Parliamo - Freya Beer - YOVA - La Faute

Parliamo - You’re An Animal.

A funk-laden guitar pop anthem filled with hazy melodies that flutter and float like the last rays of sun dipping behind the horizon on a languid summer day, “You’re An Animal” arrives as the first new music from Parliamo this year.

Taking primary inspiration from the laid-back electronica-infused indie pioneered by the likes of Primal Scream, Super Furry Animals or Blur, with a healthy dose of the dazed guitar-pop rhythms reminiscent of Swim Deep or Peace also detectable amidst its sunny substance matter; “You’re An Animal” finds the band facing up to our fear of failure with a fizzing new release.

As vocalist Jack Dailly explains of the track: “The lyrics [of “You’re An Animal”] centre on projecting your own failures and insecurities onto someone else in an argument: when you really should be having a go at yourself, you deflect the blame and double down. It quickly became an effective live number, with loads of people who had seen us live asking us when it would be released.”

Initially written over two years ago, “You’re An Animal” has been finessed to perfection at live shows and their home studio ever since. The final version was recorded, mixed and produced by Jamie Holmes at Castle of Doom Studios in Glasgow in 2023.

Freya Beer - Fantasy / Galore.

Her first new music of 2023, the “Fantasy” // “Galore” AA-side single arrives as Freya begins to etch out the successor to her acclaimed debut album ‘Beast’. Toying with that which tempts us in both lucid fantasies and shadowy realities, these two bold, dark and exhilarating new tracks find Freya Beer delving into what drives our deepest desires and showcasing two very different sides of her artistic abilities.

“You stretched your pegs out wide, slightly confused my appetite” teases Freya on “Fantasy” as she opens up the floor to a track of rapacious sexually-charged spills and raw garage rock thrills. Told through tactile, tantalising prose and prowling proto-punk riffs, this latest cut finds Freya celebrating the uncensored version of ourselves we become in our wildest daydreams. As Freya elaborates:

“Fantasy is an unfiltered exploration of self-discovery and expressing your thoughts in a fictional world. I wanted to write a song that emotes raw emotion and tells the listener to embrace their feelings in a positive way.”

On the flipside, “Galore” is an altogether more salacious affair that explores what can happen when those fictional pursuits and carnal desires boil over into real world infatuations with uncertain consequences. As Freya explains: “Galore is about people who are infatuated with something, almost bordering on ‘obsession’. The line “I’m your galore, you don’t want anyone else babe” depicts how this obsession is becoming a feeling of escapism and creating a fictional storyline for themselves.”

YOVA - Feel Your Fear.

Letting loose a runaway freight train of jumpy guitar rhythms and primal percussive rumblings, the new single from the duo of Jova Radevska and Mark Vernon is one intended to heighten the senses and toy with what drives our fears and failings. As Jova explains:

“”Feel Your Fear” is about the human’s fallible nature to form addictions in order to alleviate pain. We can do this with a person too: we can believe that their company will save us from the challenges we are facing and we cling to that, when in fact we haven’t addressed the real cause of those feelings. It is often our insecurity and un-dealt trauma that makes us cling to people/substances, addictions in general.”

Citing ESG, Gang of Four, King Sunny Adé, and early Talking Heads as being amongst the subliminal influences that played into the track, “Feel Your Fear” sees YOVA deftly update their dynamic brand of alternative pop music with hints of garage rock, Afropop and funk to gripping effect.

Produced by Mark Vernon and arranged by Rob Ellis, the track was recorded between Dorset and London and also features Daniel O’Sullivan of Grumbling Fur on bass and features the legendary Terry Edwards (PJ Harvey) on saxophone. Intending to create an unshakeable feeling of restlessness, Jova Radevska’s airy vocals toe a fine line between playful and impending, while its haunting baritone sax, sinuous bass, and meticulously timed blasts of trumpet and organ all play their part in the unsettling fabric of “Feel Your Fear”. As Vernon adds: “The sonic tapestry and rapid tempo of this track is written to convey a sense of heightened urgency: the impending sense of emotional claustrophobia and resulting fear is echoed in the narrative of Jova’s lyrics. A sense of one last rushed midnight dance before emotions inexorably spiral out of control and time literally gets swallowed up before our eyes.”

La Faute - The Crown.

A hidden gem from the frozen heart of Toronto, Canada, art school dropout and Sony Music Publishing artist La Faute (aka Peggy Messing) is releasing her third single “The Crown” from her upcoming debut Album, “Blue Girl Nice Day”.

