trying to find myself that is more folk. In 2019, I released a single finally finding my sound. In 2020, I released 3 more singles and am now finally releasing part of the album that I have been working on for 3 years. 

I try to live as authentically as possible every day and try to portray that through my music. My producer's name is Brandon Mingo and he puts the world behind every one of my songs that you hear. I don't know what I would do without him.

Big Little Lions - Never Mind The Weather.

Big Little Lions have been described as ‘a blissful marriage of new folk and
sophisticated pop’. Prolific songwriting, infectious folk-pop style, and an
o ffbeat, memorable live show. This award winning duo consists of Helen Austin
and Paul Otten who, despite living thousands of miles apart, have found a way
to connect and create music together. Despite being in two di fferent countries
they have found common ground to share their message.

Call it destiny, or call it fate, call it a necessary progression for these modern
times. Helen lives in British Columbia, Canada and Paul lives in Cincinnati, OH.
But the distance provides the necessity to create in a new way. Using
technology as their ally and their di fferences as their strength.

Their monthy single releases are their way of getting through this pandemic
while all the usual album cyle release plans don’t make sense anymore. Their
music is jam-packed with emotion and tight harmonies, the sound of two
people working side-by-side.

Joem - Copper Ground.

Johanna Mäkilä-Manninen, aka JOEM, born in 1994, is an independent artist, musician and an English BA graduate. Starting her musical journey as a saxophone player, she has graduated from Sibelius upper secondary school (2013), as well as from Pop & Jazz Conservatory (2018) in Helsinki. During her studies in the Conservatory and University of Helsinki, Joem slowly transitioned from saxophone to singing and songwriting due to a long period of chronic neuropathic pain in the arms. Living with physical pain and the eventual depression led to her childhood dream of being a music maker and singer.

In 2017, after gigging as a saxophonist and singing in a local church, Joem started slowly but surely taking steps towards her own artistry. Thus far the journey has included writing and releasing her own songs, making two music videos, gigging around Helsinki with her band, as well as winning New York-based celebrity vocal coach Cari Cole’s biannual singing competition with her single “Naive Heart” in August, 2019. This opened a door for her to be coached by Cari via Zoom, and to participate in a songwriting circle with other artists.

At the moment she works part-time as a life auxiliary/ personal assistant for seniors, and is working on her new releases for 2021 while living with her husband in Helsinki. Her goal is to create a unique path as an artist and a creative entrepreneur.

Melissa Carper - Makin' Memories.

Melissa Carper the singer/songwriter/upright bassist releases "Makin' Memories," today. It's the first single from her forthcoming LP Daddy's Country Gold (out on March 19). 

Ever the wanderer, Melissa started performing at age 12 with her family's band in Nebraska, considers Arkansas a touchstone, and has made her home in (and busked her way through) New York City, New Orleans, Austin, Nashville, and now she's back in Austin for a spell. She is a member of bands like Sad Daddy, The Carper Family, and has a duo with her girlfriend Rebecca Patek called Buffalo Gals.

The album was co-produced by Time Jumpers bassist Dennis Crouch along with Andrija Tokic, recorded at Andrija's studio The Bomb Shelter here in Nashville, and features guests like Sierra Ferrell, Brennen Leigh, Lloyd Green, and more. It's a collection of jazz-infused western swing and old-time country gems, real music about real life from a real gal, for folks who are looking for the real thing.

Last year The Hengles have taken the next step: writing their own repertoire making pure melodic jingle-jangle Hengle rock with a twist, taking you on a trip down memory lane of more than 50 years of popular music history and blending this into their own style.

Fire In The Rain is the title of the 8th single of The Hengles. It was originally set to be released this June. However, the COVID-19 restrictions turned all that upside-down.

During the lockdown earlier this year, The Hengles released a ‘home version’ of a future new single on their YouTube-channel (let’s save that story for later!), but they also took the opportunity to strip down, edit, re-record, basically reinvent the song Fire In The Rain, to come up with an even better recording than they already had! We all need that beacon of light to guide us through difficult and sometimes perilous times. Especially now! So, if you ever asked yourself how to start a Fire In The Rain, well here it is!

Astrid Cordes - Portrait.

Since 2014 Astrid Cordes has been known as one of the two vocals in the Danish duo Shy shy shy. Now she has put the sweet indie pop aside to make room for a new solo release which points in a more gritty and unpolished direction.

”I was lucky enough to write and put out music with one of my dearest friends through Shy shy shy for a long time, but after shaping everything to fit into that frame I really felt like making something where I could put myself more on the line and be a bit more risky. I've tried to keep a curious approach to my own voice and musicality and have allowed myself to dive into more personal subjects than in the past.”

