Lucy Kruger & The Lost Boys - Evening Train.

Following on from the release of her previously shared single ‘Evening Train’ earlier this year, Berlin based South African Lucy Kruger now returns with The Lost Boys to announce the details behind her new studio album ‘Transit Tapes (for women who move furniture around)’, which lands on the 2nd June 2021 via Unique Records.

Written by Lucy Kruger and forged in a tiny 34°c rehearsal space in Berlin, ‘Transit Tapes’ melts dreamy indie rock with dark folk and returns 12 pensive tracks exploring restlessness and a yearning to feel alive. This project is the first time Kruger has worked with drummer Martin Perret, guitarist Liú Mottes and bassist Andreas Miranda, who form The Lost Boys. The depth that The Lost Boys add is clear on the dramatic soundscape in A Paper Boat or the slow rumbling climb on A Stranger’s Chest.

‘Transit Tapes’ resumes the introspective exploration of Kruger’s 2019 release ‘Sleeping Tapes for some girls’ but has a marked shift in direction. Where sleeping tapes is quiet and behind a closed door, transit tapes is about opening that door, and exploring what is beyond the bedroom. There is a pull between loneliness and a want for independence, between a need for exploration and the safe comfort of familiarity. The reassuring knowns collide with a fear of slipping into old habits. These themes are expedited by Kruger’s relocation from Cape Town to Berlin 2018, when she began writing the album.

For Lucy, “the songs begin in the bedroom, as with Sleeping Tapes, but with an eye on the window and a hand on the door. There is a restlessness. A kind of building up of courage and the acknowledgement of a fear I had developed around making too much noise or causing too much of a scene. How are we supposed to discover who we are if we are not allowed to make a mess? To leak, spill, sweat, spit, shriek. Sometimes playing involves getting scratched or wounded. Laughing. Weeping… Transit Tapes is a gentle and sometimes not so gentle reminder to take off my winter coat and run naked like a wild thing towards the water.”

Evie Sands - Beautiful Lie.

 Evie Sands sought inspiration as she got in gear for a long-awaited new album after a two-decade wait. “I was in a meditation, a thing I only do once in a while,” she says. “And these words came to me: ‘Forgive yourself. Get out of your own way. All will follow.’” Putting that into practice, she got home and within hours had the song that would become the title track — and philosophy — of her new release, Get Out of Your Own Way, due out April 23, 2021 on R-Spot Records.

“I was just compelled,” she says. “The song kind of wrote itself.” Not every song on the album came about with that kind of rush. But the sense of it, the electricity and openness and optimism of it, is infused throughout this bristling set of songs — tales of overcoming hurdles, rebounding from heartbreak, finding light in darkness. It’s there in the healthy squint of “The Truth Is in Disguise,” the shining-through of “My Darkest Days,” the wrenchingly hopeful “Lovin’ You Enough,” the playful cultural critique of “Scandal du Jour,” and the expansively inspirational “If You Give Up.”

More than a collection of songs, this is an album with an arc, with interconnected stories to tell, the way classic albums used to be made. And it covers a lot of ground in sound and style, borne out by Sands’ deft arranging, bold playing and production. “Don’t Hold Back” is a brisk companion to the title song. “Beautiful Lie” looks at the sunny side of a relationship ending, with the epiphany of its central line, “We’ll both survive to love another day.” “Another Night” is a guitar-driven wild ride over to “the other side of the line.” “Leap of Faith,” melding some of Sands’ ’60s and ’70s pop and soul passions, asks, “Is this original sin, or just the state that I’m in?” “After Tonight” poignantly steps into the void of heartbreak. And a live favorite making its recorded debut, “Don’t Look Back, Don’t Look Down,” ties it all together, an active reminder to keep moving forward, the very theme that runs through the album and brought it to be in the first place.

Elise Davis - Summertime.