La Faute is Messing’s dark, dreamy solo project. A visual artist, multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter originally from Winnipeg, Canada, she explores themes of surface vs. depth, longing, betrayal, mourning and desire. Using tenor electric guitar and obsolete hardware samplers, she created her captivating live show and released her debut EP just before the pandemic. She chose to pause performing live due to her health, and returned to focusing on creation, finding workarounds to the problem of isolation. She connected with fellow artists and producers in France, the UK, Canada and the US to create music during this time, most recently with LA-based Topher Mohr who produced her upcoming album.

She received unanimous praise for the first single from the album, ‘Blue Girl Nice Day’, in February 2023, an unsettling, haunting song inspired by the Milgram experiments of the 1960s. The song was accompanied by an eerie video that showed the artist making a bed in a windswept field with looming power lines in the background. Her second Single, “Watercolours” was equally highly praised, and featured a video of Messing night driving in the rain and getting drenched in a cold downpour. She has become increasingly interested in filmmaking, art-directing and shooting music videos for each song herself, inspired by French new wave and film noir aesthetics.

Cuddle Magic - Baron Minker - Castle Black - Andria Piperni - Freya Beer

Cuddle Magic have given us a feel for their forthcoming album with 'What If I' and its an exquisite chamber pop song, we've received two other tracks and I have to say this is a very promising album. === Baron Minker shares the addictive new song 'Anthem of the Rich and the Bored' his genre mixing music, is impressive and some. === Brooklyn's Castle Black have a new video for 'Dead In A Dream' where the bands post punk influences combine with some powerful rock vibes. === Montreal singer song-writer Andria Piperni just released 'Coming Home To You' and it's one of those songs that stands out in the seemingly crowded Neo Soul/R&B world. === We are a little bit proud to have been ahead of the crowd with Freya Beer and her last single and are equally content to just share her latest song 'Arms Open Wide' which is equally hook filled and wonderful.

Cuddle Magic - What If I.

Cuddle Magic—the New York/Philadelphia-based chamber-pop sextet—today announced their upcoming full-length Bath is releasing on Northern Spy Records. The album's lead single "What If I" is out now and, like the full album of single takes, was recorded entirely in a bathroom nestled amid 23 microphones and the space's natural reverb.

“What if I” is the first and only song in 15 years of being a band that every member of Cuddle Magic wrote a song together," says Cuddle Magic guitarist/vocalist Benjamin Lazar Davis. "The track started when Cole Kamen-Green brought in this amazing seed that was a little loop he found in a Johann Sebastian Bach chorale.

Then Christopher McDonald joined us to work on another section that would later become the bridge. Much later, Kristin Slipp and I took out the old seed and soon had the chorus melody, & it was that night that Alec Spiegelman and David Flaherty showed up and together we would complete the lyrics to the song and put the finishing touches on the melody and form."In keeping with the spirit of the album, Cuddle Magic will be announcing a contest this week wherein fans enter to win essential bathroom supplies such as bidets, squatty potties, and toilet paper simply by following the band’s Spotify page.

Baron Minker - Anthem of the Rich and the Bored.

A beautiful, dreamy endeavor - Baron Minker carves out a thoughtful balance between worlds both savage and serene. What results is a sound like the singularity. An underground cadre of Terminator-like cyborgs who long not for violence, but for love and existential cohesion. It’s Skynet’s art rebellion. It’s an exercise in restraint and self-indulgence. The collective dissonance the album paints comes together like a scene of androids and humans together in search of meaning amid the unfolding of a new universe.

Blending indie sheen with understated vocals and a penchant for eclectic absurdity, Baron Minker delivers liquid sonancy with vivid, imaginative landscapes that melt into deep, reflective pools of sound. This self-titled debut weaves in and out through a sparkly mix of shoegaze and 70’s psychedelia and by the time you’re out the other side, you’ve traveled lightyears. The journey across these electric cosmos stretches space and time and lands firmly on satisfying ground. Simply put, this album is a lot of fun.

The album traverses the world it creates with urgency and attentiveness. Lyrical explorations of the ever changing nature of human interactions, both within society and the self, texture the tracks. There are moments like ‘Anthem of the Rich and the Bored’ saturated with dread and hysteria that move into electro-grooves of the dystopian ‘Covered in Concrete’. Allowing itself moments of tranquility, ‘Dodgeball’ is a rippling, well placed refueling in this interplanetary journey. The ethereal and self-reflecting ‘Cocomo Hum’ blends beautiful, swirling vocals with electric smoothness that feel like a conversation between a moon and nearby satellites, while the closing track ‘Nice Chompers’ addresses despair and the hope that rises from it’s conquering. All in all, Baron Minker offers up a smooth, deep, personal, connected electricity (a connectricity, if you will) that grows more pleasant with each listen.

Stay tuned as Baron Minker announces more material leading up to his June release, and watch “  "Anthem of the Rich and the Bored,”” to get a taste of what the future holds!