The songs are still steered by Cordes' charismatic voice and talent for telling stories, but is set in a darker, more guitar driven, mature and uncompromising environment. There is a another depth and a pressing intensity in these new tracks. The lyrics appear honest and direct, revolving around the challenges of an existence overflowing with expectations of what and who we are.

The new music has come to live in close cooperation with producer Morten Søgaard Andersen and was later mixed by Brian Batz and mastered by Brian Mørk during the spring of 2020. The same constellation Astrid Cordes used with Shy shy shy for their last release the EP ”Gloss” from 2019, which was made for the widely acclaimed Danish TV-series ”DOGGYSTYLE”. Before “Gloss” they released the EP ”Love Songs” in 2015 and the album ”Make Up” in 2018.

They had a solid foothold on the indie scene playing several tours in Denmark and festivals like SPOT festival (DK), MS Dockville (DE) and Roskilde festival (DK). The headline of their last review written by the music magazine GAFFA wrote ”Shy shy shy writes their talent and musical capability in neon” and testifies that performing live has always been and will continued to be an essential part of Cordes' career.

Mines Falls - Red Moon Car Wreck.

We are pleased to share the new track from Mines Falls, a duo of brothers Carson & Erik Lund, based in L.A, who make luxurious and moody pop music. Intricate production, a great synthesis of electronics and songwriting.

Here's a quote about the track from songwriter Carson Lund: I had been traveling quite a bit for my job when I wrote this song, touching on all corners of the country, finding myself in quiet towns I’d never heard of before, and not communicating with family and friends for long stretches.

I crave this isolation and independence, but it also distances me from people, and “Red Moon, Car Wreck” attempts to connect who I’ve become with who I was as a child. Life is a series of comings and goings, but this song is about trying to stay in one place.

Charlie Nieland's new single and video for the song Pawns, is part response to The Bushwick Book Club's celebration of Jeff VanderMeer's new A Peculiar Peril. Part response to being a captive audient to dissolution, disintegration, confinement, mysticism and megalomania.

Charlie Nieland has evolved a seamless mix of production, songwriting, musicianship and engineering most notably with Lusterlit with Susan Hwang, Soozee Hwang and The Relastics, Ronan Conroy, Her Vanished Grace, Oh Halo, with the film scoring collective Emboznik and with the production team Super Buddha with Barb Morrison.

Charlie has worked with Rachelle Garniez, John S. Hall, Palmyra Delran, Scissor Sisters, Rufus Wainwright, Debbie Harry (on her 2007 album NECESSARY EVIL, which he co wrote and produced), Blondie (co producing and writing three songs for their 2011 release THE PANIC OF GIRLS) and has scored the films THE SAFETY OF OBJECTS (starring Glen Close) and the documentary NY77: THE COOLEST YEAR IN HELL.

Charlie's breadth of skills continues to grow, with mastery of many musical instruments, songwriting, arranging, video directing and all facets of modern recording technology. Most importantly he has the special ability to connect with and motivate the wide variety of artists that he works with. He specializes in bringing out atmosphere and emotion with his production to make musical cinema.

Charlie was awarded a Gold record (UK) for his production work on Blondie's GREATEST HITS SIGHT & SOUND and achieved a Top 10 Billboard Dance Chart Position with Debbie Harry's single "Two Times Blue", which he co-wrote and produced.

Remington Super 60 - New E.P.

We have a brand new 6 track EP from Norwegian indie-band Remington super 60 simply entitled 'New EP' which has been released today (29th of January 2020).

Remington super 60 is an indie pop group hailing from the town Fredrikstad in Norway. It was founded by the group's songwriter and bedroom producer Christoffer Schou late 1998. Originally set up as a Casio pop band (listen to the first album pling 2001 and you see what I mean) the sound has gone back and forward but always been inspired by Christoffer's musical heroes Burt Bacharach, Brian Wilson, Velvet Underground as well as newer bands such as Stereolab, High Llamas, Cornelius, and Yo La Tengo & Eggstone.

The band has released several albums, EPs on various indie labels around the world, and appeared on numerous compilation albums since it's early start. The new material is released on Christoffer's own label Café Superstar Recordings.

Remington super 60 2020 consists mainly of: Christoffer Schou & Elisabeth Thorsen with a little help from long time collobarator Magnus Abelsen.

Cayley Thomas - Blue Jean Baby.

Cayley Thomas is a singer, guitarist and songwriter from Edmonton, Alberta whose natural affinity for constructing catchy melodies reveals her striking vocal range and character. Under a delirious guise of simplicity, she weaves sensitive eccentricities and cathartic declarations into her own brand of unique, knowledgeable pop.