Nashville-based singer/songwriter Elise Davis shares “Summertime,” the latest single off her new album Anxious. Happy. Chill. that releases on April 16 via Tone Tree. As her winter worries slip away into a haze of reverb, Davis’ breezy lyrics and homemade, lo-fi visualizer illustrate dreams of a slow, Southern summer. “Summertime” was featured this morning by Audiofemme, who called it “a sunshine-soaked version of ‘My Favorite Things’ – if Maria von Trapp had been a bit of a pothead” and said “the song is a balm after an apocalyptic winter, nothing if not soothing to the ears.”

“I have dealt with depression throughout my life. I always notice it is more frequent and intense in the cold. I guess that's what is often called seasonal depression,” explains Davis. “Aside from that, my soul has just always resonated with warm weather. As a kid in Arkansas I never wanted to be inside when it was warm, and I've remained that way my whole life.” She continues, “In the summer I am always sitting on the porch or wandering my yard. As the cold set in this past year I wrote this song. It is a simple anthem of my love of summer and my constant excitement for when it will return. I can sit outside at night listening to the bugs, the calmness, the fireflies, and flowers. It is in those times I am happiest.”

Written during the rush of a new relationship and recorded just days after her wedding, Anxious. Happy. Chill. is the happiest album Elise Davis has made. The independent, no-boys-allowed anthems that made up her first two albums are swapped out for lean, guitar-driven rockers and lushly-layered love songs that remain every bit as resilient and empowered as before. Davis recently shared two other songs off the album, the blissful “Yellow Bed” and the thoughtful “Empty Rooms,” which was featured by Apple Music’s Record Bin Radio with Kelly McCartney, The Boot and The Bluegrass Situation. The new tracks follow her three other singles released in 2020, “Ladybug,” “The Grid” and “Flame Color.”

Sea Fever - Crossed Wires.

Manchester outfit Sea Fever unveil the visuals for their recently released single ‘Crossed Wires’.

Directed by art director and photographer Ksenia Bilyk and director Emily Jade Hagan, the striking visuals perfectly depict the song’s lyrics by drawing up a vision of a dystopian world pulling on themes of lockdown and environmental destruction.

The video was shot over the course of two nights across several districts in Berlin during the current lockdown restrictions with a small crew; these conditions didn't limit the two creatives’ ambitious vision of a sci-fi world. Designer Nikolas Wunderlich; B41303 created the bespoke pieces worn by the actors, while graphic artist Sash Bobrov enhanced the dystopian world they sought to create by adding motion graphics.

Sea Fever is a five piece collective fronted by Iwan Gronow (Haven, Johnny Marr) on vocals and guitars, alongside singer Bethany Cassidy (Section 25), the collective also features New Order’s Tom Chapman and Phil Cunningham - with Tom on bass, guitars, synths and programming and Phil on guitars. Powering the band’s pulsing beats is Elliot Barlow, who is joined on the band’s debut by New Order’s drummer Stephen Morris.

Sea Fever explains that their coming together as a unit felt inevitable: “We’d wanted to work with each other for ages, so when we finally sat down in the studio, the band just seemed to come together naturally. It felt like we were really free to explore the kinds of music that have always inspired us, we dug right through the record crates of our minds to shape the sound of Sea Fever.”

Emily Taylor Hudson - Hearts We Wanna Break.

Rock/pop singer/songwriter Emily Taylor Hudson picked up all the pieces with this, her latest single — “Hearts We Wanna Break."

This stand out cut off the LA-based artist’s debut EP, Love Is a Dirty Word, yearns with a grinding sorrow cast amongst velvet vocals and driving rock n’ roll.

“‘Hearts We Wanna Break’ was written about a friendship I thought would last a lifetime, and the brutal feeling of betrayal ripping apart the good between me and someone I loved,” she shares. “This song represents the moment I realized that love is a dirty word.”

Her talents were fostered from an early age, growing up in a creative family with her parents, Cindy Williams (Laverne & Shirley) and Bill Hudson (The Hudson Brothers), and her brother, musician, Zak Hudson.

As far as uber-talented features on the five-track release go, Hudson didn’t need to look far; she got her best friend, musician and lead guitarist, Billy Newsome, to help produce the sound she was going for, and her brother, Zak, to produce the rhythm section. She then called upon J.P. Hesser at Castaway 7 Studios for mixing; it was mastered at Golden Mastering.