Castle Black - Dead In A Dream.

Brooklyn's Castle Black are thankful that they can share their new video for “Dead in a Dream” during a time of social isolation, when they otherwise would not be able to create a music video in quite the same way.  Their original plan to have a live show event with special video screening has been canceled, but they can still celebrate the video through online means to mark the occasion.  Bars are closed, more shows are canceled, and music fans and bands alike are adjusting to our new reality.  The video, shot last August in Brooklyn, NY, was filmed and directed by the talented Jeff Allyn Szwast, who also filmed and directed their videos for “Dark Light” and “Broken Bright Star.”

Castle Black has been steadily releasing widely praised EPs over the last several years, and are a band now known for their unique post-punk math-grunge style, relentless work ethic, intense live performance, and love of the road.   With their March tour canceled, and shows for the foreseeable future canceled, the band, and bands in general, are operating in a completely new environment.   For a band as busy and productive as Castle Black, this is a time to think of new ways to reach people, especially people who are feeling the emotional effects of social isolation.

This week the band premieres a new visual star, with their music video for "Dead in a Dream," which comes off Castle Black's EP Take Her My Life, released last November.  The EP received wide adoration and accolades from both fans and press alike.  “Their songs defy the average and are powerful and hard-hitting, always focused on hitting that trademark hook you’re waiting for.” – PureGrain Audio  “[Dead in a Dream] is a creepy, saber toothed masterpiece … It’s one of the half dozen best songs of 2019 so far …” – NY Music Daily

The video unexpectedly soars with social relevance, giving viewers an ebb and flow among various states of dream and reality.  Social isolation can bring about the need for a strong imagination, as well as a strong reliance on memories to re-create emotions that may not be easily accessible during this time.  Celent notes, “Having this video, which is like a relic of a time now seemingly so far in the past, is really special for us, because we are now living in a vastly different environment.  We could not make this video now.  We have no idea when things will be even slightly back to normal to make another video, let alone to get back to playing shows and to recording an album.  The recurring lyric in ‘Dead in a Dream’ – ‘take me back in time’ – has taken on new meaning in this new world. This video, for us, is a brief jaunt back in time, a brief reprieve from everything horrible that is happening.”

The themes in "Dead in a Dream" further explore Castle Black’s love of challenging reality and exploring dark themes in a cinematic way, as can be seen in their two other music videos also directed and filmed by Szwast, “Dark Light” and “Broken Bright Star.”  Once again, Szwast shows his artistic prowess in “Dead in a Dream” when it comes to framing, mood and elevating ambiguity, to perfectly match the music. The band chose to use masks from the very talented Carolyn Watson-Dubisch of Artisan Masks; these handmade paper maché masks lend an eeriness and a mysterious quality that completes the dream aesthetic of those scenes.

Andria Piperni - Coming Home To You.

Montreal singer-songwriter Andria Piperni blends neo-soul, R&B, and jazz to create a sound that feels both fresh and familiar. Her love for creative expression started as a young girl, often found dancing and singing to R&B sensations such as Alicia Keys and Janet Jackson.

While spending much of her time training and teaching as a dancer, scribbling lyrics in notebooks, and learning piano from her father, she developed a deep passion for storytelling and human connection through music. Inspired by both the intricacies of everyday life and the narratives of her vivid dreams, Andria’s music combines authenticity and fantasy to craft a compelling and meaningful experience.

In November 2018, her debut single Say Something made its way onto Canada’s R&B/Soul iTunes chart and garnered acclaim from EARMILK, Vents Magazine, Bong Mines, and more. Andria has since released three singles, earning spots on major Spotify playlists such as New Music Friday Canada and Just Vibing, and has collaborated with a variety of artists including writing and featuring on house DJ Andrew Pololos’ hit single Never Be The Same, which spent several weeks on Spotify’s Viral 50 Canada chart. Her music has also been played on CBC and Stingray radio stations worldwide.

Freya Beer - Arms Open Wide.

Follow up to January’s magnificently received Dear Sweet Rosie, receiving great support at 6Music notably by Lauren Laverne and Marc Riley (who had Freya in for a live session), Freya Beer returns with new single ‘Arms Wide Open’ (produced by Pete Hobbs from The Boy Least Likely To who also produced Mostar Diving Club).

Alongside Freya’s tender vocals and thick guitar tones, it features an incessant, tribalistic driving drum beat from I Am Kloot drummer Andy Hargreaves.

Regarding the this new release, Freya says: ‘I tried to convey a ritual style sound accompanied by a tribal drumming beat which drives the track forward.