Cayley’s upcoming album ‘How Else Can I Tell You?’ is a collection of songs that reflect upon a period of subconscious overwhelm and the subsequent shift into conscious thought and awareness. Recorded between Edmonton and Toronto, the album deliberately combines Hi-Fi studio production and Lo-Fi living room charm.

‘How Else Can I Tell You?’ is fresh enough for modern indie rock ears to find familiar, with spells of synth and its modern production, all the while drawing on the fuzzy raw warmth of our favourite sounds from mid-century rock and soul. Tara Vern - Girl With Flashing Eyes.

Following hot on the tale of her album Feverlurden, Tara Vern has released righteous new single Girl With The Flashing Eyes.

Girl with Flashing Eyes is the lovechild of Pat Benatar and Foo Fighters. Powerful guitar hooks, an 80s aesthetic and demented drumming. With a double hooked chorus and menacing yet plaintive verses, this single is a thank-you letter immortalised in song.

In September 2019 Tara bunkered down in Zen Studios, Sydney, to record her first solo album Feverlurden with engineer Geoff Lee and session drummer Miles Thomas. The album was mastered by Steve Smart at Studios 301, Sydney. Tara’s goal was to create rock you can dance to. With a single guitar track, a single drum track, and single bass track, the music is raw, stripped back, immediate and danceable.

Tara was the singer/guitarist/songwriter in early noughties Sydney band Guddling, which received praise from radio and print for “dark-edged pop melodies, emotive hooks and sorrowful female harmonies” the group which split when various members moved abroad in 2002. After spending several years in the wilderness honing her hunting skills and dallying in electronic music as Noot Records, she has returned to the thing she loves best - Rocking out on the guitar.

Upon a tumult of drums and a ringing two-note-tap to your forehead, Girl With The Flashing Eyes gets your attention and points your gaze towards a future of scuzzy riffs and cheeky twists. Tara Vern a rocker not content to rest.

The Hengles first appeared here just three months back when we described their music as melodic and refined pop. The new song entitled 'Those Who Stay Behind' is cut from the same cloth, this band clearly know how to create gorgeous pop.

Tim Holehouse shares 'Aveiro' accompanied by a video. His vocals are wonderfully distinct and the musical arrangement and harmonies make this an outstanding alt country song.

It's a month to the day since we first featured Miriam Clancy with the song 'The Bells' from her keenly awaited 'Astronomy' album. The follow up track 'The Sound' is a lush hook filled piece with synths, a distinct drum beat and smooth melodic vocals collectively working wonders.

Genre defying and beautiful, the new song 'Nudes' by Beija Flo really does up the creative stakes. Personal and passionate, I could easily play this song to often, but it's one to make last, until she surprises us again, something I feel Beija is rather good at.

If your looking for a song to "follow that" in terms of creativity then Richard James Simpson has given us 'The Giver' which mixes a computerised voice with a storm of background sounds, as the conventions of AI are rightly challenged and all in just over a couple of minutes.

Tim Holehouse - Aveiro.

Making a real departure from Tim Holehouse's normal material of mutant delta blues, Come is a more alternative country feeling album.

Recorded with a string trio, pedal steel guitar and various instruments at Silent City Studio with Robert Hobson - who is known for producing more harsh albums including those of black metal band A Forest of Stars (two of whom appear on this record) - over August 2017. It's a real departure and adventure into new sonic territories for all parties involved.

The album was written over a 5 year period, initial demos started when Tim was writing previous albums Odd/Even and Hail. These were then sculpted over the next 5 years with arrangements and further demos. It was a real labour of love to make this album as perfect as possible, with maybe a little look back to earlier album From The Dawn Chorus to make sure it was not rushed. Patience paid off.

Those who have heard the album in early play backs have drawn comparisons to The National, Leonard Cohen, Smog, Lambchop, Bonnie Prince Billy (who the song Prince of the Palace is tribute to) and, perhaps rather unusually, Tony Bennett. Almost narrated stories unravel through string-laden and various sounding pieces.

Come was recorded during two weeks by Tim Holehouse and Robert Hobson. Tim lived in the studio, sleeping on the studio's couch or floor when his brain would allow him to sleep. The album features Katie Stone (violin and backing vocals) and Rick Blakelock (drums) from A Forest of Stars, Tim Loud (double bass) from Bootscraper and also a former solo touring tour mate, virtuoso violin player Kieran O’Malley from Spirit of John. Florence Fawcette provided some lovely cello lines, James William Boston played some wonderful piano on it and last but not least the amazing Benjamin William Pike provided pedal steel guitar.

Tim Holehouse was born in Dorchester and raised in Portsmouth. Having graduated from the University of Plymouth with an honours degree in music (despite not actually being able to read score) Tim has spent the last 13 years pretty much full time on the road playing 250-300 shows a year touring not only in Europe but all round the world. Drawing inspiration from many sources and styles of music he never likes to be typecast.

