Mookie and The Bab - Mercury's Antennae - Juanita Stein

Mookie and The Bab - The Tide.

Mookie and The Bab all-acoustic indie-folk new single 'The Tide' has just been released on Kycker. Fuelled by long drives across desert landscapes taking inCalifornia, Nevada, and Texas, Bradford’s own Mookie + The Bab are an all-acoustic indie-folk group whose acoustic guitar, mandolin, fiddle, layered vocals, and occasional trumpet capture the sound of the American Southwest – yet remainstrue to British working class roots.

Moved by climate emergency, Floods, fires, desertification, and exploring organic sounds with rousing harmonies, multi-instrumentalists Abi Otway, Marc Otway and Conor Magi’s Americana-Yorkshire folk blend is steeped in nature, emerging from their unique bond after many years making music together and travels playing festivals internationally and across the UK.

Mercury's Antennae - The Reflecting Skin (William Faith Remix).

Currently based between Switzerland and the US, the trio comprises Dru Allen and Cindy Coulter of This Ascension, and Erick r. Scheid of The Palace of Tears. Their sound incorporates influences from shoegaze pop, ethereal darkwave, and unadorned acoustic beauty, while also drawing inspiration from ambient and modern electronica. Through the iconic Projekt label, Mercury’s Antennae released their debut album, A Waking Ghost Inside (2014); followed by The Guides EP (2015); and sophomore album, Beneath the Serene (2016).Their debut for Sett Records was 2018’s The Moon Viewing Garden EP, followed by appearances at prestigious festivals Wave-Gotik-Treffen in Leipzig, Germany; and Tomorrow’s Ghosts Festival in Whitby, England. ‘The Reflecting Skin’ is the lead single from their long-waited third album, Among the Black Trees, forthcoming from Sett Records in Spring 2025.

With its driving chorus bass, serpentine swirl 12-string guitar, spacious ambient electronics and Dru Allen’s siren voice, the single release of ‘The Reflecting Skin’ is graced with a remix by the goth “all father” William Faith. His remix showcases a haunting, driving, hypnotic and atmospheric interpretation of the song: a sonic alchemy that seems to emanate from another time, another place. William says:

“Getting to remix ‘The Reflecting Skin’ was very much like going home for me. Having worked closely with Dru and my sister Cindy in This Ascension beginning some 32 years ago, this was very comfortable and familiar territory, though Erick’s sensibilities brought something new and different to work with, making for a dynamic and exciting creative endeavor. Overall, I feel like I managed to bridge the time gap with an interesting take on the song that is at once nostalgic and classic in feel, while updating the sonic depth and breadth in a way that suits the moment. It was a blast for me -- love it!”

Juanita Stein - The Old World.

Juanita Stein warms up for her imminent solo headline tour with the release of an Orlando-Cubitt-directed video for ‘Old World’, taken from her critically acclaimed fourth solo album ‘The Weightless Hour’ (out now, Agricultural Audio). Following recent UK tours with Evan Dando and Travis, the Howling Bells frontwoman will embark on her own UK solo headline dates, which include a performance at London's Lower Third on 25th March.

Stein says of ‘Old World’: “This was a song that was written in one long breath, in a room, in a house, in a village in the South of France. After having taken a long walk through the woods, the light streaming through the pine trees, I found myself reflecting on what it means for me, to have ended up living and travelling in Europe, like so many of my family before me.

This song recalls the first time I travelled to Europe, which was with my family when I was 16. Having lived a life in Australia, a country in its infancy by comparison, I was confronted with a rich and bloodied history whose roots ran centuries underground. The generational trauma that came with learning about my own family history there, was a reckoning. We brought along my grandmother, who hadn’t returned to Czechoslovakia since she was 14, when she was forced to flee the Nazis. We visited the crumbling house she grew up in. I stood in the streets of many Jewish ghettos and burnt out synagogues that were forced to become churches. I visited Holocaust Memorial museums, I learned of the slow rise of right-wing fascism reawakening in a new Europe, all of this coupled with the acknowledgement that I had relocated to Europe myself to start a family and the conflict that causes within the body. I learned what it felt like to be the “other”, to be hated for the religion you were born into, and simultaneously, to also be hated for being perceived as a Westerner, as when someone yelled at me, “bloody American” when they looked down at my ripped jeans, or when me and my brothers were hauled into a police station in Prague for potentially spying when using our disposable cameras outside a cemetery. This was not Australia. This was The Old World.”

Robyn Sherwell - Quiet Marauder - MaryLiz - Matilda Gracia - Carbon Memory - Oracle Sisters - Juanita Stein

Robyn Sherwell - A Kiss.

Singer and songwriter Robyn Sherwell shares ‘A Kiss’, the second single taken from her upcoming new album ‘Unfold’, due for release on June 18th. Talking about the meaning behind the song, Robyn says; “A kiss is a simple act, but can also mean crossing the line between friendship and something more than friendship. The song speaks to the risk of doing something that can’t be undone, something that could change everything, and the floating exhilaration, fear, excitement and anticipation of that moment.”

Robyn’s alluring vocals are set over gently rocking Wurlitzer keys, with lush electric guitar delays building up into beguiling cascading layers, giving the sense of free-falling as the line is crossed. Robyn’s vocal delivery is like the whispered sharing of a secret, as we hear every tiny breath and are carried on the journey into this moment, one that so many people can relate to.

The song is accompanied by a dance performance video, featuring LA based dancer Carly Blaney. The idea behind the video was born when Carly and Robyn connected via Instagram after Carly posted a video of herself dancing to Robyn’s cover of ‘Landslide’. “We wanted the video to be simple and allow the choreography and Carly’s talent to shine,” explains Robyn. “Carly’s interpretation of the song as a solo dancer perfectly connects to the lyrics. I just adore how expressive and intimate it feels. I’ve always loved how beautifully dance can convey a song’s energy and meaning., I’m so happy to have been able to collaborate with Carly to create these visuals.”