Mess Esque - Big Old Blue.

Mick Turner (Dirty Three) & Helen Franzmann (McKisko) announce their new collaboration 'Mess Esque' with their first single along with a video made by Denny Ryan and featuring Coco Barker-Bamber, Mick Turner and Helen Franzmann.

"Even though both Dirty Three and my solo output are instrumental, I was writing material that I felt needed lyrics. Being a below-average singer myself I was looking for a vocalist/lyricist to help turn these music ideas into songs.  I spoke about it with my friend, sound engineer/producer extraordinaire Nick Huggins. Nick introduced me (remotely) to Helen who he knew well, he had produced her last album (under the moniker McKisko) and said he thought she’d be interested in collaborating." - Mick Turner.

The release's first single, 'Big Old Blue', perfectly pairs Mick's gentle and warm guitar with Helen’s optimistic songwriting and sleepy tender whispers. Speaking about the single's intention, Helen reveals - “Big Old Blue is a nod to the natural world as a soothing salve. For me anyway. Also I watched Luc Bresson's 'The Big Blue' around the time of writing this song which may have influenced the name.”

The words came together as Helen was falling asleep one night and she was able to capture them on her phone, recording in the early hours of the morning after.

“My house is close to a noisy road so recording had to happen at 2am to catch vocals without traffic/street spill. All of the vocals for this album were done in my bedroom or bathroom at that time. I’d record, send and fall into bed without doing a whole lot of listening back.”

Art Bergmann - Entropy.

Art Bergmann’s music is meant for our current times. As we struggle to make sense of world events and the conflicts they have spawned, Art’s songwriting – as it has consistently done for the past four decades – cuts through the bullshit and hypocrisy with unflinching focus with the aim of finding some remnants of humanity that will pull us through.

It’s what used to be called “punk rock” when Art first established his reputation in Vancouver during the late 1970s, even though he’s never been a fan of that term. Yet, his status as one of Canadian punk’s foundational artists remains unquestionable, to the extent that in late 2020 he became the first of his peers to receive the Order of Canada, an honour bestowed upon the country’s most revered cultural figures.

Art’s latest album, Late Stage Empire Dementia, will be released May 21, 2021 -- also Endangered Species Day -- on Toronto-based (weewerk), and pointedly demonstrates why he deserved the OC. On eight songs that sonically run the gamut from the jagged, speaker-shredding rock he’s long been known for, to the experimental, acoustic-based soundscapes he introduced on his 2016 Polaris Music Prize long-listed album The Apostate, he takes aim at political corruption, the dual unchecked epidemics of guns and drugs, and the plight of refugees yearning for a better life.

Aeroplane Mode - In A State.

Melbourne dream-pop 4 piece Aeroplane Mode are ready to hit the skies again with their sophomore single and videoclip for 'In A State'. 

Mastered by Joe Carra (Babe Rainbow, San Cisco) the band have been able to create their own take on the dream-pop genre with rich jangle guitars, sweeping synths and honest lyricism. 'In A State' was inspired by the notion of growing up and the acceptance that comes with embracing change. As the band's bassist and songwriter Carlos explains: "The main concept that ‘In A State’ explores is that of a typical boy-meets-girl scenario, and the butterflies associated with a first crush". Exploring different vocal aesthetics and soundscapes, the single leans into a more upbeat tune and borrows the vocals of band's guitarist Brandon. "It is our mission with this single to make clear to our audience that we have two frontpeople in the band." continues Carlos.

Releasing alongside a video clip, the video features a series of the band playing amongst different colour washes, between playful scenes of lead singer Brandon, that embraces the band's aesthetic of nostalgic vaporwave, full of soft and dreamy textures. Recorded at Red Door Studios in Collingwood and produced by Melbourne based creative Nick Bond.

