Neev - Will I Change You.

Ahead of the release of her debut album Katherine this Friday, Glaswegian artist Neev has released new single ‘Will I Change You’ via Trapped Animal. The single, a rousing indie-folk anthem, is an ode to the contemporary Scottish artists that inspire Neev. Of her new single, she says:

"I hope 'Will I Change You' functions as a little injection of energy and a jolt for the listener when hearing the record in its entirety. I had so much fun putting this together with the band, it happened really quickly but it  was a really memorable experience. I loved arranging it and letting it burst from the seams at points. It brings together the loud and quiet moments of contemporary Scottish artists I really adore like Frightened Rabbit, Fatherson, Paolo Nutini & Rachel Sermanni.'

Since the release of her debut single in 2019, Neev has built a reputation for discovering beauty in the small details. Katherine, a collection of intricate indie-folk songs that pack a lyrical punch. The album carries all of the trademark sounds of Neev’s previous releases; acoustic guitars, soaring string arrangements and layered backing vocals can be found throughout, but this time they’re bigger.

Buoyed by the experience of engineering, mixing and producing her 2021 EP Currants almost entirely alone whilst the country was in lockdown, much of Katherine was recorded at Neev’s home studio and the homes of a host of talented musician friends. “It was really important to me that the album wasn’t only a group of songs but that it would also be a learning curve for me, and it was! I learnt so much about arrangement, frequency, the range of my voice and the way I like to construct songs and write,” she says.

Every song on Katherine is tied to the idea of identity. “Each song explores the different facets of an individual,” explains Neev. “Them as someone’s child, someone’s sibling, someone’s partner. Someone as the gender (in my case, female) they identify as, someone as the job they do,” she continues.

The album’s title encapsulates the record’s essence. “Katherine is a common name in my family and it’s also my middle name,”  says Neev. “So whilst it has a personal meaning, it also exists in a few different ways. I named the album ‘Katherine’ because it  touches on the themes of family, identity and the different identities one person can hold within themselves.”

Twin Rains - You're The Only One.

Love is apocalyptic, according to Twin Rains. Love demands courage, the sort that has us looking into the darkest shadows of our hearts. Our pain is a weapon, our unchecked darkness the ammunition. Blame is easy, but it solves nothing. When we live without the courage to examine our own motivations, we are bound to hurt ourselves and others. We are bound to do it either way.

Toronto act Twin Rains is set to release their new single, an apocalyptic love song called ‘You’re the Only One’, today April 25. The song, a sonic offspring of the band’s 2020 offering, ‘Strawberry Moon,’ in its heavy, dreamlike qualities, is the first new material from the band since the release of their second full-length, ‘Unreal City,’ in 2021.

Twin Rains is Jay Merrow and Christine Stoesser. The two write, record and mix most of their music that blends dream pop and psych rock and electro. Twin Rains perform regularly in Toronto's music scene with live drummer Greg Smith. Signed to Rough Trade Publishing, they have had their music streamed around the world and licensed on TV shows and movies.

The autumn blaze maple tree, famous as music in Nashville, is a fast grower. Imagine its teeming majesty of red leaves from above one house in the city’s Inglewood neighborhood. You see it ensconced like a controlled flame by rolling hills and winding roads. A familiar pattern lulls you from days into nights in this dreamy park town. You never realized from the ground, under the shade of that tree, how all these beautiful designs in any city keep you sane.

The sweeping vantage points of Photo Ops’ Burns Bright belong first to the quiet of Nashville’s first modern suburb after World War II. Terry Price lived there while perfecting the melodic soft-rock modes that pleased audiences on tour with Camera Obscura and Fences.

Breandán Fitzpatrick -Sweet Return.

Breandán Fitzpatrick is an artist from Ireland. He is one half the acclaimed band Omonoko who are mostly know for electronic dance music, however over the last 10 years Breandán has also been working steadily in the background of the band on his own acoustic singer-songwriter tracks, which are about to take the forefront of his musical ambitions with debut solo single ‘Sweet Return’, out now.

The years in which Breandán has spent perfecting his solo material in the background of Omonoko has truly paid off. ‘Sweet Return’ is a perfectly produced and instantly striking gorgeous indie-acoustic affair, that would sound at home on national radio as well as major Spotify playlists alike.