Robyn Sherwell is a name that has been on the lips of tastemakers since her debut single ‘Love Somebody’ became a firm favourite of Lauren Laverne’s on BBC Radio 6 and signalled the arrival of a new heart-on-sleeve female singer-songwriter. Follow up single ‘Islander’, a dedication to her childhood home of Guernsey, quickly secured support from Huw Stephens and BBC Introducing, catapulting Sherwell onto the latter’s stage at Glastonbury in June 2015. That same summer, her cover of Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Landslide’ was chosen as the soundtrack to the trailer for the film ‘Suffragette’. This led to Lauren Laverne making the track her 6Music Recommends Track Of The Week, and Jo Whiley playing it twice in one show on her BBC Radio 2 show. In 2021, the emotive power of her rendition is still turning heads: having caught the attention of Airbnb, the song was placed within the film for their latest major global advertising campaign. While her original songs ‘Low’ and ‘Love Somebody’ have been featured on the soundtrack of popular TV shows including Good Trouble and Oprah Winfrey’s Queen Sugar.

Quiet Marauder - Epic Plot Twist: Extinguished.

Following swiftly on from last year’s Tiny Men Parts EP, Quiet Marauder re-enter the sonic fray with their latest Bubblewrap Collective long-player, The Gift, on 9th April 2021.

Taking a strong divergence from the bombastic pop-punk of its predecessor, The Gift sees backing vocalist Kadesha Drija step to the foreground for the majority of the album, standing afront a richly crafted, multi-instrumental acoustic-folk backdrop.

Recorded pre-pandemic, January 2020, in The Burning Hell’s (Canada) pop-up Snowbird Studios, aka an art deco villa in Riofreddo, near Rome (Italy), this release marks another chapter in the ongoing international collaboration between the bands. For this album, Quiet Marauder’s (Wales) contributions of acoustic guitar, bass, trumpet and layered lead and backing vocals are granted further textural depth from their Canadian counterparts. These include minimalist harmonic splashes of flute, piano, organ (Jake Nicoll), electric guitar, bouzouki (Darren Browne) and bass clarinet (Ariel Sharratt).

Returning to the conceptual songwriting approach of previous releases MEN and The Crack And What It Meant, The Gift charts the narrative of a troubled teenage girl (Willow) haunted by visions of a mysterious house fire. Willow’s path is traced through well-meaning foster parents, teenage love interests, time-bending superpowers, distrust of domestic appliances and, ultimately, her own memories; covering themes of self-identity and the fallibility of human recall. Though the album marks a more overtly serious tone for the band, the sensitive subject matter is delicately handled through their trademark low-key, observational and, sometimes, darkly humorous lyrics.

MaryLiz - Winter in California.

MaryLiz draws her inspiration from ordinary scenes of her life and transforms them into powerful messages that can reach everybody. A rare gem that will grasp your attention through powerful and engaging live performances. A singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist that is not afraid to deliver her songs with infectious grace and a singular vulnerability. She recalls being influenced by various musical genres and performers, including the blues, Sade, Fleetwood Mac, and Drake to name a few.

Her style is still young and developing, although the consistency of her writing is very mature. She chooses subjects that relate to the role of the modern woman and moves easily between ballads and more uptempo beats, varying her delivery to occasionally allow her band to stretch the music and incorporate elements from world music and Jazz.

Originally from Coopersburg, Pennsylvania, she obtained a music degree from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and while doing so, developed many contacts within the local music scene where her artistry is quickly earning her a pristine reputation and her fan base continues to expand. MaryLiz actively participates in numerous festivals and venues, including Blast Furnace Blues Festival at Steel Stacks, International Blues Festival in Memphis, Tennessee, Tall Trees Festival, the Kimmel Center, Silvana’s, Barnes Foundation, The Grape Room, and many others. Additional performance credits include Brian Williams and The Get Back, and Blues Junior at the ”Best of Philly” Soiree. Her song “Can I Be” is featured in the film “Drown The Clown”.

Matilda Gracia - Rising Sun.

I wrote Rising Sun exactly one year ago, the day I was told my beloved Grandmother passed away from Covid.  I was in shock and the only thing that got me through that moment was writing this song. In fact, I feel as if I didn’t write it at all, it just poured out of me almost as if it was her helping me through that moment.

During this past year I have spent many months working on this song, day and night, in my home studio. Rising Sun will be available on all platforms on the 9th of April.

Matilda Gracia is a half Irish, half Spanish singer songwriter, musician and producer who describes her music as Self-help pop, “I like mixing catchy melodies with topics that matter, with the goal to connect and help people through music”. She is influenced by various genres including pop, soul, blues & singer-songwriter.

Since moving to London there have been a few highlights for Matilda including supporting Spanish Indie rock band on a UK tour, performing in iconic venues such as Notting hill Arts club and Electric Ballroom, making a guest appearance on Andertons live sessions and working with record label Dreamscope media group, to name but a few.

Since moving back to her hometown in Spain, Matilda has made creating music her top priority. She has been dedicated to working in her home studio to find the know how to express her music.  “I want more freedom and ability to express my thoughts through music, so that’s why I’m learning how to do it myself, plus I’m having so much fun in the process”. You can find Matilda on all the social media platforms as she embraces this new world by releasing her music.

Carbon Memory - Distance.

Carbon Memory is a dynamic alternative rock band that develops sonic snapshots that are both transporting and cinematic. The Toronto band cues magnetic guitars and contemplative lyrics to a reel of ambient textures that oscillate between a sense of nostalgia and optimism.

It is in this spirit that the band came upon the sound and title of their upcoming EP, Tourist. Following the arduous process of self-producing/recording their 2018 debut EP, Panoramas, the band decided to enlist the help of Toronto producer Graham Walsh (Holy Fu*k, Alvvays, METZ) to best capture and instigate sonic experimentation on the group’s latest material.

Tourist was recorded over a period of two weeks, late summer 2020, at Toronto’s Palace Sound and Candle Recording studios. The EP features the band’s most compact and direct work yet. From the hazy, ethereal shoegaze textures and krautrock inspired “Distance” to the smug and insidious piano driven crooner “Rumours” that burns slow but heavy; Tourist gives the listener an idea of where the band has been and hints of where they want to go next. “The Only One” borrows plenty from the British Alternative rock aesthetic with a wall of guitars, a pulsing piano and soaring catchy choruses. “Closure” is the band’s organic midnight summer synth funk jam, while the brooding track “Tonight” plays out a recurring dream suspended by angular rhythms, wiry guitars and haunting melodies.