Having only released the one single 'Settle Down', Aeroplane Mode caught the attention of notable industry figures including James Tidswell (Violent Soho) who released the song on his Domestic La La Record Club and Brae Fisher of Dear Seattle who has taken them on for management. Along with this the band have been played on TOPS on Triple J Unearthed and received national radio play on Triple J, as well as being added to Spotify Editorial playlist ‘fuzzy’.

Jillette Johnson - Many Moons.

Jillette Johnson has released a celestial music video for her reflective single “Many Moons.” The track is off her latest album It’s a Beautiful Day and I Love You, which just released on February 12.

“‘Many Moons’ is a coming of age story, and a reflection on all the phases of my life so far,” explains Jillette. “I worked with the super talented Grant Claire to make a video that told the story of where I came from, where I am now, and where I believe I’m headed. I wanted to use lots of color and to make it feel like a spacey fever dream, where all these disparate worlds kind of collide into one.”

It’s a Beautiful Day and I Love You injects Jillette’s intimate, piano-written songs with irreverent lyrics, buoyant pop melodies and a shot of guitar-driven, alt-rock muscle. Produced by Joe Pisapia and written entirely by Jillette, the album has garnered praise from Rolling Stone, NPR Music, Refinery29, No Depression and more.

PEP - Like a Movie / Run.

PEP the NYC-based nostalgic pop group featuring frontwoman Karys Rhea (former drummer of Starlight Girls) is sharing a surprise two-video farewell for singles “Like a Movie” and “Run”, self-released Friday, February 26. This goodbye marks the end of a six-year run for a locally beloved band and celebrates music born out of Brooklyn venues in the 2010s.

“Like a Movie” is a haunt of doo-wop dream sauce, equal parts lovesick and buoyant. It comes with a silky video (dir. Dorian Duvall), shot with Rhea’s actual ex-boyfriend, going through the motions of a contrived love story fantasized and divine. “Run” is a glittering and joyful good time, previously released in 2017 but now with a brand new video, composed of careful quick harmonies, jangly splashes of color, and extremely catchy bass lines.

PEP originally began as the solo project of Starlight Girls drummer Karys Rhea. In the fall of 2011, she started humming doo-wop and Mo-town style melodies while practicing monotonous drum rudiments for hours at a time. These drum parts and vocal melodies became the foundation for PEP’s debut album, … Presenting PEP!, released in 2017.

After years of settling into a tight-knit act, PEP says farewell this year with the release of a new single, “Like A Movie”. Their updated brand of 60s doo-wop (nu-wop…if you will), became a seven-piece live outfit with back-up singers and choreographed moves reminiscent of retro pop girl groups. PEP is celebrating with their goodbye, years of music built out of Brooklyn venues in the 2010s, and a culture unabashedly retro but with a dreaminess that captured the hearts of listeners for a feel-good nostalgia PEP created with their tunes, fits, and fun.

Romanie - I'm Anything (But Myself Around You).

Melbourne based Romanie unveils her intimate new single  Anything (But Myself Around You). Produced by James Seymour (Feelds, Merpire) at Small Time Group, and mastered by Isaac Barter, the track was written in February 2020 right before Covid changed our lives significantly.

Speaking about the inspiration for  Anything (But Myself Around You), Romanie says, The song is about how everyone wants to show their best selves to social media, at work, even to their close circle of family and friends. We always try our best to be happy but I think sometimes we also just need to be a bit more real and call out if it's not okay. Sometimes we find ourselves in situations where we want to speak out against someone, but we don't really dare to break the peace.
Noting names like Lucy Rose, Julia Stone and Phoebe Bridgers as inspirations, Romanie opens her heart in her songs unveiling melancholic and sometimes personal topics of moving from her home country of Belgium to her new base in Melbourne.

I made the big trip across the ocean to Melbourne in October 2019 to start a new adventure at the other side of the world. Leaving everything behind that felt familiar - insecurity and overthinking were my first few friends I unpacked from my suitcase. I had to start over what I had left behind in Belgium (playing shows regularly, releasing my first EP Feelings, having a good network and friends). Seeing all the creative energy and talent in Melbourne, I soon got a bit overwhelmed and started to worry I would never find my feet in the music industry. This creative energy however, made me want to work hard and practice my craft to grow and figure out where I want to go with my music. I was very lucky to land in a network where I am inspired every day. I think I've never written as many songs as I did in the past year. - Romanie

Elise Davis - Empty Rooms.

