Vanessa Gimenez - Miss Tess - Roddy Colmer - Johnathan Pushkar

Vanessa Gimenez - Doing Better.

Vanessa Gimenez releases her second single "Doing Better" and announces the release of her debut EP 'Make It Rain', out August 12th.

Vanessa Gimenez doesn’t so much write songs as conjure dreamscapes for listeners to lose themselves in. It’s a talent she began honing while fronting Bristol-band Swimming Girls - racking up millions of streams along with triumphant turns at Glastonbury and at Shepherd’s Bush Empire. It’s only since going solo that Gimenez has begun to realise the true scope of her creative potential.

New single "Doing Better" finds her daring to look back at difficult personal experiences. Produced and mixed by David Wrench (Arlo Parks, Jamie xx, Georgia), and co-written with Toby Scott and Swimming Girls-keyboardist Roo Primrose – the track deals with the dissolution of a romantic relationship and the mind games lovers play in an attempt to one-up one another. "Doing Better" further wounds with its references to domestic abuse, most notably in lines like, 'So I tell you about my mother, and how she’s still trying to recover.’

These painful recollections arrive cocooned by clipped beats, slow-burning synth lines and semi-whispered harmonies, serving to catapult Gimenez into the same league as Lorde, as a master of immersive but, at times, brutally frank dream-pop.

On the new song, Gimenez said: "‘Doing Better’ is a post breakup song at its core. But the message can be applied to many things in today’s society. I feel like a lot of people feel the need to ‘one-up’ each other, probably because of things like social media toxicity. It is really funny though when you remove yourself from it and just observe people being weird."

Miss Tess - Real Change.

When most people think of defiant music, they think of punk rock or outlaw country. But defying genres while transcending eras and resisting clichés is hard to pin down when it comes to artistry—unless you’re talking about Miss Tess, who does all of that and more. Swinging for the fences and from the branches of jazz, country, blues and old school rock and roll, she employs all of her influences and talents while cleverly taking standard perspectives and ideas—like the definition of a love song—to task.

On the heels of her acclaimed 2020 LP The Moon Is An Ashtray (featured at Billboard, Rolling Stone Country, No Depression, Wide Open Country, and more), Miss Tess will unveil new single “Real Change” on July 2nd. Just in time for Independence Day, “Real Change” features guest vocalists Lindsay Lous and Rachael Davis, and was was written with Maya de Vitry, a month or two after the death of George Floyd. The goal was not to preach, but rather to spread a humble message of hope and unity. As we emerge from this dark period of time, Miss Tess hopes that we continue practicing the power of love and awareness toward our fellow humans.

“The world will never be perfect, but we have to keep trying, and insisting that real change is possible. Of all the sadness and loss already experienced through the onset of a global pandemic, I thought maybe it all happened for a reason. Most of our working systems came to a standstill for the first time in recent history, and the world had time to listen, watch, and react,” she explains.

Roddy Colmer - Wrapped Up In You.

With a dreamy soundscape and lonesome vocals, Roddy Colmer’s new single “Wrapped Up In You” draws you in with its story and then lets you drift away on a melodic sea.

The lyrics deal with the feelings of unrequited love, taking the perspective of an admirer questioning if their feelings will be reciprocated.

The song reached #2 on the iTunes Singer/Songwriter Chart and follows Colmer’s 2020 single “White Little Lights” which was featured on SiriusXM and CBC Radio.

Johnathan Pushkar - Does What She Does.

Modern Power Pop Artist  Singer/Songwriter, Johnathan Pushkar, has announced the release of the official video for “Does What She Does.” The video was shot in a bowling alley to capture the retro feel of the song, which draws influence from The Beach Boys and the pop sounds of the early 1960’s. Filmed at  the Donelson Bowl in Nashville, TN the video was Directed by Zachary Bair and features Carly Merritt and Johnathan Pushkar. The song was co-written by Pushkar and Steve Rempis. The video will premier today on Aim Country Music Television. Watch the video on his Facebook page and artist YouTube Channel here.

The music video promotes the second single from Johnathan Pushkar’s latest release, “Compositions,” which is a power pop/retro rock album featuring 11 songs, with special guest drummer, Geoff Britton, who played for Paul McCartney and Wings.

“'Does What She Does” was heavily inspired by one of my all-time favorite bands, The Beach Boys. Living in landlocked Tennessee, we couldn’t go surfing or to the beach, so my next choice was the bowling alley; there are very few places that reflect the nostalgia of the late 50s/early 60s as well as a retro bowling alley, so it felt like the perfect place to set this retro music video.” stated Jonathan Pushkar.

"Working with Johnathan and all of our talented friends was an incredible pleasure for “Does What She Does.” Johnathan had an amazing vision for this project, so we put our heads together in a single, for hour pre-production meeting for this video to make it all come to life,” shared Video Director - Zach Bair. “The shoot went extremely smooth and we could not be happier at how the video turned out!”

Velvet Vaughan - Phillip Michael Scales - Roddy Colmer

Velvet Vaughan shares her first single 'Sleep Walk' whilst she works on her debut album, the song combines alt rock with some country vibes and is very impressive. === Phillip Michael Scales song 'Find A Way' is both soulful and refined, as are the vocals and the musical arrangement allows his voice to shine through. === We have a video to accompany 'White Little Lights' by Roddy Colmer and it adds to the story line for what is a stunning and beautiful song.