August 2018, saw the band release its debut EP, Panoramas; setting across Southern Ontario for a string of shows including dates at Toronto’s iconic Opera House and Lee’s Palace. The band was also featured on Southern Souls, the fantastic online video archive of the latest Canadian independent talent, showcasing two live-off-the-floor performances of the band’s jazzy and psychedelic laced track “Medusa” and their embracing folk-inspired song “Ocean of Gold”.

Oracle Sisters - Paris II (E.P).

Parisian trio Oracle Sisters share their new EP ‘Paris II’, via NYC/LA independent label 22TWENTY (Madge, Fat Trout Trailer Park). Over the past twelve months, Oracle Sisters have built up a loyal and global following, blurring the lines between music and visual arts. Support for their music has come from NME, CLASH,The Line Of Best Fit, DIY, So Young, W Magazine, Vanity Fair, Beats1, COLORS, BBC 6 Music, BBC Radio 1, KEXP, NPR and many more. This culminated in the critically acclaimed release of Paris I, mid-way through 2020.

Now, Oracle Sisters release its sequel, ‘Paris II’ . Building upon their first EPs thematic premise of music lifted from a utopian vision of the French capital (where the band are based) the upcoming body of work shows the duel side “of that world...coming back down to earth to explore the darker sides of the psyche while probing some allies of hope” add the band.

Moreover, the EP has allowed the trio to mature and develop into sophisticated songwriters, weaving together their own sonic universe built on a tapestry of enigmatic lyrics lightyears ahead of their contemporaries and melodies that are  fitting to be sung round a campfire, or in a far-off tavern filled with revellers transporting the listener “to a portal to the past and the future, the stars and the moon.”

Oracle Sisters’ members hail from across Europe and the UK , the band are uninhibited in their influences, finding inspiration within the art, cinema, philosophy, and music of the world over; resulting in a sound that is both sonically sophisticated and warmly familiar. Lyrically, they explore timeless narratives of love, mysticism and spirituality, scattered with intriguing insights into their own personal lives and experiences resulting in songs that are cryptic yet inviting.

Now, having started recording in Greece,  the band are finishing off their debut album in Paris, due for announcement soon. Along the road, they’ve also played impromptu shows on the island of Hydra with friends from Fontaines D.C & The Murder Capital – capturing the troubadour spirit of the band.

With well over three million streams across their modest catalogue, and an impressive schedule of live dates to be announced across the UK, Europe and US and a debut album on the way - Oracle Sisters are quickly becoming recognised as one of the most exciting and prolific outfits to emerge from the French music scene, and now set their sights further afield.

Juanita Stein - Snapshot (Locked Down - Live from Brighton Electric).

Juanita Stein will release a new live EP, Locked Down - Live From Brighton Electric via Nude Records on 28th May. The Howling Bells frontwoman turned solo artist performed songs from her acclaimed album, Snapshot, with a band that included her Howling Bells bandmates and the album’s producer, Ben Hillier, for the EP, which also features a pair of bonus tracks recorded during the original LP studio sessions.  Additionally, Juanita has announced some changes to her upcoming UK tour dates made necessary by ongoing COVID restrictions.

The release of the live EP will coincide with Stein’s previously announced UK headline dates. However, she has unfortunately been forced to cancel several dates due to ongoing COVID restrictions.  She explains:

"For those of you in Leicester, Newcastle, and Edinburgh I’m so sorry but with things being what they are right now, that is, still under part lockdown, I just can’t make these shows work at 50% capacity. I was holding out for a bit to see if we could, but financially it’s a kill. I want nothing more than to play Snapshot live for you and want to honour that with a full band. As SOON as I’m able to, I will get to you again. Birmingham, Bristol, London and Brighton will go ahead as scheduled, proximity to getting myself and the band home [each night] makes these shows entirely possible for me right now. I hope you understand and see you soon! X Juanita”

Stephen Becker - Juanita Stein - Deadletter

Stephen Becker has shared 'Clean' along with an imaginative video, the song itself is a smooth flowing and gently melodic piece. === We have shared two songs by Juanita Stein so far this year and now we make it three with 'L.O.T.F' as the alt rock artist continues to create standout songs. === Now based in South London Deadletter have just released the powerful rocker 'Fit For Work' where the band kick up a storm, inter-spaced with some hypnotic vocal moments.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stephen Becker - Clean.

Stephen Becker has announced the release of a new EP the first under his own name out October 30 on NNA Tapes. Nothing Sun Under the New expresses exactly the kind of poetic sleights-of-hand we encounter throughout this short, brilliant offering. This compact record is filled with aphorisms flipped on their heads, reversals of logic and intuition, dislocations of causality and expectation. Alongside the announcement, Becker shared an entrancing music video for the album’s lead single “Clean,” which was directed by Johnny Frohman & Gerard Marcus, and stars a charming Marley McDonald. On the song Becker explains: “‘Clean’ is about escaping technology, cell phones, social media - the way we clean ourselves with water, and how doing the same with technology would destroy it (i.e. submerging your phone in a bathtub). So cleaning is also destruction, and maybe it takes a little destruction to really get clean.”

For Stephen Becker, music is a stream of consciousness. Originally working as the Trees Take Ease moniker, the Brooklyn based artist is stepping out from under the branches and releasing music under his own name for the first time. It marks a shift, a new beginning, that initially started out as a casual bedroom project but quickly blossomed into something significant. This new chapter starts with EP Nothing Sun Under the New.

Equal parts weird and sublime, Becker resides in a sonic universe that bends into a state of oblivion and relishes the fleeting moments. This uninhibited approach creates a kaleidoscope of textures where songs about frozen drinks and old teachers exist against a backdrop of propulsive synths, screwy percussion and lo-fi guitar hooks. “I think there’s a lot of power in the right melody and the right chord progression and the right sonic environment and that to me has as much emotional weight as anything that I’m saying,” he says.

Attending concerts as a teen with his Dad and playing in jazz band throughout high school led Becker to experiment with different improvised arts, rubbing shoulders with different genres and practises. This curiosity, along with his talents, secured him a place at Oberlin college in Ohio, studying guitar performance. There, Becker witnessed performances from the likes of Deerhoof, Frankie Cosmos, Yo Yo Ma and Fred Frith that inspired him to merge his skills as a jazz musician and guitar expert and dive into songwriting.