Nashville-based singer/songwriter Elise Davis released a new song “Empty Rooms” from her forthcoming album Anxious. Happy. Chill. out on April 16 via Tone Tree. The song premiered on Apple Music’s Record Bin Radio with Kelly McCartney over the weekend and was featured by The Boot, who called the album "...a 10-song record about falling in love and changing perspectives." Last month, Davis announced the new collection with “Yellow Bed,” following the release of three singles in 2020 (“Ladybug,” “The Grid,” and “Flame Color”).

“I started writing this song right before the pandemic, around February 2020,” explains Davis. It began as a reflection of how I have spent my whole adult life. I began writing songs when I was 12 years old and never looked back. I've played in many empty rooms, coffee shops, hotel lobbies, restaurants, dive bars - I've also played in front of thousands of people in sold out clubs, theaters, music festivals. At the end of the day, regardless of the ups and downs, I know that playing music is what makes me feel whole and how I want to spend my time on this earth.  After writing this the pandemic became in full swing and the reality of playing live music completely changed. It is interesting because now this song has added layers of meaning. Rooms all over the world that are usually full, are now empty rooms.”

Anxious. Happy. Chill. was recorded just days after wrapping her honeymoon in Arizona, where she finished writing the album in the Sonoran Desert outside Tucson. Davis recorded the album with producer Teddy Morgan (Carl Broemel) at his studio in Nashville, TN. With the Covid-19 pandemic already in full swing, Davis and Morgan worked together for a month while maintaining their physical distance, communicating through the glass windows of the studio's isolation booths and playing the majority of the instruments themselves. Drummer Fred Eltringham (Sheryl Crow, The Wallflowers) joined them for a single day to lend the album its unique, percussive pulse.

“Making this album was a unique experience to say the least. Normally, I go in with a band and we all sit around and play through songs. We hang out and have drinks, making it a social and creative experience. This time my producer and I were never in the same room. We wore masks to get to our spots in the studio, then spoke through glass on headphones,” explains Davis. “For 8 years I wrote for publishing companies in Nashville that set me up on scheduled co-writes. Those experiences helped me grow as a writer and I learned a lot. But to write this album almost entirely on my own brought me back to my roots. At the end of the day I prefer writing on my own more than anything, and I got back in touch with that again. I also played guitar on most of this album which I don't usually do. I usually hire guitar players whose skills are better than mine. But, me playing on the recordings makes them feel different. I hear myself in them more. This album is about love, success/failure, dislike of social media, aging, summertime, and most importantly, it's honest. I am so happy to be sharing my third child, Anxious. Happy. Chill., with the world.”

Anna Leone - Blue Water Highway - Everything by Electricity - John Paul Keith - Elise Davis

Anna Leone - Once.

Anna Leone has released a new single ‘Once’, produced by Paul Butler (Michael Kiwanuka, Hurray For The Riff Raff) and released via AllPoints/Half Awake. Released alongside a stunning video shot on The Azores, the new single follows 2020’s ‘Wondering’ - also produced by Butler - which arrived close on the tail of Stockholm native Anna’s win at the 2020 Music Moves Talent Awards (alongside Flohio, girl in red and Pongo). Leone emerged in 2018 with her widely applauded debut EP ‘Wandered Away’, drawing fans at 6Music including Lauren Laverne & Guy Garvey, alongside Ones To Watch tips from Spotify and Youtube, and over 18 million streams online. ‘Once’ is streaming across all platforms , alongside the new video, from here.

Rueful but unmistakably hopeful, ‘Once’ considers naivety, regret and efforts to break certain patterns of behaviour with Leone’s disarming candor and the bell-like clarity of her voice. The track’s quietly insistent urging to move past impulses to close off from the world is brought to life in Savannah Setten’s startlingly surreal video, created with Anna on The Azores.