Miriam Clancy - The Sound.

New Zealand-bred, NY and PA-based singer/songwriter Miriam Clancy released a video for "The Sound," the second single from her upcoming LP, Astronomy.

"You might feel transported elsewhere," American Pancake writer Robb Donker exclaimed about the single. "Miriam Clancy's delicious and emotional aesthetic married with deep cut bass and drum grooves and dreamy synths will most certainly move you."

Astronomy is Clancy's first official full-length album stateside, but serves as a reintroduction and a reinvention to her predominantly New Zealander fanbase, who last heard Miriam on her 2009 LP, Magnetic. Astronomy's ten songs represent a cathartic fork in the road borne out of existential crisis, including her and her four children's move to the US earlier this decade.

Crafted over several years of sessions in New York City with producer Chris Coady (Beach House, Yeah Yeah Yeahs), the album brings massive changes to Clancy's sound, specifically swooning electric guitars, wurlitzers, early 90’s drum machines and analogue synths. Astronomy is out on September 27th.

Beija Flo - Nudes.

Beija Flo returns with thoughtful and provocative new single ‘Nudes’ on 17th September. She plays The Waiting Room in London on 4th October.

A true polymath, Beija Flo, has crafted her own universe, pulling together elements of activism, performance art and education. Impossible to pin down, her sound is one that encompasses everything from open hearted balladry to acerbic punk. Tackling everything from love and relationships through to mental and sexual health, she is truly an artist for our times, juxtaposing her darkest moments against those of enduring hope.

Telling her story through her songs, she lets us into her world and teaches us not to be fearless, but to wear our insecurities as warpaint: to accept our differences, embrace our similarities and to live our lives as true and as vibrant as possible. To witness Beija Flo live is an unforgettable experience. Songs, performance and costumes aside she provokes a conversation that many would shy away from. Having discovered she was born with MRKH Syndrome when she was in her late teens, and as a young woman, coming to terms with the fact that there was little in the way of support or even relevant information to help her come to terms with how the condition would affect her: Beija Flo’s reality is weaved through music and the narrative she shares with an ever growing audience.

‘Nudes’ is the third song to be released by Beija Flo. It follows previous singles ‘One of Those Things’ and ‘Mary’, two polar-opposite sides of the artist. This new offering strips back the stage paint and leotards, allowing Beija Flo to explore the relationship she has with her body. Despite how we feel about ourselves, ‘Nudes’ serves as a reminder that when everyone leaves, our body is still there, even if we feel let down by it, it is still our constant companion.

An Essex-native, Beija Flo now calls Liverpool her home. Involved in lots of happenings  in the burgeoning arts scene, she is a regular life-model, part of the Eggy Records fold of exciting bands and artists, a member of performing arts collective The Secret Circus and recently did her first spoken word performance at the Everyman Theatre as part of Violette’s ‘Word’ (Previous performers include Selena Godden and Emma Warren) Spontaneous and with an undying lust for creative output, it’s impossible to say what she’ll turn her hand to next.

Accompanied by poetry along with self-portrait photography and illustrations, ‘Nudes’ allows Beija Flo to showcase her artistry in different ways. No one-trick-pony: this new single can only whet our appetites for what is to come.

Richard James Simpson - The Giver.

Richard James Simpson is the brother of the late Rock Halsey from the infamous L.A. punk band Rock Bottom and The Spys (which included Ygarr Ygarrist of Zolar X); and son of actress Renate Huy. Former member of alternative band Teardrain, Simpson released his debut solo album 'Sweet Birds of Youth' in 2017, getting excellent feedback on international music press.

"The Giver" is the eleventh song off of Richard James Simpson's album "Deep Dream." It begins with a computer speaking to a docile public the words,"Your child needs rest. Your child needs you to rise," as if educating them on the obvious. It continues to exhort human beings to re-examine their current path.

 We have become deluged by A.I. and apathy, cut off from nature and the divine  - and hence one another. In this hyper-surveilled society of wire tapping, voice-sniffing technology, and bio-metrics, the public takes its marching orders from the almighty technocracy. The song reveals philanthropy as more of an an inanimate object than action, in a world in which the suffering of others is seen as something to be viewed in the abstract.

We are faced with individuals who congratulate themselves for just thinking about suffering, instead of actually working to eradicate it. The computer continues with its surreal soliloquy about televised wrong pearls, heatwaves and vulture vanity shows. In the end, it mentions an unknown entity called The Giver. We are told that this world is not ready for The Giver, that they seem to want can't instead of can, and they are not ready for The Giver... they are not ready for the diamonds to turn into dust. In this parable, truth is the hardest pill to swallow. Mala tempora currunt, these are wicked times