Juanita Stein - L.O.T.F.

Juanita Stein has released a new song, ‘L.O.T.F’, from her upcoming third album, ‘Snapshot', which is set for release via Nude Records on 23rd October in all formats.

‘L.O.T.F’ follows the recent release of the LP’s title track and a second song, ‘The Mavericks’, which picked up early support from the likes of Mojo, Clash and 6 Music for Brighton-based, Australian songwriter, who first became known for her work as singer and guitarist in Howling Bells.

The song taps into the theme that runs throughout the album, which was recorded following the sudden loss of Stein’s father in 2019. As Juanita explains, it is “an ode to growing up in Australia, tinged with a sad bitterness.” It is a devilish intersection of a song, with introspective lyrics swimming through snarling guitars.

About the album: It feels fundamental to understanding the devastation and eerie silence thrust upon us after his sudden death,” begins the Brighton-based, Australian songwriter Juanita Stein, discussing the moment of great sadness that inspired her new record. “It was a daunting task to sum up the life of one man such as my father. He was endlessly inspiring, charming, deeply talented and passionately spiritual. He admirably, and at times frustratingly, carried the torch for his own musical career until the very end.”

It’s within this processing of a life well-lived and attempting to wrestle with the tides of her own grief, that what would become the album began to ebb and flow out of Stein, who first became known for her work as singer and guitarist in Howling Bells.

“After I felt I had enough songs,” Juanita explains, “I was moved to reach out to producer Ben Hillier, who I’d been a fan of since hearing records he made with Clinic, Elbow ad Doves to see if he might be interested in making this album with me.”

Unlike her first two solo albums, “America” (2017) and “Until The Lights Fade” (2018), which were made in just a few weeks and both at studios in the US, ‘Snapshot’ was recorded over the course of eight months at Agricultural Audio, not far from Juanita’s home.

Deadletter - Fit For Work.

Hailing from Yorkshire though now South London rooted, DEADLETTER channel the droll fury of The Fall and the lopsided rhythm of Gang of Four into a strain of vehement post-punk, exploring the darker side of existence through a lens of narrative-driven levity. Now the band release their potent second single "Fit For Work", following the release of debut single "Good Old Days" in May this year.

The last year has seen DEADLETTER emerge as a genuinely thrilling live prospect, showcasing their brand of chaotic hedonism across the country supporting the likes of Squid, Viagra Boys and Avalanche Party. Debut single "Good Old Days" was a clear stylistic marker of the band’s vision and received both regional BBC and 6Music play.

New single "Fit For Work" follows in that vein, offering an acute, angered study into bureaucracy, and loss of personal identity. DEADLETTER are experts in the field of intensity; seamlessly switching from conversational verses into unadulterated post-punk fury - "Fit For Work" is a huge statement of intent from the band.

Of new single "Fit For Work", frontman Zac Woolley writes: "Fit For Work was a concept a long time before it was a song. As a band, and as a writer, we [I] have always regarded the call and response strategy as biblical. The idea of having a conversation during the delivery of art leads to this absurd metaphysical tangent of acknowledging your art is art whilst performing it; similar to when artists use the line “I wrote this song for you because…” what they are doing, when you think about it, is taking away the idea that what they’re creating exists in itself, and is in fact an entity that exists in a wholly real world.

As a song, "Fit For Work" is about more than just the Department for Work and Pensions. It provides a mirror to the world, and specifically the Britain of today.  The ideas explored within the track are seemingly exaggerated accounts of reality but, upon close examination, have worrying roots in true experience, with the track aiming to parallel the savagery of the narrator in the song with the actual brutality of our government.

The declaration of someone as ‘Fit For Work’ is symptomatic of the apathy and bureaucratic cruelty prevalent in society, where being unable to meet a certain ticked number of boxes (either literally or metaphorically), equates to the surrender of personal autonomy, and by extension, individual identity.

Luciana Valentina - Juanita Stein

Luciana Valentina new single 'The Murder Of Margaret' is described as a theatrical pop piece and it's all of that, her vocals are resplendent, the arrangement dramatic, put simply, it's a fabulous affair. === Juanita Stein has been featured here a good few times including last month when we shared the title track from the forthcoming album 'Snapshot'. She has followed that up with 'The Mavericks' and it's another gorgeous, atmospheric alt rock song.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Luciana Valentina - The Murder Of Margaret.

Luciana Valentina is thrilled to announce the release of her latest single and music video, ‘The Murder of Margaret’, available everywhere now.

‘The Murder of Margaret’ is a theatrical-pop piece with a touch of Amy Winehouse-like jazz and reflective yet blunt lyricism which wittily comments on the dark sides of society. Double standards; insecurity; trust issues and dealing with consequences are among some of the themes found in this track.

Ironically, this story is also reflecting the current global crisis – Margaret represents society (doesn’t know whom to trust or listen to) and its theft of choice. Eventually, she is choked by hypocrisy. There's always a price to pay:
The Murder of Margaret.

Luciana Valentina is a 23-year-old singer-songwriter, composer, actress and model who founded her band in 2019. After the successful release of her debut single ‘Wind Up Dolls’, Luciana was on continuous roadshows across renown venues in Sydney after which she was discovered and invited by Grammy-award-winning band ‘Los Amigos Invisibles’ to join their Australian tour.

Now Luciana Valentina is releasing her latest single in preparation to her new album ‘Black or White’ aiming to release November 2020.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Juanita Stein - The Mavericks.

Juanita Stein has released a new song, ‘The Mavericks’, from her upcoming third album, ‘Snapshot', which is set for release via Nude Records on 2nd October in all formats.

‘The Mavericks’ follows the recent release of the LP’s title track, which picked up early support from the likes of Mojo, Clash and 6 Music for Brighton-based, Australian songwriter, who first became known for her work as singer and guitarist in Howling Bells. The song carries on the theme that runs throughout the album, which was recorded following the sudden loss of Stein’s father in 2019.