With the changeable weather systems of the Portuguese archipelago mirroring the tender, dream-like sequence, Anna notes; The narrative loop comes from the idea of being stuck in your ways, going through the same patterns, but then choosing to break out of that and do things differently. Towards the end I reconcile with the past, symbolised by the little girl. I choose to embrace what once was in order to move forward. It was incredible getting to shoot the video in that beautiful environment. The weather was really unpredictable - we went through almost all four seasons in one day.

Now 26 - still shy, but determined to connect, Anna grew up the quietest of five sisters in a suburb of Stockholm. An introverted video game and sci-fi obsessive, Anna fast developed her own rich inner life, absorbed in the storytelling DC and Marvel. It’s an escape she seeks comfort from now; I love losing myself in other universes, they give me a sense of belonging. Similarly, Leone bought a guitar with no other intention beyond privately perfecting treasured releases by the likes of Bon Iver, Lana Del Rey and Laura Marling.

Blue Water Highway - Sign Language.

Blue Water Highway shared their new single "Sign Language,” from their upcoming album Paper Airplanes, due March 12. The video is currently streaming via Sounds Like Nashville who writes, “the dreamy track feels like a mix of ’80s electro-pop and rootsy Americana, with synthesized keyboards and percussion joining an old-school male/female harmony.”

Singer and guitarist Zack Kibodeaux describes the themes behind “Sign Language,” writing “It’s about how two people can get into silly fights because they’re not seeing eye to eye, so they develop their own language to communicate. I think that’s an important message, how we can bond together when the world is falling apart.”

Paper Airplanes has received early acclaim from outlets such as American Songwriter, Parade, and American Blues Scene.

‘The sonic theme of the album was what we kept calling “building a space ship in a barn,” writes singer and guitarist Zack Kibodeaux. “It was essentially mixing organic sounds of the country with sounds of the urbanized, modern world. We achieved that with acoustic instruments and natural vocal harmonies, mixed with analog synthesizers and electric guitars. Lyrically, we were going for something similar, holding fast to elemental and timeless values of love and communication, while the world outside is rapidly changing and sometimes feeling more isolating and disconnected.’

Blue Water Highway was started by Zack Kibodeaux (lead vocals/guitar) and Greg Essington (vocals/guitar) who have been best friends since high school. Zack then turned to Catherine Clarke (vocals/keyboard), to complete the three-part harmonies that the band would soon be known for, and they were joined by Kyle Smith (bass). They take their name from the roadway that links their hometown of Lake Jackson, Texas to Galveston. They have released two full length studio albums to date in 2015’s Things We Carry and 2018’s Heartbreak City which includes their hit “Evangeline”.

Everything by Electricity - Violet Haze.

Everything by Electricity is a musical project led by Siberian-born songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Yulia Bizyukova. Yulia grew up in the unremarkable city of Barnaul located in the south of Western Siberia where it snows for a third of the year and freezing cold winters last for up to five months. She began making music at age 10, when she started learning guitar and almost immediately started writing songs and formed a school band. On moving to London, Yulia quietly crafted a collection of demo material in her bedroom studio and expanded the live line-up with the addition of James (bass guitar) and Manoela (drums). 

Everything by Electricity’s sound is littered with the strains of alienation and longing for escape one would expect from childhoods spent gazing across cold barren landscapes deep behind the iron curtain. The trio aptly derive their moniker from an extract of Jules Verne’s 2000 Leagues Under The Sea – “There is a powerful agent, obedient, rapid, easy, which conforms to every use, and reigns supreme on board my ship. Here’s what Yulia had to say about the track: “While this song is fairly upbeat and even uplifting, lyrically, it’s a melancholic anthem of letting go, shutting down the memories and moving on. I wrote this song a few years ago when I locked myself for a week in my room working on the first batch of EbE demos without getting much sleep, it was exciting yet absolutely exhausting too and one early morning when I’ve finished a couple of first tracks, I went to bed thinking that I’m finally getting out of my room as soon as I wake up and as I’ve been falling asleep, this whole new song just came into my head out of nowhere and started with the line: “hey, ride away into the wild, you colored my days with your smile” and so on, with the finished melody, guitar riffs, everything. So I got up, grabbed my guitar and recorded it in “voice memos” on my phone so I could remember it the next day, that’s how I wrote “Violet Haze”. Couldn’t get out of that room for another week sadly but demoed “Violet Haze” instead”

John Paul Keith - I Don't Wanna Know.