Lyrically, the song centres around an individual who no longer is in the world of the protagonist, as Breandán reflects on a difficult relationship, wishing for a ‘Sweet Return’. Combining true feelings and a relatable modesty, the song’s simplicity allows it to scale high mountains of depth.

“You’re here in my heart, you’re here in my head”, he sings as subtle piano picks out emotions and creates poignant atmospheres behind the song’s Ben Howard and Jose Gonzalez-esque acoustic rhythms.

Omonoko have been highly revered across Ireland by the likes of RTE, Hot Press & Nialler 9 and more, but with ‘Sweet Return’ it is an exciting time for Breandán who is coming out of the shadows to showcase a long secret side to his creativity. ‘Sweet Return’ looks set to put Breandán firmly on the map this year as a singer-songwriter of very high calibre.

Lavinia Blackwall - The Damage We Have Done.

Lavinia Blackwall’s work with prolific Glaswegian psych-folk outfit Trembling Bells has earnt her a reputation as one of the best voices in the scene, many critics have likened her singing prowess to that of Fairport Convention singer Sandy Denny. Along with Trembling Bells she has released seven full-length albums and performed as the backing band to folk legends Bonnie Prince Billy and The Incredible String Band’s Mike Herron. In 2020 she releases Muggington Lane End, her debut solo album released under her own name. In 2021, she and Laura J Martin released Wyndow, the debut self-titled album from their new psychedelic-pop project.

Now, Blackwall is releasing her new single ‘The Damage We Have Done’, a powerful dose of folk-rock and the sign of new things to come. Inspired by Percy Shelley’s ‘Ozymandias’, the single is about the brevity we have on this planet. “It’s about the fact that we can't take anything with us, hoping to leave behind something meaningful and the hope that one day we'll all meet again. The realisation that there is an environmental and spiritual consequence to the lives we choose to lead,” says Blackwall.

Recorded at ‘The Barn’, the studio Blackwall shares with her partner and producer Marco Rea at their home in Hardgate, Scotland. “We really went down the rabbit hole with this one,” says Blackwall, speaking of the recording process. “Strings, thumb piano, far too many guitar parts. I must have recorded the vocals about 60 times and was really struggling to get it right, but we got there eventually,” she says. “With the chord progressions and circular movement of the verses, the sound of it is very individual. I don't think it sounds like anything else out there right now”.

The Subtheory - Cut To Black.

The Subtheory set out their stall early for a busy 2023 with an ethereal, atmospheric new single; Cut to Black.  Eerie piano leads you to floating, airy synths, jangling guitars laid upon a descending bass groove with Cate DeBu’s melancholy cautionary tale of a life spent playing the odds on both sides.  

There is an intriguing contrast between the sweet, dreamlike quality of the music and melodies juxtaposed with the harsh and slightly bitter tang of the lyrics. “There will be a certainty for those who like to bet..”

Red Telephone - Hollowing Out.

Hollowing Out, the debut album from Cardiff-based five-piece Red Telephone will be released on 31st March 2023. The dystopia-tinged album deals with themes of alienation, identity and monotony, as well as exploring contemporary social dilemmas such as the trappings of ambition in a saturated pop culture age, the pervasive nature of modern media and social media fatigue. Sonically, the band draw from an array of influences; ranging from Berlin-era Bowie, brooding synth-led film soundtracks such as Blade Runner and Uncut Gems, the art rock of Kate Bush and St Vincent, as well as modern electronic pop artists such as MGMT, Mitski and Tame Impala.

Speaking about the upcoming album, singer Declan Andrews said; While putting together ‘Hollowing Out’ we were really getting into synths; drawing quite a bit on brooding, synth-led film soundtracks like Blade Runner, Scarface and Uncut Gems. Part of this was out of necessity - it was the initial 2020 lockdown when I wrote most of the songs in my bedroom and I’d got my hands on emulations of classic synths which gave me free reign to really explore this territory of sounds. I also had the free time to watch and rewatch a lot of movies such as those just mentioned. All of this definitely crossed over with the band’s prior love of film, Bowie’s Berlin-era sound, his work with Iggy and albums like Little Dark Age by MGMT too.

Basically, those dystopian soundscapes that evoke a lot of mood and imagery. As a band we’ve been drawn to them for a while, especially since visiting Berlin and exploring Bowie’s stomping ground (quite run down and not very touristy areas) but also after playing Tallinn Music Week in 2019. The post-Soviet landscape was pretty striking in parts of Tallinn and we discovered bands like Molchat Doma for the first time, who were using synths and electronic elements in ways that got us excited and has definitely rubbed off on our approach since.