As Juanita explains: ’’The Mavericks’ is a song that came together over a few years. The first half I’d already had written, the lyrics came in one blessed burst of lyrical expression, then I stashed it away, not knowing quite what to do with it. I was later able to complete it, whilst writing the songs for ‘Snapshot’. With the razor-edged perspective loss can bring, finding the right words became a lot easier for me. Sonically and lyrically, I wanted the song to rise and fall, swell and intensify, mirroring the cyclical nature of life.”

The Gina Furtado Project - Nicky William - Juanita Stein - Speaker Face

The Gina Furtado Project latest single 'The Things I Saw' has a new video, the song is described as a "unique blend of driving contemporary bluegrass and acoustic pop influences" which is spot on for this fabulous track. === Nicky William just released 'I Fell In Love With Her' along with a video that adds to the story, it's a superb song and what can I say, the vocals are simply stunning. === It's been a while since we last featured Juanita Stein so we welcome her back with the new song and title track from her next album 'Snapshot' a reminder of why we got more than a little excited about her music in 2018. === Speaker Face have just shared 'Phosphorescence' and it's a beautiful electronic song with notable vocals and a refined musical arrangement.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Gina Furtado Project - The Things I Saw.

The Gina Furtado Project has released a video for "The Things I Saw" the group's latest single. “The Things I Saw” — produced by Thomm Jutz is a unique blend of driving contemporary bluegrass and acoustic pop influences, and of personal memories with a universal spirit, exemplifying the evolution of today’s acoustic music scene through Furtado’s fresh, distinctive approach.

The song describes a personal, literal journey to a sacred and well-loved place in order to seek — and find — solace and redemption from a hectic world. "'The Things I Saw’ was inspired by my experiences growing up on the Shenandoah River,” Furtado says. “All throughout my childhood, I went to the river when I needed comfort of any kind. No matter what happened in my life, good or bad, the river was always the same. The plants and critters and smells and sounds became like old friends; always welcoming and beautiful in every way, and always more powerful than whatever it was that could possibly bring me down.”

“I imagined a secret society whose mission was to fight Hatred with Love,” she continues. “I've taken that little vision into my adult life, and enjoy trying to spot members of this secret society (and trying to be one myself!)....they can be flowers, animals, sunsets, people you pass on the street...anyone or thing who refuses to let darkness and negativity take over and instead chooses to exude pure and unstoppable love.”

Formed by innovative artist Gina Furtado, The Gina Furtado Project brings unique musicianship and songwriting that breaks free from the assumed constructs of traditional music modalities and makes a new musical statement influenced by emotion, played with the highest skill, and expressing an enormous verve and vitality.

Furtado, known for her work as the banjo player for Chris Jones & The Night Drivers, she has a long history with her banjo. Born and raised in Front Royal, Virginia, Gina began touring up and down the east coast in her tween years with her siblings, earning countless ribbons from fiddlers conventions, a strong reputation in the regional bluegrass scene, and a stamp from Bluegrass Today as “absurdly talented.” She later played in a number of regional acts before making her international touring debut with Chris Jones and the Night Drivers soon after joining the group in 2016. While touring, she is joined by Drew Matulich on guitar and Malia Furtado, her sister, on violin, who each bring experience and energy to the band.

Now based in Asheville, NC, Matulich grew up in Georgia and began playing guitar at 8.  While studying music in college he performed with several bands of various styles in and around Georgia and Florida before immersing himself in the Bluegrass scene of Western North Carolina. He has toured and recorded with Billy Strings, made a guest appearance on Roland White's album and shared the stage with the likes of David Grisman, Bryan Sutton, Sam Bush, Cody Kilby, and Sierra Hull.

Malia’s musical journey began at the age of 3 with classical violin lessons and took a turn, when she attended her first festival, Galax Old Fiddlers Convention, a few years later. Since then, she has performed with a number of different groups, taken home a range of prizes, graced the stage of numerous venues up and down the East Coast and given private lessons in both bluegrass and classical playing. Malia is the Director of Education at the Front Porch Music School in Charlottesville, VA, and currently teaches adult continued education courses in bluegrass fiddle at Blue Ridge Community College in Weyers Cave, VA.

Nicky William - I Fell In Love With Her.

Raised in a musical household, singer-songwriter Nicky William took inspiration from the likes of Joni Mitchell, Patti Smith and Nick Cave. Usingold Americana, to the itchy and edgy outsiders to mould his alternative-folk sound, the Swedish artist is set to drop his new offering ‘I Fell in Love with Her’ via Icons Creating Evil Art.

Since the release of his debut album ‘Set You Loved Ones Free, We Have You Surrounded’ in 2017, Nicky has perfected his craft by maturing his sound capabilities. As a result of experimenting with idiosyncratic alternative-folk and complex song-writing, the artist has since secured a signing with Stockholm-based label Icons Creating Evil Art.

Layered with a sensational blend of deep mellifluous strings and Nicky’s husky vocals, upcoming single ‘I Fell in Love With Her’ dwells deep into a love interest who not only captivates the singer-songwriters heart, but everybody else’s too. With others fascinated by her, the song highlights the feeling of self-doubt and not being good enough for that person.

Talking to us about the inspiration behind the track, Nicky tells us: “Fell in love is a song where the idea behind it is quite childish and naive, the feeling of not being desirable is probably pretty universal but this idea of a romantic interest that everyone is condemned to pine for in hopelessness may not be so realistic, but I still felt that it was the feeling I had felt many times and I wanted to convey that feeling in the song.”

Accompanying the new track is a sombre music video featuring Nicky and his desired flame. Directed by Claudio Marino, the visuals portray a rollercoaster of empty emotions and longingness. In the visuals, viewers see Nicky who metaphorically appears to be a ghostlike figure, who fails to be recognised by his love interest. No matter how close he tries to get to her, nothing is ever good enough as her attention is diverted elsewhere.

Juanita Stein - Snapshot.

Juanita Stein has announced her third album 'Snapshot' will be released via Nude Records on 2nd October in all formats. Juanita has now shared the album's title track, a wonderful introduction to the themes and the sounds of the record. According to Mojo the song " whoops and devastates about how grief unhinges memories like the harshest magic".

“It feels fundamental to understanding the devastation and eerie silence thrust upon us after his sudden death,” begins the Brighton-based, Australian songwriter Juanita Stein, discussing the moment of great sadness that inspired her new record.