Memphis-based artist John Paul Keith will release his new record 'The Rhythm of the City' on February 19th via Wild Honey Records.

Following album opener 'How Can You Walk Away', he has now shared new single 'I Don't Wanna Know'. Of the new track, he says: "We had already recorded the ten songs I'd planned for the record, but there was one song I just wasn't happy with, so I decided to shelve it. That meant I needed one more song. I told the band to give me a couple of days and I went home and wrote "I Don't Wanna Know". I knew right away the album was going to be better for it. And I was happy the other song didn't work out, because I probably would never have written this one. We went back in and recorded it, and Tirienii and Tikyra Jackson wrote the perfect background vocal arrangement for it. It just all came together."

Keith’s fifth solo album – and his first self-produced effort – 'The Rhythm of the City' finds him expanding his approach on a horn-heavy 10-song collection that’s in thrall to the classic sounds of Bluff City soul and rock and roll.

“I was at my home in Memphis one evening and heard a car pass by blasting Al Green's ‘Love and Happiness,’ which was recorded just a couple miles away,” says singer-songwriter John Paul Keith. “I was struck by how Howard Grimes' drumming just seems to embody something about the feel and the pace of life for me here. I thought to myself, ‘Howard Grimes is the rhythm of the city.’ My next thought was, ‘That sounds like a title track.’”

Conjuring up his own unique musical mélange –a sweet spot where the sound of Sun blues, Stax soul, and Hi R&B all meet – it’s a record steeped in the geography and culture of Memphis, which Keith has called home for the last 15 years. “The vibe came about organically from playing Beale Street and Graceland and working with horn sections more frequently the last few years,” says Keith.

The Rhythm of the City was recorded to tape at Electraphonic Studios, and engineered by Keith’s frequent collaborator, Scott Bomar (bandleader of the Bo-Keys, Don Bryant producer, and film composer for Dolemite Is My Name).

Elise Davis - Yellow Bed.

Nashville-based singer/songwriter Elise Davis has announced her third studio album Anxious. Happy. Chill. will be released on April 16 via Tone Tree. Davis released “Yellow Bed,” following the release of three singles in 2020 (“Ladybug,” “The Grid,” and “Flame Color”) that will appear on the forthcoming album.

"I lived alone for a very long time. My bed was temporary for others and I very much liked having my own space. That was until I met my now-husband Jason,” explains Davis. “After we moved in together there were these moments of absolute bliss I would feel getting into our bed together at night, simply experiencing my bed also being someone else's bed. It is a place we meet and fall into our own little world every night. The great amount of joy that has given me was the inspiration for this song."

Anxious. Happy. Chill. was recorded just days after wrapping her honeymoon in Arizona, where she finished writing the album in the Sonoran Desert outside Tucson. Davis recorded the album with producer Teddy Morgan (Carl Broemel) at his studio in Nashville, TN. With the Covid-19 pandemic already in full swing, Davis and Morgan worked together for a month while maintaining their physical distance, communicating through the glass windows of the studio's isolation booths and playing the majority of the instruments themselves. Drummer Fred Eltringham (Sheryl Crow, The Wallflowers) joined them for a single day to lend the album its unique, percussive pulse.

The album was written during the rush of a new relationship and recorded weeks after Davis’ wedding. It's the happiest record she's ever made, stocked with 10 songs that serve as foils to the independent, no-boys-allowed anthems that filled her critically-acclaimed 2018 sophomore album, Cactus. Davis remains every bit as resilient and empowered as Cactus proved her to be, but she has also traded her old muses — heartache, sadness, and a lone-wolf mentality — for something bolder and brighter.