The tubular bells helped contribute towards the overall ceremonial atmosphere of the song. Lyrically, I’ve experimented with exploring the subject of talking about the darker undertones of a relationship’.

The Phantom Broadcast - The Just Joans - Freya Beer

The Phantom Broadcast recently released Antiquities Volume 2, which follows on not surprisingly from Volume 1 released earlier this year. Well we have them both as this band really do explore some fabulous musical directions resulting in some really fine indie, post rock and other musical influences within their songs. === Less than a month since we first featured them The Just Joans are back with a new single 'The One I Loathe The Least' it's another helping of gorgeous, melodic and stylish indie pop. === Freya Beer has a brand new single and video for 'Dear Sweet Rosie' a simmering alt rocker that's full of addictive hooks.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Phantom Broadcast - Antiquities (Volume 1 and 2).

The Phantom Broadcast’s Antiquities Vol II was released on Friday, Nov 1 and it follows Antiquities (Vol I), which was released in April of this year. Both EPs have been compiled on a single, vinyl LP that was released on Tuesday, Nov 5.

The band are: Evan Opitz - Vocals/Guitar, Lucy Little - Violin/Vocals, Dave Hollis - Guitar/Vocals, Nick Soria - Bass, Colin Rambert – Drums.

The Phantom Broadcast creates music that pushes the boundaries of indie and post rock with the influences of folk, jazz, classical, and metal tendencies. The results yield dynamic instrumentation where creativity and emotion are paramount in the composition of each song. Aiming to construct an architectural sonic space, the five band members collaborate on storytelling and presentation.

Having released three full lengths and two Eps since forming in 2013, the band has grown, mutated, amputated, and grown some more with each recording. After almost two years of writing and recording, The Phantom Broadcast released Antiquities on limited-edition vinyl. The themes explored on the album deal with the challenges of maintaining good mental health, the anxiety of with living and thriving in a large city like Chicago, and the hardships of the mundane. Thanks to an incredible amount of support via Kickstarter, the record was pressed to wax and is available via all online streaming platforms, at shows, and in record stores throughout Chicago.

The Just Joans - The One I Loathe The Least.

The Just Joans’ new single “The One I Loathe The Least” is taken from their forthcoming album The Private Memoirs and Confessions of the Just Joans, due out on 10 January via Fika Recordings.  “The One I Loathe The Least” (premiered over at God Is In The TV) is a song about friendship and finding someone who hates the same things that you do. A shared disinterest can be as powerful as a shared interest, and there is often something triumphant in these relationships when it feels as though it’s just you and them against the world.

The Private Memoirs and Confessions of the Just Joans is a deeply personal collection of songs that hazily recall the past and contemplate the futility of the future. At the forefront remain the mischievous lyrics and heartfelt vocals of siblings David and Katie Pope, aided and abetted by Chris Elkin on lead guitar, Fraser Ford on bass guitar, Arion Xenos on keyboards and Jason Sweeney on drums.

The Private Memoirs and Confessions of the Just Joans is a veritable smorgasbord of misery, longing and unrequited love; stories of small town resentments, half-forgotten school friends, failing relationships and awkward workplace conversations. As David explains: “It’s a collection torn from the pages of the diary I haven’t kept over the past 25 years. There are songs about places and people I vaguely remember, feelings I think that I once may have felt and the onset of middle-aged ennui.”

Despite entering new territory with the addition of brass and strings, they have nevertheless maintained the DIY ethos that made them darlings of the underground indie-pop scene, with each song on the album recorded and produced by the band in various gloomy bedrooms around Glasgow.

Freya Beer - Dear Sweet Rosie.

Freya Beer began her songwriting journey at the tender age of 10, this led to her performing her lyrics at the age of 16 accompanied by just her guitar.

During her time studying ‘Music Performance’, Freya Beer self-released her debut single “Bike Boy” in 2018. The single gained a positive reception from the likes of BBC Introducing and an array of music blogs. “Bike Boy” was quickly followed by the release of “Six Months”, which also received a positive reception and led to a BBC Introducing Solent Live Lounge Session and feature on Tom Robinson’s BBC Radio 6 show as well as BBC Wales.

Freya Beer’s upcoming single, ‘Dear sweet Rosie’ was recorded early this year in Manchester. The song draws from a number of literary influences including Allen Ginsberg’s ‘An Asphodel’ and Anna Sewell’s ‘Black Beauty’.

Alongside Freya’s thick guitar riff and tender vocals, I Am Kloot drummer Andy Hargreaves adapts a Led Zeppelin-esque drumming style to the song which creates a non-toppling wall of sound.

Dec 4 - 1865, Southampton (w/ Dr John Cooper Clarke)
Jan 20 - The Social, London (w/ TheBoy Least Likely To)