As she says, “This allowed me the time and distance I so craved. Ben was deeply concerned with allowing the songs to breathe and to take the right shape. We laid down all the defining guitar parts and vocals which were then beds for the band to come in and lay their parts on.”

As the record began to take shape, Juanita “called on my brother, Joel Stein, (guitarist in Howling Bells) to play lead guitar, I knew only he could harness the exact frenzied energy needed for the songs. Both he and I were both going through something pretty momentous and I wanted to shift that energy into the music. Evan Jenkins on drums alternated between freeform and thunderous on some tracks, light and barely-there on others. Jimi Wheelwright on bass held it all together beautifully.”

The result is a record that feels crafted from a life lived as much as it was clearly excavated from loss. It’s a record that strives to capture more than a passing moment and succeeds in laying its hands on something bigger than most of us will ever fully understand.

Speaker Face - Phosphorescence.

"Phosphorescence" is a complicated love song for the west coast of Canada: British Columbia.

We feel so welcomed by the land and connected to the nature where Trent grew up, but recognize that many people were displaced to allow our presence.

"Phosphorescence" is a thank you letter to those who were here long before us, specifically the Coast Salish, and the early 1900s Japanese settlers, who were interned during WWII. We hope to see this beautiful place through their eyes.

We love the tactile hammer sounds of the rhodes, and the fingers plucking the violin, like a cascade of drips to help paint the west coast landscape. Ruby's voice was recorded three different times in unison and mixed all around your head, so it feels like you’re swimming in the ocean of her voice.

Johnny Mafia - Juanita Stein - Everything by Electricity - Vallens

Johnny Mafia - Big Brawl

Background - Johnny Mafia have long been high rollers in the burgeoning post-garage punk rackets gripping the country of France over the last few years; high-energy explosive acts like The Scaners, Escobar, Les Grys Grys, Les Lullies and The Arrogants have been burning up stages across Europe and USA with a vengeance, adding their craft to the long list of fine French exports suited to the more cultivated of music connoisseur.

The group hail from Sens, Burgundy (which is known more for it’s wheat and cereal production than rock ‘n’ roll) and bring a young, snotty, explosive and ferociously fun energy that drives audiences into a near-frenzy. Inspired by classics like The Ramones, T-Rex, and The Clash, they also draw heavily on contemporary acts like Ty Segall, Jay Reatard, and the Wavves.

With their signature reverb-soaked slap-back fuzzed out sonic attack, Johnny Mafia embodies punk attitudes and spirit of past and present with a firm foothold into their bright future as a young band ready to conquer the wider world of rock ‘n’ roll.

Johnny Mafia have established their reputation above all else on stage and over the last four years, the band have been a featured attraction across festivals in France; Festival Printemps de Bourges (FR) in 2014 and Festival Les Eurockéennes de Belfort (FR) in 2016 and were recognised with a laureat du FAIR in 2017.The band have just released the video single for “Big Brawl” after recently finishing recording and mastering their sophomore album with producer Jim Diamond and will release "Princes de l'Amour" Nov 9 on London's Dirty Water Records on vinyl/CD/cassette and have a tour of the US and Canada in the works. FACEBOOK.

If your up for a 'Big Brawl' you might wanna think twice with Johnny Mafia. I'm just going by the excess of show biz artificial blood in the video, so if that's not for you, the audio remains a feisty blast garage punk, in all it's glory rather than gory....

Juanita Stein - Easy Street.

Background - Juanita Stein, the Howling Bells frontwoman turned solo artist, releases her brand new single, Easy Street, taken from her upcoming second album, Until The Lights Fade, which will be released by Nude Records on 31st August.

Says Stein of the song, “Easy Street was written very immediately. Everything about it felt intuitive and direct. Touring the songs off [her 2017 solo debut] ’America’ for the last couple years has given some unique insight into people and their situations. You’re clocking up some good miles across various cities and countries, you see people getting by, doing what they can, being inventive with their realities. Hope/desperation isn’t limited to geography, everyone’s looking for an easy way out essentially. This song is about someone running from their reality and trying to find a better life for themselves.”

Juanita Stein’s second solo album arrives less than a year after her first, ‘America’, saw her exploring the iconography and cultural landscapes of a country that had always fascinated her from afar. Yet, while ’Until The Lights Fade’ is cut from the same musical cloth as its predecessor - the crepuscular twang of bar-room guitars, the keening romanticism of its melodies, the sparseness and simplicity of its arrangements - the album’s ten songs are concerned with thoughts, feelings, stories and characters rooted far closer to home.

“I feel like the two albums are different sides of the same coin,” Stein explains. “If ‘America’ was the starting point of a journey - the musical equivalent of me spreading my wings, but also treading carefully, trying to figure myself out having come from such an intense period of camaraderie in the band - then this record is me starting to gain a bit more traction, feeling more confident in where I’m coming from and what it is I’m doing.” WEBSITE.

Everything by Electricity - Place To Call My Own.

Background - Fronted and written by Yulia, who grew up in post-Soviet Siberia in the 90s, the track mirrors dark memories of exile and alienation. She tells us how she was “blacklisted” with behavioural problems amongst peers involved in crime and hard drugs at school for as much as playing electric guitar and sporting a Kurt Cobain hoodie. The track explores “escape” and finding solace in London to freely express herself.

The outfit, who have gained UK radio support from the likes of BBC Introducing, Radio X and more, merge digitalised haziness over a beating mechanical heart of euphoric instrumentation. Their sound is littered with strains of alienation in the form of bittersweet synthesisers and whiteout lyricism stirred from lead-vocalist Yulia’s Siberian upbringing. In their live line-up the three-piece also features Daniel (bass guitar, synthesisers) and Manoela (drums, pads).

Everything by Electricity now release their new single Place To Call My Own. Opening with skipping percussion, we’re led into blizzard-like arrangements that progressively form into shadows of melodies, remaining ever-modest yet central in the 7-minute mix. EbE escape clichés of atypical synth/dream-pop outfits, consequential of anchoring Yulia’s vocals deep in the composition with its instrumental counterparts. The result is a machine of sound, perhaps similar to early Crystal Castles with their gelled emotive electronica, yet carried with more subtlety.