Velvet Vaughan - Sleep Walk.

Born and raised in Nashville, TN, Velvet Ray Vaughan has been surrounded by the music industry since she was conceived after her parents played a gig together at Dollywood.

Her father, a legendary session guitar player and mother, a respected background singer and multi-instrumentalist, brought her on the tour bus when she was 6 months old. Vaughan grew up touring the country with her parents, watching side stage as they performed with acts such as Lucinda Williams, Carly Simon, James Taylor, Reba McEntire and Marty Stuart. At 18, Vaughan moved to NYC to study Acting and English Literature at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts.

During a particularly strong bout of homesickness her second year there, Vaughan began writing songs, drawing inspiration from influences such as Dolly Parton, Carole King, and Stevie Nicks. After writing and singing for herself for several years, Vaughan decided it was time to let others hear the songs she had carefully crafted. She sourced a band of close friends in the Brooklyn music scene, and began recording and playing shows within a month or two. "Sleep Walk" is her first single, and she is currently working on her debut album.

Phillip Michael Scales - Find A Way.

Growing up, Phillip-Michael Scales had an uncle who played guitar for a living. He knew it was a big deal but didn’t understand the significance that his uncle’s name was B.B. King. Even though Phillip-Michael played guitar, he shied away from soloing and most things blues. Instead, he fell in love with songwriting when an English teacher told him “A great writer can make their reader identify with anyone.” The trouble was he couldn’t find his story in the blues.

Born with a fierce independent streak and a passion for performing, Scales fronted his own indie bands, wrote and recorded his own music, and worked to make a name for himself on his own terms. All the while, his uncle just smiled a knowing smile and encouraged him to “stay with it.” As Phillip-Michael began to discover “the blues” in his private and personal life, their relationship grew closer.

It wasn’t until his uncle passed away that Scales began incorporating more of the blues into his music. “These days I’m finding more of my story in the blues. A lot has led me here between politics, my identity, and of course: Legacy.” The result is a sound he calls “Dive Bar Soul” which takes a bit of indie rock story telling and couples it with the passion of the blues.

Scales has opened for Fantastic Negrito, Anderson East, Guster, David Cook, Bethany Joy Lenz, Matt Hires, Billy Rafoul, Crystal Bowersox, Tyler Hilton, Jon McLaughlin, and Cory Brannan.

Roddy Colmer - White Little Lights.

For Roddy Colmer, the musical road has taken many twists and turns. He left Toronto in 2005 with his rock/reggae band Rebel Emergency and moved to New York City, where they spent a year recording their first album with Grammy Winning Producer “Commissioner” Gordon Williams (Lauryn Hill, Amy Winehouse). They teamed up with Jamaican Dancehall Artist “Panic” to become “Panic & The Rebel Emergency” and toured The USA and Jamaica until during a soundcheck in San Diego Panic was arrested on stage and sent to prison for 15 years for mistakes from his past. The band regrouped in Toronto and continued on, releasing 3 more albums as Rebel Emergency, touring Canada and opening for such artists as The Roots and 311.

The band took a break in 2012 and Roddy released his first solo album “The Little Things” and then started a new project called ‘Most Non Heinous”, an electro-rock band with artist/producer Matthew von Wagner (USS). MNH released 2 albums and had radio success with their single “Weird Science” which reached #25 on the Canadian Rock charts. Colmer released his latest album “Afterglow” in 2019, introduced by the melodic first single “Written in Stone”. Working without the creative constraints of a deadline, partnered with a focus on honest and resonant songwriting, the album took a year to record, with the bulk of the recording done with producer/engineer Devon Lougheed (Hey Ocean, Smashing Satellites) and additional recording and mixing done with Matthew von Wagner. Highlights include “Make it to Forever”, a melancholy duet with the very talented young Universal artist Nefe, the slow-burning “Little Glimpse”, which was co-written by the brilliant and accomplished singer/songwriter Jocelyn Alice, and “Yes I Do”, a perfect easy summer song written and recorded with artist/producer Ben Nudds.

The album was released by Flying Colours Music and reached #2 on the iTunes Canadian Singer/Songwriter charts and #90 on the overall Album charts. He also started the Rock project “Century Surfers” in 2019 with Jamie Gutfreund, which has released 3 singles including “The Storm” which debuted on the Top 50 Alternative Chart in Canada.  Colmer’s newest solo single “White Little Lights”, Produced by Ben Nudds, weaves lyrics about love and loss into a haunting melody. The song builds into a stirring crescendo, blending darkness and light and ultimately leaving the listener feeling uplifted. The song was boosted by the talents of Jason Pierce (Our Lady Peace) on drums, and Stuart Cameron (Matthew Good Band, Crash Test Dummies) on guitar. Colmer is also an active contributor to The Howard Stern Show, with his parody songs receiving consistent airplay. He plans to Keep writing and recording in 2020, working towards full EP releases for both his solo work and Century Surfers project.