We really wanted to integrate these sounds and influences into a modern sounding record rather than just looking back though, so we spent a lot of time getting the bass and low end sounding as big and distinctive as possible - we were really influenced by the likes of Kendrick Lamar in this respect. Similarly, dystopian themes seem as relevant as ever; with the saturated and pervasive nature of modern media which the album explores lyrically, as well as topics like social media fatigue and alienation.

New single, ‘The House’, was written from the point of view of someone who had big dreams but ignored those wants and now feels too old or past it to pursue them. The speaker finds themself trapped in a domestic setting - The House - and instead of feeling like it’s a place of comfort or joy, it's a place that traps her.

Of the single, Neev says: “When writing this song I certainly had in mind the stereotypical trope of a classic 50s housewife, stuck at home with a very prescribed set of tasks and interests they were allowed to explore. In this song, and in other songs on the album, I found myself exploring the woman’s relationship to art and their constraints within that. Historically, women with creative interests were often encouraged to explore those things as hobbies rather than occupations and I think this song touches on the idea that there existed a lot of women in history that weren’t able to explore who they truly were creatively due to societal constraints.”

Stay Lunar - Distance.

Following on from earlier single, 'I Like It When You're around', Stay Lunar present their next in a long-line of fantastic singles, 'Distance'. It's been a long run to this point for Stay Lunar, but as the tracks keep coming out the sound gets tinges of a band nearing the fully formed and developed sound.

'Distance' has the sound they've carried so well through their career, the ever-so-present and versatile sonic that always feels like it could soundtrack a film, but there's something slightly more immediate and certainly more forthright about the band's latest offerings.

'Distance' is the launch pad of the band's much promised change in direction, not that it was needed, but chief writer in the band, Harry, has always intended to push the boundaries of the project and 'Distance' is the first real slice of Stay Lunar's take on the Are-These-Guys-Really-English sound.

Taking cues from their British contemporaries like Far Caspian & early stage SPINN, whilst nodding to the likes of Day Wave and The Drums further afield, Stay Lunar are offering a quintessentially British take on a much loved and revered sound. Of the track, singer Harry Leigh said: "Distance is a song about running away from your problems, and how it always catches up with you one way or another."

Today, Neev has shared her new single ‘Fast Patterns’. Written from the point of view of an imperfect friend, the song is about not knowing how to be there for someone in their darkest moments. It asks how far you should go for a friend in need and at what point you need to take a step back.

Matt Corby - Big Smoke.

Today, Matt Corby released his hallucinatory new single “Big Smoke,” the newest single from his upcoming album Everything’s Fine (out March 24th via Communion). Next month Corby will kick off a limited run of intimate shows across the US with sold-out shows in New York, Los Angeles, Austin, and Toronto.

His first album in five years, Everything’s Fine vividly captures the personal and creative growth of Matt Corby who, like many, was tipped belly side up recently. Beyond the global touring pause, on the day he was meant to start recording his new album, Corby and his family were instead rescued by a neighbor. Their home had been engulfed by the flood waters that raged through Queensland and New South Wales, Australia, in early 2022.

After nervously watching his heavily pregnant partner and young son be whisked away in a small inflatable dinghy, he got to work ferrying provisions to stranded locals and digging rotting mud out from beneath his home. With their home inundated by floodwaters, the whole family moved into Corby’s Rainbow Valley Studios during the album’s recording process. Juggling familial responsibilities with his creative pursuits was a one-of-a-kind pressure cooker circumstance that galvanized his artistic evolution.

“I'm currently rebuilding a lot of my foundational stuff,” Matt shares. “Covid changed me a lot, slowed me down. I feel like I've become aware of a lot of the stuff I need to work on, and I'm happy to start – and I have been. All of that chaos helped me not be neurotic with this album process and get to the point where I accepted things. Like, I couldn’t sit and stew over how something sounded and potentially make it worse if I was needed elsewhere."

Surf Friends - Dreaming.

Hot off the heels of their latest single ‘Something Real’, Surf Friends release the second single, ‘Dreaming’, from their upcoming album Sonic Waves. Taking a step further into their kaleidoscopic sound whilst keeping in line with their blissful rock sensibilities, Brad Coley and Pete Westmoreland dish out even more ethereal melodies and guitar loops on ‘Dreaming’, enveloping listeners in its heavenly wash of sonics.