Yulia on growing up in post-Soviet Siberia: “I was growing up in Siberia in the post soviet era in the 90s. I was 9 when I started my first band with school mates – this was a huge problem back then. Being in a band was considered to be a waste of time and in some cases as bad as taking drugs, especially for a girl, I didn’t fit in at all. My school had a “black list” for troubled kids with serious behavioural problems (those who were taking drugs or involved in any crime) and my parents received a phone call one day from a school principal advising them that I was included in that list just because I played an electric guitar in a band and wore a Kurt Cobain hoodie, it was totally unacceptable and I nearly got kicked out. WEBSITE.

Layer upon layer of refined synths and a gently paced beat give 'Place To Call My Own' a lush feel before the vocals begin. When they do, the melody and sweeping vibes of dream pop make this one outstanding and fabulous song, that just short of eight minutes duration, still had me wanting another listen straight after.

Vallens - If I Don’t Know You.

Background - Once toted as “a band you need to listen to” by Bust Magazine, Vallens are an undefinable quartet drawing from Abba, This Mortal Coil, film, and more influences than one would expect of their vexing and fervid sound.

With Dimmed In My Display EP set to be released early summer and their second full length album readying in the shadows, Vallens songwriting has expanded since their debut album, Consent, to the full band, including Colin J. Morgan (Cellphone), Marta Cikojevic (TOPS), and Devon Henderson (who additionally produced the EP). While thematically the EP reflects upon obscurity, explores isolation, and confronts the flood of social imagery, sonically Vallens newest material is “dark, heavy exercises in frenetic tension building.

Vallens play shows often and have been reshaping to become a more hypnotic and groove based project, leaning more on their melodic influencers, while still maintaining their dissonant unease. Often referred to as shoe-gaze, or any hashtag involving David Lynch, Vallens are now looking to explore many other topics, whether it be in subject, genre or concept — growing from these descriptors into a multifaceted unit and evolving into a whole different animal. Dimmed In My Display EP out July 6th, 2018 via Hand Drawn Dracula. FACEBOOK.

Pretty much two years to the day since we first (and last) featured Vallens I am reminded of what an enticing band they are. 'If I Don’t Know You' slowly unfolds from a gentle piano lead start into a powerful energised rocker, with the bands shoegaze sensibilities intact as they add even more drama to the song. The EP is eagerly awaited.

The Kat O Army - Frederick The Younger - Juanita Stein

The Kat O Army - I Don't Wanna Fight

Background - Kat O (ex- Kathematics, Kill TV) formed The Kat O Army in June 2017, releasing the single Victim of Truth (Minorities Unite) independently and launching the song with a successful Victorian tour, followed by NSW shows. Her passionate songs connect to the hearts of everyone who has been let down by friendships, relationships and even the government.

The new single I Don’t Wanna Fight was recorded at Toyland in Melbourne and produced and engineered by Adam Calaitzis. Kat played guitar and bass on the track. The song was written in 10 minutes as an ode to 2017, one of the most unbelievably argumentative years ever for Kat. Basically, she didn’t want to fight anymore. Raw and honest, the catchy pop/punk track is sung in Kat’s unmistakable Aussie accent.

Kat put up a video on Facebook of her performing the song unplugged in her music room which garnered an amazing response, including someone in her network wanting to cover the song.  The track was recorded, immediately resulting in airplay on community radio in Melbourne and Adelaide. The song was also put on Melomania radio’s playlist, alongside Pink, giving the track airplay in 40 countries around the world. TWITTER.

'I Don't Wanna Fight' opens as a stripped back rocker before powering up the energy. Kat O's vocals are feisty and ooze rock & roll vibes, in this no nonsense blast.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Frederick The Younger - Jessica.

Background - “Jessica” is the new song that Louisville’s psych-pop band Frederick The Younger is sharing from their new album which will be coming out later this year. The band is sharing the infectious song due to their spring tour in support of Houndmouth that is now underway.

Comprised of their soulful powerhouse vocalist Jenni Cochran, virtuosic guitarist Aaron Craker (who’s pulling double-duty playing guitar w/ Houndmouth on this tour), and their new rhythm section Jake Hellman (bass) and Dave Given (drums), Frederick The Younger is back with a newfound energy that they’ve channeled into the songwriting on their upcoming album. Channeling vintage melodic rock and roll through the lens of psychedelic garage pop, the band has drawn comparisons to everyone from St. Vincent and Angel Olsen, to The Zombies and Arcade Fire.

“Jessica” is the first taste of new music since the release of their debut album Human Child, which was produced by the veteran sonic wizard Kevin Ratterman (My Morning Jacket, Andrew Bird, Twin Limb). There is an earnestness to their new songs that rings true, the kind of sincerity born from experience. These songs feel alive and well-lived, tragic, beautiful, and contemplative, all with a solid hook. FACEBOOK.

We featured Frederick The Younger just a month ago with the song 'Human Child II' and now we have 'Jessica' from the bands next album due later this year. Their psych rock infused style has plenty of melodic hooks on the new track, other influences may be their but the band have developed their own sound, and it's a good one.

Juanita Stein - Forgiver.

Background - Juanita Stein, the Howling Bells front woman turned solo artist, will release a brand new single, Forgiver on 13th April (impacts 1 June). The single was co-written and produced by Brandon Flowers while Juanita was on tour with The Killers in Northern Europe this February.

Forgiver is the first taster of Stein’s upcoming second album, Until The Lights Fade, which will be released by Nude Records on 31st August. Says Stein of the song, “I remember wanting it to feel swaggering and wise, just like she is in the song. She a knowing seductress and he an endearing fool, completely at her mercy. It’s only once we get to the chorus that she shows any kind of vulnerability.”

“I’d written the bones of the song a while ago and began working on it again on the EU leg of the Killers tour. I’d managed to get Brandon to hear the song as was, with the intention of seeing if he could maybe help take it somewhere, and he ended up not only co-writing, but also producing the track, which we were able to record backstage during those last few days on the road.  I loved the spontaneity of the recording. As with the album itself, everything unfolded very instinctively.”

This our our fourth feature for Juanita Stein an artist that consistently impresses us with her charismatic music. 'Forgiver' is a gliding rock song that is cleverly arranged adding a few extra layers of sound as it flows. That it is a catchy teaser for her second album goes without saying.

The Golden Age of TV - Juanita Stein - L.A.D - The Dazies

The Golden Age of TV - Beast.

Background - Leeds’ art-rock 5-piece The Golden Age of TV make their first move of 2018, unveiling the smart and addictive Beast, a rhythmic stomper, destined for the luminous dancefloors of indie-discos of the future.

Whip-smart drums lock in with gloriously fuzzed out glam bass, disconcertingly swirling guitars bounce around your ears whilst vocalist Bea Fletcher sweetly delivers her personal tale of childhood anxiety:

"It’s telling a story from my childhood, during that cross-over period when I had to be more independent. It was little things; facing my fear of the dark or going to the toilet on my own without my mum standing outside the door. The change and stress manifested into dreaming and imagining a monster coming after me. I'd see it everywhere I went. It sounds a bit trippy. But I guess growing up is?"

The quintet have had a busy start to their career since forming just over a year ago. With only two tracks released, Dust and Between Each Brick, they grabbed the ear of BBC Radio 1 new music doyen Huw Stephens, as well as airplay from 6 Music and Amazing Radio.

The live side too has seen exciting opportunities for the group. Last summer, they sub-headlined the BBC Introducing Stage at Reading and Leeds festivals, as well as also taking in exciting support slots with Fickle Friends, Toothless and Alex Cameron. They were also able to strut their stuff with coveted slots at some of the UK’s premiere new music festivals, Live at Leeds and Liverpool Sound City. FACEBOOK.

'Beast' opens with a rhythmic synth driven beat and gradually moves into a more flowing song where the vocals are melodic and pleasing. The layers of sound intensify and the power really does build on this very engaging song.

Juanita Stein - I'll Cry (Acoustic).

Background - Juanita Stein will release the America Acoustic EP on 16th February 2018. The Howling Bells frontwoman turned solo artist, who released her America album (Nude Records) last July, recorded the EP at home in Brighton in between recent tour dates with The Killers and her own solo shows.

Says Stein: “I had been asked to record some acoustic tracks for a radio station in the US and it occurred to me whilst doing so just how intimate and special these recordings could be. Ultimately, that’s how all my songs are born: just my self and a guitar usually in my bedroom. So it feels like a deeply honest representation of the music, without any outside interference at all. I wanted them to remain sparse, just a few harmonies and layering. It’s an exercise in itself, leaving the songs bare as bones. A lot of my favourite music tends to be all encompassing or artfully restrained. I wanted this to be just so.”

Made up of the acoustic versions of songs from her acclaimed debut solo album, along with Stein’s cover of Johnny Cash’s A Thing Called Love, a song she often performs at her live shows.

Juanita Stein will rejoin The Killers for a string of European dates this February and March, before joining Bryan Ferry for his extensive spring tour, which starts in Cardiff on 9th April and concludes with shows at London’s Palladium (1 May) and Eventim Apollo (3 May).  She has also just been announced for her festival show this year as part of the bill for Black Deer, joining artists including Iron & Wine, Passenger and Jason Isbell at this celebration of Americana and Country music in its debut year, as well as appearing at SxSW in Austin, Texas in March. L.A.D - One More Night.

Background - L.A.D are a synth funk trio from Reading, England with a shared love of 80s nostalgia. Multi instrumentalists Jack and Luke, having spent years accumulating vintage synths, guitars and drum machines, have teamed up with ginger bombshell Natalie to update the music they love. After spending the last six months making all kinds of noises in the studio, the debut album is on its way.

They make truly epic Top Of The Pops style classics reminiscent of Madonna at her very pinnacle circa ‘Holiday / Get Into The Groove’ when she had Nile Rodgers bringing that Chic style heat to the mixing desk and consequentially tearing off the roof at every club the world over, however there is still a freshness that UK RnB artists like Kelela and Ray BLK are bringing to the clubs owing much to this sound that is present here too.

Their second single ‘One More Night’ which follows the acclaimed ‘Dance Floor’ which garnered love from the likes of Earmilk, Amazing Radio and Fame Magazine, strikes a slightly different chord. Think of a lonely hearts column in dystopian 80's future. A future where Synth wave rules and the classic power ballad never left our radios. A very emotive subject matter. What apparently didn't matter on the "Dance floor" does in the bed room. FACEBOOK.

Retro in some respects ‘One More Night’ benefits by modern production techniques, that add a deeper arrangement and superior sound quality, compared to the golden days of 80's synth pop music. More to the point, it's also a very catchy song!

The Dazies - Misery.

Background - After hitting the road in support of the "Seen a Ghost" split at the close of 2017, The Dazies have entered 2018 with a few more shows under their belt and on their schedule before they rest their weary DIY heads and start the creative process all over again. Before that the group brings you their video single for the track "Misery" - featured on the "Seen a Ghost" split. The "Misery" video was directed by: Richard TK Hawke, Michael Elliott Dennis, and M. Holland.

Recorded at Love Magnet in Roxbury, Ma and The Dazies home studio Cat Castle in Somerville. The ‘Seen A Ghost’ split is a true labor of love. Holland wrote/recorded the songs in a particularly reflective state of mind. The weight of wainig friendships and the disastrous political climate lead to songs like ‘Suffocate in the U.S.A’ and his hometown nod to Lawrence, Ma ‘Pawn Shop Guitars’. ‘Seen A Ghost’ was originally conceived as a solo release but the chemistry and friendship between Holland and Schneider had really blossomed in the last few years and Holland wanted to continue their recording streak. After six months of mixing/re-recording at their studio.

The Dazies finished what Holland thinks is his most well crafted songs along with his favorite lyrics that once again come across as diary-esq. The Dazies plan to tour well into the new year and couldn’t be more excited about finally having vinyl with their name on it. ‘Seen a Ghost’ comes from two real rock ‘n’ roll loving vinyl junkies. They’re hoping folks catch on! BANDCAMP.

Not to be confused with the wonderful Madness song of the same name, The Dazies 'Misery' is musically, a vibrant rocker with chunky riffs, accompanied by vocals that are passionate and pleasing. The video adds to the track in it's own off the wall manner, The Dazies meanwhile breathe some new life into rock & roll.