“This song is about how nature provides us with the environment we need to slow us down, allowing us to see more clearly the direction we want to take.” Surf Friends say of the track. “It is about that very moment we become aware and feel our potential, see the direction and take the helm.”

Along with the single, Surf Friends have announced two album release shows in March to celebrate the release of their upcoming album, Sonic Waves. Taking place in their hometown, Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland as well as surf capital Whāingaroa/Raglan, Surf Friends will be joining forces with Power Nap (in Raglan), DJ The Bermuda Triangle and King Of The Sadboys (in Auckland) to put on an epic night of music, and showcase their new tunes live and in the flesh. Surf Friends will also be performing at Field Of Dreams Festival on Saturday the 18th of February, alongside Te Huhu, Arthur Ahbez, Wellness and more.

Emiliana Torrini & The Colorist Orchestra - Hilton.

Just over a month from now, Emiliana Torrini & The Colorist Orchestra will release their anticipated new album Racing The Storm on March 17th via Bella Union. Ahead of the release, and having previously shared videos for the singles “Right Here” and “Mikos”, Emiliana & TCO now share a captivating video for new single “Hilton” directed by Aarich Jespers (TCO) & Anaïs Dyckmans. Taking its inspiration from David Hockney, “Tango” by Zbigniew Rybczyński and “Here” by Richard McGuire, the video is a one-shot of Emiliana, The Colorist Orchestra and dancers together in a small living room, projected onto objects and re-shot. In the end we see a broken image of ‘one scene’. This image underlines the eclectic vibe and groove of the song and speaks the language of isolation and being together in online meetings, dreams and fantasies.

Picture this: a big storm is brewing overhead. You’re careening through the backroads of rural Iceland, trying desperately to catch your flight out of Reykjavik as the skies darken behind you. You’ve just had one of the best songwriting sessions of your life, in a farmhouse deep in the Icelandic countryside, but none of that matters now. You’ve found yourself in a race against time to get all your work to the next studio and continue working on your album—one that just might turn out to be one of the most important of your entire career.

This exact scenario is what befell Belgian duo The Colorist Orchestra and Icelandic-Italian singer-songwriter Emiliana Torrini during one of the many recording sessions for their new collaborative album—and the experience was so emblematic of the entire awe-inspiring, chaotic, life-affirming process, that they ended up naming the record Racing the Storm.

The Colorist Orchestra knows a thing or two about controlled chaos. Since their inception in 2013, close friends and multi-instrumentalists Aarich Jespers and Kobe Proesmans have taken on the task of reinterpreting other artists’ discographies with their unique blend of pop, electronic and world music. In 2015, they entered into a collaboration with Emiliana, who at that time was already well into her own illustrious career, having released six studio albums, as well as the international hit “Jungle Drum”.

La Ratte - Astray (Album).

If you like your blues dirty and rocking hard, then La Ratte and their debut album may be just the thing to get you off your chairs, put on your dancing shes and go see where your air guitar is stashed.

Astray is the album where seasoned and street savy musicians Harm van Essen (guitar/vocals) Jochem Jorrisen (drums) and Nikolas Karolewic (bass) meet in their passion for hard hittin' Swamp Blues, Roots and Rock n' Roll. It surely confirms the musicians' punky attitude towards music.

La Ratte is a three piece band formed as a well fitting misalliance. It started out with two Dutch musicians, Harm van Essen and Jochem Jorrisen, with a punk attitude towards music. Harm started to record demos that put La Ratte in a new direction. The new material needed a bass player to play the songs live, and Nikolas Karolewicz from Münster Germany was asked to join the band.

Since late 2021, La Ratte has been based around Harm’s wayward songwriting, raw vocals and fiery guitar playing, Jochem’s explosive drumming and Nikolas’ steady and old school bass groove. The combination nails a contemporary blues sound by delivering a swampy catchy roots album.

The new album, Astray, was recorded in 7 days at Studio De Krakeling, built in a former mental asylum. Each of the eleven tracks explores a different side of American Roots music, taking inspiration from the energy of Texas Blues, hypnotizing Mississippi Hill Country groove, and the catchiness of Louisiana Swamp Pop classics.
